You know how over at old spokes home community bike shop they're doing the free pickle with every purchase? http://www.oldspokeshome.com/entry/free-pickle I was thinking, what if ALL the bike collectives celebrated FREE PICKLE Day? Or FREE PICKLE WEEK, even. It could be a pickle with every purchase, ending in a big ole' pickle potluck/feast like with sauerkraut and kimchee and pickle bucket panniers (I recommend pickled ginger) works. I mean, seriously. You could even sanitize some spokes and serve pickles on spokes. it could be maybe even used as a fundraiser or volunteer lure event if you're due for one of those. Any interest?

NY Mechanical Gardens FIRST WORKSHOP!

Hello from Brooklyn! It's been a busy season trying to get our coop off the ground, including some setbacks over the recent months, but last night marked a real milestone for us: *We had our first real workshop, in a space that might become our regular home!* The backstory is that a local women's cycling group let me know they were prepping for a big upcoming ride that was going to be a real challenge for them. We pitched staging an event so that their people could have access to a well-staffed open workshop where we could help them head off problems and feel more empowered about their bikes. AND we pitched it to a church space that looks like they're going to invite us to move in and treat it as our home. AND, it was a smashing success. We publicized through a few channels, mostly women's cycling groups, and got a really great turnout from minute 1 right through to the end. People had a ball. Mechanical Gardens volunteers did great with putting the tools in the riders' hands. Lots of bikes got fixed. Great diversity in the crowd. Watermelon got eaten. It was pretty much just perfect. It was also the first real moment of life for New York City's first-ever bike coop. And it was the first moment that this dream I've had of starting a coop here -- a dream you all made me feel was possible -- has actually seemed like it might really be coming true. Last night was a definitive milestone for us, and I'm dedicating it to you all. Hi, all! We are Community Bike Works, a youth development program in Allentown, PA. We plan to serve about 500 youth in our Earn a Bike and Junior Earn a Bike programs this year. Often our students will report that their bikes have been lost or stolen within several months of their earning them. Has anyone implemented any shop procedures that work well to track the bikes that leave their shop, or otherwise to prevent/deter thefts, especially for young people? B!KE offers a combo lock with each earned bicycle and in our last Earn-A-Bike session we specifically teach how to lock a bike. Many youth do still trade, or sometimes sell, their bicycles. Our official policy is that you can't earn another bike for one year. Hi All! Interbike's way, way around the corner, September 14th-18th with the Outdoor Demo the two days before. As you probably know, the industry's dog-and-pony show is a great environment for Collectives to meet retailers and shop owners and let them know about all the great ways to get involved with what we do on a local and national level. Last year we didn't get a ticket confirmation until the LAST MINUTE, which was annoying, so I wanted to reach out to the network early this year with two things. 1. Would you like to go and get a (free) ticket through us? 2. What resources should we bring to bear and share with the cycling industry? If you'd like to go, sign up on this sheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ryv4e0wSR21-9LXoMRrLxjHbG6eafAzTmg4…> and fill out the relevant tabs. Going to Interbike with us comes with responsibility: Firstly, everyone attending has to sign up for two shifts at the Bicycle Collective Network booth (third tab below), where we'll be representing the Bicycle Collective and the Alliance for Walking and Biking. Secondly, we will not tolerate conduct that doesn't represent us favorably to the rest of the bicycling industry. Being inconsiderate of an exhibitor's time, heckling for swag or deals from people you haven't developed a relationship with or who haven't clearly offered that sort of thing, or generally behaving like a child will earn you a boot from the show. Youth Leadership Expectations

Hello all! You have all been so helpful in the past regarding our questions about rebuilding our youth programs, and now I ask to lean on your collective experience yet again. Our current questions are: 1. How do you determine the expectations, benefits, boundaries, & consequences of disrespecting those boundaries for youth in your space? For example, in a classroom we might involve all participants in creating a contract together, but in a fluctuating space, where people come and go daily, what is an effective way to have common guidelines that does not disempower youth? 2. Does your organization have a Youth Leadership Program? If so... - How does a young person become involved in leadership? - Has your program changed/grown as it has become more established? What has that journey been like? - Does your program have additional expectations for youth designated as leaders? (i.e. Do they have extra privileges and responsibilities? What kinds of behaviors might put their leadership status in jeopardy?) And last but certainly not least... - *Do standards for their behavior extend beyond the walls of your building? (i.e. Must they be enrolled in school? What if they are seen fighting, bullying, or riding dangerously out in the community? etc.)* Thank you in advance for any/all wisdom you can offer. I'm thinking about including a page that gives tips and maybe an outline for attendees writing workshop proposals for this year's Bike!Bike!. Does anyone feel that this might be a particularly bad idea? Otherwise, a discussion here on good and bad practices, examples of well written workshop descriptions, or examples of things you have found confusing about the process would be super useful but it would be great if I could also find a volunteer to help write the doc.
