Hi All, Like Dr Cranky's we are the state of Victoria Australia which unlike other states has undergone the longest lockdown anywhere in the world. Measures have included a limit of 5km movement except for going to work in the few areas that are operational. It's now been relaxed to 25km. Fortunately bike shops could undertake urgent repairs and now we are finally allowed to refurbish bikes for sale and donation but under strict conditions. Some of the effects have been extra stress on our shop managers who spend at least an hour a day cleaning. There is also a Covid protocol with checklists to be completed. Our volunteers have been limited to 4 per day and even with many volunteers self excluding we have to run a roster to limit volunteers. This contradicts our previous policy of allowing anyone to volunteer any day. Everyone must wear masks and disposable work gloves which can be difficult and the enforcement is another stress for the managers. For cleanliness reasons our kitchen is closed so we now get in takeaway for volunteers everyday. Any sales and servicing is click and collect with no interaction with the public. Fortunately we have been the beneficiaries of some government largesse which has to some extent allowed us to continue with our work. One of the unfortunate side effects has been a dip in the diversity of volunteers. At our next online meeting rebuilding diversity, especially women will be on the agenda. The flip side of the lockdown is that the state is finally getting under 5 new infections a day and the restrictions are gradually being relaxed. TLDR; We are open in a *very* limited capacity and can expand our programs and services when A) Arizona isn't no longer a COVID-19 hot spot and B) we have enough volunteers return to man the shop. Our pandemic journey at Bike Saviours has been that of trial and error. After a soft reopening with curbside repair and parts shopping, I tested positive for COVID-19. We closed the shop completely to quarantine and evaluate next steps. Once everyone tested negative, we decided to keep the shop closed to the public and sell bigger ticket items to keep the lights on. So our two paid staff and a handful of volunteers are inside the building 5 days a week building bikes that we sell by appointment using Calendly. One of those days is reserved for just building bikes and no appointments. For our current use, Calendly has worked great and nonprofits get a 20% discount off a yearly subscription. We also have some fancy/rare items for sale on eBay. Volunteers sign up for a shift using VolunteerSignUp and there are only 5 slots available per shift to avoid overcrowding. Lofty, though, as we usually have 1 or 2 a day. DIY bike repair and instruction and parts shopping are central to our mission, so just fixing up and selling bikes feels weird. We field several emails, calls, and walk-ups each week and it's painful to say "sorry, we hate these circumstances, too" over and over. There are daily discussions about our capacity to bring back DIY repair and parts shopping and it's looking like we'll use Calendly to handle appointments for donation drop-offs, parts shopping, and bike repair at least until it's deemed safe to gather here in Arizona. Shop rules are that everyone wears a face covering, mechanics use every other repair stand to maintain distance, and disinfect their tools when finished using them. All the bikes for sale are disinfected between appointments. There is hand sanitizer throughout the shop and reminders posted to wash hands frequently. We use a combination of fans and open doors to provide positive air flow in the rooms where appointments are held in an area separate from the workshop. We haven't run out yet, but tube and tire supplies are running dangerously thin with little inventory to be found. Thank you for sharing your updates and smart ways of handling this crappy situation! We use Calendly and send the data to Airtable using Zapier so we can have records of everything. That setup may be a bit more complicated than what you need though. Two questions for y'all along the insurance thread: How did you determine that your insurance *does* indeed cover DIY repairs? Seems like a lot of legalese in our General Liability Insurance that is pretty incomprehensible. Also, for those with a Board, do you have Directors & Officers Insurance? When our shop suspended DIY repair to patrons as a result of the lockdowns, I checked to see that our insurance covered not only DIY repairs but also staff-made repairs and it does. Our liability has never been challenged, though I wouldn't mind paring down our waiver, too. I've attached ours and am interested in seeing others. So you could be opening your staff, board, or volunteers to liability. We'd also like to think that our friends and guests aren't the suing types. But people don't sue because they're jerks (okay, some do), but because they're desperate. They sue because our health care system sucks, and they'll be bankrupted by bills, And it's not hard to demonstrate in court that we are trusted resources who should know better than allow someone to install their own front wheel without making sure they understand how to use that quick release, the part responsible for more lawsuits than any other component. Hi Aaron, not sure what it's like Stateside, but in the UK, I'm pretty sure insurance is essential even if just recommending repairs and alterations to people working on their own bikes, not just providing these yourselves. There are ways to get around insurance but it's usually frowned upon from what I gather. Whilst many insurers here can offer coverage, a few (such as Butterworth Spengler) specialise in cycling and can thus provide comprehensive quotes, are familiar with risks and if anything does go wrong, they're probably better placed to support. We offer popup-servicing to local corporate clients as well as training and servicing in our workshop within a gift economy (essentially on a 'pay what you can' basis) and we need a minimum of £5Million Public Liability and Products insurance for this. I hand built our premises, turning a shipping container into a solar powered, insulated timber framed workshop and due to this, I think we pay a bit more (it's pretty odd and anything odd = uncertainty = risk = ££ / $$ it seems). Also, because it's in a high risk area. We have very comprehensive Risk Assessments, Method Statements and loads of policies - but this doesn't seem to have dropped out insurance premium...useful though ;) Not sure whether this info is helpful but do message me if I can be of assistance. Insurance for Collectives Offering Repair Services

Hey Bike-tankers, Many collectives seem to be offering repair services during Covid-times to help keep the lights on. Some non-profit shops have been offering repair services <https://freewheelbikes.org/service-and-repair/> for a while. There has been some mention of repair liability insurance and I would like to know more. Our shop is considering offering repair services, and I am wondering...Is it a good idea? Do we need insurance? Where can we find insurance? How much does it cost? Those types of things... Thanks in advance! Aaron

Hi Dennis, We run an Earn-a-Bike programme at the Bristol Bike Project so I might be able to help out. What exactly do you need and what is it for? Are you looking to set one up? I could forward our annual impact report if it's helpful. We manage to run our programme without funding because we use donated bikes and secondhand parts, volunteer time, and charge £20 at the end for a lock and lights, which covers our costs. Of course if you wanted to do the whole thing for free then you would need some funding but we don't have any funding docs that would be useful. Let me know if you'd like to discuss more. Hi. I run an in school Earn-A-Bike and open workshop program in Lowell, Massachusetts. All schools in Massachusetts, including the Lowell Public Schools, are closed for the remainder of the school year. Schools are moving to remote learning plans. How to adapt? What are your suggestions on creating remote learning programs and activities that engage students in cycling during the summer months (and possibly during the next school year)? Some students have access to bikes. Some do not. For students that do have bikes, many of their bikes are in disrepair. I'm sitting on a sizable inventory of donated bicycles that need refurbishment. Most students have access to a SmartPhone and/or other digital device (laptop, Chromebook, tablet). Many thanks for your input. Wade The Bike Connector Lowell, Massachusetts

Hey bike folks, I'm working adapting our bike ed course to a remote learning format, and want to tap into the thinktank hive-mind. Does anyone have a link to a good video of someone crashing via and 'endo'? Ideally it would be shot from the side, have clear footage, and not to gruesome (though I can edit knarly bits out). I'm looking for something to accompany an explanation of inertia, and act as an intro to an emergency braking lesson. Hi Nicole! Our shop manager is also a welder and made the one seen in the attached photos. The wheels rotate for optimal browsing. If you have a welder handy we highly recommend it!
