Some advice for some newbies...

Hello out there-- I'm new to this list, working on Baltimore's first bike collective. We're woking towards our first year of active existence, and we have lot's of questions and could use any advice we can get. In paticular we are trying to figure out the best way to store bikes efficiently and inexpensively...Also we are working on starting up mechanics classes for kids and adults and would appreciate any advice, curricula, written materials, or funding sources anyone could shoot our way... I sent something out to all the bike collectives before, but I thought I'd try this list as well and see what came up.... thanks in advance-- i'm excited that this list exists! -beth of Velocipede Bike Project

When you do that people can just type in your organization's name and find you and all your contact info. we had a solvent tank for years, but no one felt very good about using it and so one day we got rid of it. no one misses that thing, and i swear the air quality in the back of the shop is better. rags, clean green or what have you, and a little elbow grease seems to do the trick. sidebar: i have a friend who throws his drive trains in the dishwasher at home once or twice a year. swears he always does a ghost load after the fact. omar ocb

Washing Parts

What does everyone else do to wash parts? We have a one 10 gallon parts washer full of industrial solvent and we go through Nitrile gloves like nobody else. It cleans great and fast, but that solvent smells, isn't good on the skin, and isn't fun to dispose of. We were thinking about getting an Aqueous Parts Washer, that heats up a Simple Green mixture. Dirty Shop Rags

This is a 'which is worse' question... Do you clean your dirty shop rags, or bring them to the local hazardous waste facility just like old paint, oil, gasoline, etc.,...? Our shop rags are actually cut up t-shirts that were extra from a cycling event over a decade ago -- so we have plenty and they cost us nothing. But once they are dirty, they not only produce a fire hazard but a cleaning / disposal issue. The chemicals required to effectively clean rags aren't good for the water supply / sewers -- since we all live down stream. At the same time throwing something away (even properly) after one use seems like a waste too.
