Start-up Shop Tool/supply Lists?

Hey all, Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul, MN has become a growing resource for supporting small start-up bike repair programs at schools, community centers, and now potentially the (basement of the) Science Museum of Minnesota! Does anybody have any lists of tools/supplies that provide solid starting direction for a new program? My vision is to have a list of recommended tools that a start-up space might purchase (using wholesale costs) for $1,000 and also a $3,000 or $5,000 level (including more benches, truing stands, etc). This would be very useful for small to medium grant applications without having to reinvent the wheel each time. If anyone has any resources they're generated, I'd welcome the opportunity to review and use it! Bikes Not Bombs Hiring Fieldworker Mechanic for Uganda

Seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker for new BNB Project in Uganda Bikes Not Bombs is partnering with St. Mary's Lacor Hospital to launch a new project in Amuru, Northern Uganda to provide bicycles to 300 village health workers. The goal is to improve the health workers' efficiency and productivity in providing health services to people in rural areas of Amuru, with the hope of positively impacting the overall health outcomes in Amuru. In order to do this we must establish the necessary bicycle repair infrastructure in Amuru, train the village health workers in bicycle mechanics, refurbish the bicycles, and prepare the Amuru Village Health Team to sustain the project long-term. Bikes Not Bombs is seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker to help implement this new project in Amuru for a period of 6-9 months starting in January 2012. Winter shut down?

The Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop in Lexington KY has been up and running solidly since last Nov. Our question is, how many shops shut down or tweak their hours during the cold weather months? We do not anticipate closing completely because our shop is used by so many, but we do need to get some rest for the volunteers and work on some education classes. Currently we are open Tuesday 8-11 pm Thursday 6-9 pm Sunday 1-5 pm Currently, thinking about staying open on Sundays during the winter but making Tuesday and education night and then closing on Thursday till spring when we can start to build up a lot of sale bikes. Examples of business plans?

Hi folks- I'm the communication coordinator for the Alliance for Biking & Walking, a coalition of more than 185 state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. The majority of our member organizations are of the standard advocacy model (bike safety classes, encouragement programs, state/local lobbying, policy work, etc) — but there's incredible interest in the energy, power and equity of community bike shops / earn-a-bike / recycle-a-bicycle programs. Several advocates have recently asked me if there are any examples of community bike shop "business plans" that might serve as inspiration or models for, say, a community bike shop in her area of Mississippi. Would anybody be willing to share or provide some feedback? Thanks in advance! Insurance

I am the president of _www.BikesForTykes.org_ (http://www.BikesForTykes.org) a children's program that refurbishes old bikes into near new condition and then gives them to the underprivileged kids in our area. Even though we are the oldest continuous bike program in the US, we still encounter problems. My question is how most of you handle shop liability and event liability? I see a lot of posting about having kids work on their bikes, however the 'hold not responsible' forms you have people sign just will not do it in a court of law. The only close to 'protected' way is to have shop and event liability through an insurance company and get your 'not hold responsible' forms signed. Even then it is not a 'sure thing'. It all depends on the judge. Has anyone run this by an attorney? What did he/she have to say and where do you get the insurance from? One injury to a child and a parent out to make an example out of any of us and your program is toast!!! I have not got the best answer so I am asking all of you what you have done.
