Hello everyone, I work for Kickstand in Vancouver, BC. We are reorganizing the shop to create an environment that allows volunteers to be very self-directed and self-sufficient while volunteering. One of the the solutions I'm working on is creating a How-To guide for sorting EVERY used part, so that brand-new mechanics can get working parts into the appropriate bins, or strip them for small parts (even if they don't really know what all the parts do. Think, flow charts and well-labeled diagrams). I know that there are other shops out there who have already made these resources, so that I don't have to rebuild a wheel unnecessarily. Does anyone work/volunteer for a shop that has these resources? Please share! Or do you know of a shop that does this? I'm happy to contact them! Thanks for your collective brain power! -stasia

Bulk Used Parts

Would anybody out there be interested in receiving bulk shipments of used bike parts? Back Alley Bikes collects parts from hundreds of bikes every year and many of them are used at a much slower rate than they arrive. We are exploring the idea of running a Community Shared Bike Parts program (after the model of CSAs in communities with access to local agriculture) or simply packaging parts in bulk and shipping them to fellow bike collectives upon request. Please respond with your thoughts. Would you be interested in receiving parts for a fee to cover our costs? Please take a look and share far and wide! * Director of Youth Programs – Neighborhood Bike Works* *Position Summary:* Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) is seeking a full-time Director of Youth Programs to lead our organization’s youth bike-education programming. This position assumes primary responsibility for directing and developing all youth programs, and supervising and supporting the professional development of all youth program staff. Additionally, the Director of Youth Programs works with the Executive Director and other department managers as part of NBW’s leadership team, represents NBW and its programming to funders, community partners, youth, and families; and partners with Board, other staff, and volunteers to develop the organizational resources of NBW. *About Neighborhood Bike Works:* In 2017, NBW will build on its recent growth and reloication to a new community shop and bike education hub. bike maintenance training for a local Boys and Girls club

My community does not have a bike coop. I repair donated bikes and give them away through local charities and offer free bike clinics around town (library, churches, etc). I have been donating bikes to the local Boys and Girls club and now have been asked to give bike maintenance training to some of the kids. The kids are middle schoolers, we have no dedicated space, there are no tools except what I can provide, I get about an hour a week, and I am enjoying every minute of it. I started out going over how to do a pre-ride safety check, changing tires and tubes, and things like that. It quickly be came a problems course - a bike would show up and we diagnose what needs to be done to get the bike safely back on the road, I supervise the kids when they fix it, and the bike immediately finds a new happy owner. Basket cases go to my shop and I make them work. I am looking for pointers to any kind of similar programs to see what they cover and get any advise that might be available. Y'all! Bike! Bike! has come and gone. PLEASE O PLEASE post workshop notes and thoughts on how it went and what you remember of major points of discussion I will still mail one chocolate bar and/or thank you card to each person who takes detailed notes and posts or emails them. On a related note, presumably most of your community bike shops take notes at meetings, it helps keep everyone who can't attend on the same page. I mean, having never attended (ideological transportation preferences + cost to travel). I say this with so much love for the people of bike!bike! and thinktank: with notes in past years either absent or mostly-absent, it sort of feels like y'all have unintentionally developed something of a secret cabal. How did it go!? And if there aren't notes from this year, is there any way to at least get some sort of consensus on their accessibility value? We are wrapping up a busy summer and transitioning into an exciting Fall. We are so grateful for the immense support we received for the campaign to purchase the property at 732 S. 1st St. W. We had a wild turn near the end of the capital campaign, and still have some work ahead of us to become the new owner. Please read the following news article about the state of our efforts to purchase our home. To view pictures and a summary of the entire Cycles of Change campaign timeline click here. As a piece to finish off the financing of the property, we are extremely close to offering promissory notes to the community. These are essentially loans that will be paid back by Free Cycles over time through a combination of tenant rental income, continued fundraising, and growth in program revenue. The future is bright! Please be patient as we work through finalizing the specific details of these notes. Although our final stage of our campaign is not actively canvassing, phone-banking, or asking for donations, we sure welcome and appreciate them. Capital Campaign and Re-fitting our space: Suggestions?

Urban Bike Project of Wilmington Delaware will soon be embarking on a Capital Campaign to structurally stabilize and re-fit our current location which is an 100+ year old city-owned former police carriage barn. We are a non-profit community bike shop located in a low income inner city area. We have an architect engaged to help with some preliminary plans and drawings, and we've met with a number of our key volunteers to discuss how we can change our current space to maximize efficiency. This is a rather broad question, but I'm wondering if anyone has any practical experience on do's and don't's for such an undertaking or any other useful advice? We're trying to co-locate as best as possible our tools and work-stands and locate our used parts closer as well. This will limit the movement required with our current design and allow us to keep a closer watch on things to limit theft as best we can. Also trying to formalize a waiting area to help prevent customers wandering which is a particular problem during Youth Open Shop night,but also with adults. As I said, a rather broad topic but maybe someone on this list has real experience that they want to share. Deb PROGRAM COORDINATOR Full-Time Organizational Overview: Bike Works, based in Seattle, builds sustainable communities by educating youth and promoting bicycling. Bike Works has been working for people, biking, and community in Seattle since 1996. Our programs and services invest in people and encourage bicycling as a clean and healthy transportation alternative. Last year over 2,000 youth and adults participated in our programs and gained the skills and resources they need to translate lessons about cycling into their own lives, helping them to make healthier decisions about their futures. We also redistribute over 6,000 used bicycles annually to youth and adults in Seattle through our programs, internationally through our partners and through our community bike shop. Role Overview: The Bike Works Program Coordinator works with the Program Department to deliver various operations of youth and adult programs and works closely with the program staff in teaching bike repair classes and performing all needed mechanic work associated with these classes. This is an excellent opportunity for a bike mechanic with youth and adult mentoring/teaching and development experience and enthusiasm for working as part of a team. This position is a full-time position that requires evening and weekend work. Essential Job Functions: . Works alone, or in tandem with other program staff, to run community programs; including bike repair classes, bike riding clubs, bike giveaways, bike summer camps, BikeMobile services, and partnerships. . Coordinates bike mechanic work related to all programs; fixes and safety checks bikes for programming. . Maintains all classroom environments; cleans all spaces weekly. . Coordinates bike storage and bike needs for various parts of the organization. . Participates in agency-wide planning and staff development processes. Qualifications & Experience: - Excellent bike mechanic skills; prior experience as a bicycle mechanic in a shop setting is required for this position. - Ability to teach in an engaging and yet, challenging manner; prior experience teaching is preferred. - Commitment to leadership, sustainable communities and using bicycles as a form of transportation. - Willingness and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, gender orientations and political beliefs, and people of all ages. - Daily bike rider; experienced bike tourer preferred. - Commitment to social justice and awareness of privilege. - Ability to work as part of a team. - Desire to serve hands-on and in a classroom, bike warehouse, and office. - Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks. - Self-starter/strong self-initiative; able to lead projects independently. - Growth mindset for others and for oneself. - Energetic, flexible, personable, and a sense of humor. - Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner. - Capacity to work on a computer and complete paperwork and database work as needed. - Ability to manage time effectively. - Dedicated/hard worker. - Driver's license and ability to pass a driving record check and drive large vehicles. - Ability to work evenings and weekends is required for this position. - Good risk management skills - current CPR and/or Wilderness First Aid certification recommended - ability to become certified required.
