No specific answer here, only a reflection that this is a place where process becomes really important: when there's no structure in place to even begin looking at bad behavior (or sub-optimal behavior) then it falls to individuals to intervene, which makes conflict hard to avoid. Even having guidelines on paper and a rotation for who enforces them or brings up grievances can be helpful. In Search of a Speaker

Hello all, Locally, we have a think tank / forum that focuses on community progress and they have asked us for a recommendation on someone who can give a presentation / lecture on active transportation. Of course, we have no shortage of topics in mind. So we'd like your help - who have you heard and think is great or would like to hear speak about what biking and/or walking can do and is doing to help improve quality of life? Or, maybe you're the person we're looking for - if so, let us know! To dig into this a little more, there are a ton of areas we'd love to focus on; however, improving support for and accessibility to biking and walking for people in undeserved and low-income communities is definitely high on our list. Whether it's one particular topic such as community building, bike cooperatives, youth programs, bike clubs, or otherwise, or a combination of many topics, we'd like to find a great speaker who can discuss the importance of biking and/or walking and share what they've done and accomplished in their city. Also, I think we've all heard our fair share of "experts" who, while brilliant and passionate, they just aren't good presenters for whatever reason. We don't need a Winston Churchill or MLK, Jr., but we need someone who can offer great insight and isn't dull. Also, the closer the person is to Erie the better, and we're looking to schedule someone for spring. For some background, Erie is a city of 100,000 and has no bike shop or bike cooperative within city limits. We have fewer than two miles of bike lanes (though a really nice 10 mile multiuse path), we don't have a bike/ped coordinator or bike/ped plan, but we are set up in a wicked awesome grid system and have wide roads with not much congestion. About us - we're a new organization (circa 2012) and there has never been a bike advocacy organization like us. In other words, we all have a long ways to go and providing education opportunities like this to help spark further action, involvement and investment is very important. We recently had an issue like this at Mechanical Tempest. At a fortnightly meeting, it came up that one of our volunteers was behaving in a way that was dismissive to people trying to learn, and generally acting like a know-it-all man (very common problem). We decided that the best way to approach this was 1 - amend our safe space policy so we had something to point to if it happens again in the future, and 2 - reach out to the volunteer and tell him the issue that others were having with his behavior. The mechanic that runs a shift with him put their hand up for this conversation. He took the feedback well. That's a pretty lightweight response in a high-trust group. If he did not take the feedback on, or did not amend his behavior, it would be nice to have a conflict resolution scheme already in place, but we haven't gotten there yet. But at least having an agreed upon policy to point to if the situation escalates is a good start. Momoko, I just wanted to say that your questions and comments here resonate for us at Troy Bike Rescue - also a long-time all-volunteer shop. We recently went through a pretty trying situation in which a long-time member was finally held accountable by fellow members after months of nothing being said and other collective members feeling disrespected or ceasing to participate as a result (or things were only being said in smaller/private groups). We do have a conflict resolution clause to our bylaws, and we did have professional mediation on deck in the case that it would be necessary or useful - but either of those only work with full cooperation from all parties.... and before that if grievances are actually voiced and then actually *heard* by the offending party. In the end the member was asked to leave the collective and was banned from the space until they agreed to participate in mediation. We are re-grouping, getting shit done, and hopeful for a fresh re-start as springtime rolls around. What you bring up is a really tough and important area of discussion, but I dont think we have the answer. We dont feel like our dealing with it was in any way exemplary, though our core group feels like a lot was learned, and we will certainly be on guard for red flags in the future..... but could things have been less painful and less drawn-out had something been different on an organizational level? probably? Quaker third party mediations. Following up with conflict res training for all key volunteers. It didnt work for my case but respect in the process needs to be fundemental in order for respect to be gained in the volunteer space. Its also important to do things fast. Taking a year or more to settle a conflict leaves details out and makes all parties in conflict in the lurch adding to tensions in the overall community. Hey friends! Sara writing you from chilly, lovely, and friendly Fargo, North Dakota, currently sitting right at 1 degree Fahrenheit! I'm a past member of the Fargo Moorhead Community Bicycle Workshop, most recently was working in the public library as the storytime superhero, and now back in the saddle with a bike-centered non-profit called Great Rides Fargo, which is dedicated to creating healthy individuals and communities with the almighty bike. Great Rides Fargo has been rolling on a small scale for 3 years, doing outreach with bike rodeos, youth programming, and a toting around a trailer of bikes. A number of projects have come together leading to it's growth and to my luck getting the position as the Director of Operations. Things we have going on: we will be launching a *bike share program* (using b-cycles) this spring with 11 stations and 101 bikes, we will be acquiring 2 *pedicabs, *and additionally taking over a roll of helping carry on *open streets community event* (3 to 5 mile loop open to only human powered traffic) . It's a lot of awesome and at the same time I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities and it has been a number of years since I have been in touch with friends in the cycling community! The last Bike! Bike! my partner Joe and I were able to attend was in beautiful Vancouver. Leasehold tax exemption with retail space?

We are operating on city property for free in exchange for the programs and outreach we do to get more individuals on bicycles. As a part of our work, we operate a retail space. The state has decided that we are not exempt from leasehold tax because we operate a retail space and they want to charge us 13% of the leased property's value per year. Let's just say, it's a lot of money in taxes if you consider the "potential" value of the space. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this issue and whether or not you were able to come to a favorable decision that was reasonable for your organization's budget. What we do with 1500 kids bikes each year

In short, we do this; https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0HJNUHA3wmIMnFLRjVWVk9hUFk/view So here in Winnipeg the community bike shops have had an agreement with the city landfill for the past 7 years where they put aside all the bicycles in the scrap metal area and we go out there once a month to sort/strip and harvest them. For 3 years we mostly scrapped the 1000s of 20" and under kids bikes that we didn't have the capacity to repair or store. Four years ago we came up with the idea for Cycle of Giving, a 24 hour kids bike building marathon. We invite volunteer mechanics from the city's 7 community bike shops, the for-profit shops, and anyone else who wants to come out to do a shift to spend between 6-24 hours building as many kids bikes (20" wheels or less) as they can. Last year we built 315 bikes in 24 hours and distributed them, free of charge, along with helmets and hand-made cards, to 14 different inner city youth service agencies. It's a fundraiser too, although we never seem to make much money (this year we got sponsors to make ends meet). But it's a damned good time with great bands (this year via the pedal powered sound system), amazing food, lots of glitter and eggnog and a whack of rad folks drinking too much coffee and slinging wrenches all night long. We always get great media too. The remaining kids bikes go to the bike repair vocational program for folks recovering from addictions in the local correctional facility. More details on that in some other email. Point is, annually we manage to turn those 1500 kids bikes in the landfill into 1000 working bikes for youth under 10 years of age. We have considered a paid staffer to be an eventuality for some time now and with our funding hurdle less of an issue and volunteer coordination/open-hours more of an issue this is our next priority. A paid position, if done well, is one way to alleviate this. Bullet points from all responses (on and off list): - Clear and reasonable job description - Quantifiable goals - Keeping in mind this is not an end-all-be-all solution - Outline the first employee and consider the evolution to next, and next employee to follow - A "benevolent dictator" would be well-suited - Entrepreneurial and self-supporting - Bike knowledge is less important than people and networking knowledge Our board's past discussions have bounced back and forth between defining the role as "shop manager" or "executive director". Finding someone who is good at either would more than likely suit us well but finding someone who is good at both would probably mean they're not performing 100% at either defined job. I have collated all your responses along with others received off-list am taking this for discussion at our board meeting next week. Paid Staff - Where to Begin

I am soliciting the advice of fellow cooperatives who currently employ paid staffers. Our organization has grown enough in it's 10 year history that we are prepared to bring on a part time paid staffer for the summer and fall months of next year. If there is anyone who would feel comfortable chatting with me either via a series of emailed questions or over the phone I would greatly appreciate it. Our goals with a paid staffer are primarily to alleviate the task of some of the less enticing jobs from our volunteers, to set the stage for being open more hours, and to dedicate a resource to further develop fund-generating streams like eBay and Craigslist. Together with the AMS Bike Coop, our mission is to support and expand the cycling mode share in the UBC area. We fill many different roles in the campus community and act as the hub of cycling activity in the area. During the day we offer repair services as well as repair instruction, and in the evenings we offer a range of educational programming on mechanics and riding skills. We specialize in refurbishing and selling used bicycles, and offer new and used parts/accessories for sale. The role of the Bike Kitchen Manager is an all-encompassing position and is the most senior role in the shop. The Manager is in charge of managing daily operations, as well as providing business direction. The Manager is also expected to be a proficient mechanic and repair bikes daily. The Manager reports to the Bike Co-op Board of Directors, who provide only broad direction. The Manager must keep the organization's mission in mind and oversee that the Bike Kitchen continues to act as an inclusive, positive space. The Manager must act as mechanic, staff manager, and business director. Duties and Responsibilities - Manage daily shop operations including sales and mechanics - Manage staff including hiring, training, scheduling, etc - Implement and expand on the business plan - Manage finances including cashout, weekly deposits, and payroll - Repair bikes for customers and do service writing - Act as primary contact for shop communications Qualifications - Must have experience or training in business management - 3+ years experience in the bike industry - Must have proficient bike mechanic skills - Must have experience managing staff - Must have an understanding of anti-oppressive values - Excellent organizational skills - Strong, professional communication and interpersonal skills Assets - Teaching experience - Knowledge of community bike shops - Knowledge of inventory and ordering - Knowledge of UBC departments and campus Salary: $38,000 - $42,000, plus benefits, commensurate on experience. We tried to strike a balance between the things one should invest in to stay comfortable and safe on a bike in winter, and the things that one could make or re-purpose.
