Collectives, Community Cycles in Boulder has a wheel problem, I'm guessing your bike collective does too. Do you have too many wheels? How do you manage them? We're about to recycle a bunch of good wheels that we don't have room for. How can we put them to use? no pics yet, but i'll describe: we hold wheels 3 ways: 1- a trapezoid made of 2x4's, that has a hundred or so brake arms nailed to it, that holds wheels nicely; 2- drop handle bars inserted into a chain link fence that holds 2 wheels to the bar (no fasteners needed!); 3- brake arms (the long arms only) holding wheels from the ceiling (i'd like to move away from #3 because of murphy's law and an eventual wheel coming down on someone). > Boulder has a wheel problem, I'm guessing your bike> collective does too. > Do you have too many wheels? Hi all, Last year's bikebike site had a handy listing of bike co-ops around the country that had attended the conference, and if they had a website, the listing was an active link. Is there such a directory this year? At the bicycle collective network site, it seems not all the co-ops are represented, not even close. Can bikebike make another such directory of websites and co-ops. San Francisco

I need to fly to San Francisco in the next week weeks (hoping for next week, maybe the week after; wed to friday) to apply for a vis with the Italian consulate of San Francisco (I am moving there in January). Wow, Thank you for all the replies. I had no idea there were so many nerds (myself included, I work public library IT) involved in the bike collective scene. I think that as much as I would love drupal I think it might be a little too inclusive for some of the folks that are involved. There are four of us that are now testing the waters with "crabgrass" from the riseup group, (we already have the shop email set up there) and so far I've been pretty impressed. It isn't quite as flexible as some of the other CMS but for organizing it seems very streamlined. I think it will be pretty easy to use for the non-nerds amongst us. I will update how it's going after I introduce it to the group. Thanks, Andrew

Content Management Systems

We have been using pbwiki.com (a free wiki, one login) for our organizing but are starting to feel the need for a tiered access control as well as for an actual website to send the public to. We have been contemplating getting a content management system such as "drupal" to serve both functions. I think the SLBC uses a similar CMS for their website and maybe others do to. How well does it work? Do regular folks have a difficult time using it? our ideal: public web page w/ donation links, a login page with a volunteer only section, then a section for core members only where we would keep fundraising info. Would like it to be easy to edit, with a wiki-like interface, preferably wysiwyg editors. Thanks, Andrew

heya we switched to a drupal website last year for similar reasons. i loved the idea of using a wysiwyg interface because the point was to make the website a useful tool for staff, but we've found them pretty buggy. but even without, the website has worked well, easy to update, staff can get in there and mess around comfortably. not many of them do, but you can only lead a horse to water. . . we also back up our files on the website, use it to store and transfer stuff, for communication, etc. a work in progress but from our experience so far i'd recommend it. -- omar bhimji project manager pedal bike depot p. 604.708.4992

Hey there, Ariel from portland Bike Farm Inc. We met with our lawyer to file the 1023 forms, and there were a couple things we forgot to ask him. there's a section that says, if you'll be making over $10,000 in Revenue in a year, the fee to file te forms to the IRS is $750, but if you'll be making less, then its only $300. If our organization hasn't projected to be making more than $10,000 the first and second year, but possibly the 3rd, should we be paying the $750 or $300? let us know... as we're in the process of doing it all, and may need to get money quick. thanks, Ariel

selling bikes, making bikes for yourself?

Hi all, At the Mount Rainier Bike Coop in Mount Rainier, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC, we are working how to sell our bikes that we refurbish. We really don't have any fixed or regular costs; the city gives us the space (a garage), so we just use our money on spare parts and tools. We have an earn-a-bike program so youth can build up bikes for us, learning mechanic skills, and then after fifteen hours of voluteering, the youths can build a bike for themselves. Volunteers who have already put in 15 hours of work can basically just keep refurbishing bikes. No one gets paid anything at this point. Generally, at this point, we just sell our refurbished bikes in one way or another. Do other shops do this? Also, presumably, volunteers could, after working fifteen hours, refurbish bikes for themselves, and then sell them on craigslist or something. Do other coops have a policy with regards to refurbishing bikes for yourself, one after the other, and then selling them for your own profit? we have minors at all of our projects. usually there's no special consideration, but for formal programs (earn a bike, after school, etc.) we get them and the 'rents to fill out a medical info/consent/waiver thing. never had to use one, but the lawyer in me and the bod feels better if we cover our butts the way everyone else does, our insurance guy appreciates it and a couple of funders have asked about it. i could post a copy of what we use to the wiki but its pretty standard fair. as to your second point, there's a list of "10 commandments" at the shop that can be pointed to with an "oy!" when a custy gets out of line (again, standard stuff like "let us know beforehand if you're broke", "respect the staff, other customers and tools", and "if you have a question about how we work, ask us"). at the workshop where i work, we get participants to come up with a list of rules and guidelines at the begining of each earn a bike class that they all agree to abide by, and stick it up on the wall for the duration of the class. they rarely miss anything important, and if someone gets rowdy it seems less authoritative when you can remind them that they agreed to the rule they're breaking. -- omar bhimji project manager pedal bike depot p. 604.708.4992

Minors in the shop and general shop rules

Hey from Delaware! Just a couple questions for those with established shops....we will soon be moving out of my living room and are trying to learn from all your hard earned experience (the wiki has been great too). 1. How do you deal with minors in the shop? Do you have permission slips they need to get signed or require a parent/guardian to come with them before a bike can be worked on? These are currently our main "customers" and there is no way i'd turn away a kid with broken brakes because he didn't have a slip signed. I just want to make sure we keep everything kosher here. 2. Could you share your general shop rules so we have a starting point? Stuff like no profane language, be respectful, no tools outside....that sort of thing. Thanks err'body! how do you track shop activity?

Hello, friends. We've created a shop sign in sheet, which is great for capturing some numbers, like how many people come through the shop during a particular session, how many were volunteers, how many were kids, etc. What I'm having trouble tracking is the number of unique people accessing the shop over a period of time. In other words, I don't know how to factor out repeat participants when I start adding up numbers from session to session. Has anyone developed a good system for tracking shop activity? What kind of information do you ask for on your sign in sheet? Do you have another system, like tagging the bikes and having tags collected when people complete their projects? Thanks! rachael

We are hosting a fundraising/"friend"raising event as a way to connect to more of the bike community and to thank those who have already supported us. We plan to have some food and auction or raffle, but need something interesting to get people there! Would love to do a bike art show, but no time. Was wondering if anyone had other entertainment ideas? Any especially attractive interactive workshop ideas or demonstrations? Any bike-related short films that would of interest to a multi-generational, urban & suburban audience?
