Earn-a-Bike documentation and reporting?

Hey Folks! When not immersed in planning an Ohio-themed Bike! Bike! fundraiser dance party (!!!), I'm actually doing other for real work. Including the exploration of formats, documentation, and reporting for our youth volunteering and Earn-a-Bike programs. Here in British Columbia, high school students are required to complete something like 30 hours of work experience (ie free labour) to graduate, and we get a lot of youth completing this requirement at our shops. We also run pretty informal Earn-a-Bike programs for youth who are in unconventional education settings, accessing social services, in alternative programs, or can't access our in-school programming for any variety of reasons. Lots of these kids are really focused on getting a job, but we can rarely accommodate that. I'm in the process of creating a checklist/worksheet of mechanical and interpersonal skills acquired by youth as they volunteer in our spaces. The idea is that it would include gradients of skill, becoming increasingly more complex as time goes on. It would be used to guide their time in the shop, and also document what they've learned. It would be the youth's responsibility to fill the checklist out over time and have staff sign off on it, and when it's completed, we would write them a letter of recommendation to be used in applying for jobs, school, whateva. So....do yall have anything like this in place? Or any other relevant Earn-a-Bike or alternative youth programming materials I can creep and reap? SEND THEM TO ME! Thanks buddiez! Lauren @ OCB

Disabling frames to be scrapped?

Our shop recently changed our procedure regarding scrap bikes: any donated bikes that we conclude we will scrap rather than rehab & redistribute are now disabled by cutting the frame of the bike. Recently, some donated bike that had been put in our scrap pile appeared on Craigslist. We had two concerns: first, that donors would be unhappy that their donations were being sold by another party, and second that we could develop a reputation as a source of scrap bikes to be picked and sold elsewhere (and usually those bikes were beyond safe repair). I'd like to hear other perspectives. Is controlling the use of donated bikes (to maintain the integrity of a donation as well as the safety of bikes coming through the shop) worth disabling a bike that might otherwise be reused downstream? Ride club curriculum

Hi folks, I'm also new to this resource, but loving it! Forgive me if this sort of thing has already been asked, or if you're getting this a second time because I've already emailed you personally. I'm working with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and Neighborhood Bike Works to create a curriculum toolkit for a month-long youth ride club. We'd love to hear from everyone with youth ride clubs (or even adult programs, if they're not endurance training-based), and we're especially interested in projects concerned with environmental stewardship. Do you have any sort of curriculum materials for anything in these areas? I'd love to see comprehensive curriculum, but even week-by-week topics/bullet points would be really helpful. I'm trying to find some free/cheap software to help organize our new community bikeshop's mushrooming files. I've looked at BigTent, GroupSpaces, MemberPlanet, and SilkStart...they don't do what I need them to, and really just create more work... Features wishlist includes: - Membership management (with admin ability to add members, a way to attach a signed waiver to each member account, and easy option to send out membership renewal reminders) - Shop calendar (with sign-up options) - Donor management (with option to track donations) - Online payment option (or ability to link to PayPal) Any advice (pro/con) about the software you've tried would be greatly appreciated. Announcing: Peterborough Youth Bike Summit

Greetings from up north in Peterborough, Ontario! I am writing to announce Peterborough is gearing up to host its first ever Youth Bike Summit. The summit theme is "People Powered! DIY Bicycle Friendly Communities", and the event is scheduled to occur on October 4, 2014. The summit will feature youth-lead workshops and discussions, a DIY bike maker's space, bike maintenance courses, and youth advocacy opportunities. The summit will run concurrently with our 4th annual Peterborough and the Kawarthas Cycling Summit, but the Youth Bike Summit will be entirely youth-lead and youth-oriented. We are currently seeking workshop facilitators, presenters, and maker's space contributors. A call for proposals is attached to this email, and we gladly accept out of town proposals. We have a small budget to help cover speaker costs, and are happy to help arrange billet in Peterborough if your presentation is selected. San Diego's Bikes del Pueblo needs your help!

Hello! We are Bikes del Pueblo, San Diego's bike kitchen! We've been operating since 2008 from member's garages and basements, doing clinics and workshops with a lot of local organizations, and have been present at our Farmer's Market every Saturday since 4 years! We also went to Bici!Bici! in Oakland last year and many of our members have visited and been inspired by other Bike Kitchen in the US and other countries. Now we want to get a permanent workspace so we could be open more days, do more workshops, accommodate more people at the same time, store more donations, etc... I am sure you know how having a space is important for a bike kitchen! Kids and shifting: Tips on how to teach

Later this month, the Des Moines Bicycle Collective will sponsor our fifth annual Bike Camp for kids at an inner-city YMCA. The week-long camp is generally a highlight of the year. Okay, one exception: Gears are our friends, but this has been a challenging message to get through to some kids. The entire notion of shifting and anticipating a shift seems beyond what some middle-school kids can get their heads around. And, those lousy, unreliable grip shift systems on entry-level bikes don’t make it any easier. What is working in your community for instruction tips? I almost hate to do this, but I’m ready to ride up a moderate hill with each kid to make sure they understand how helpful gears can be. I welcome your suggestions. Mucho thanks! In my workshop we have one pretty cool way of storing little, easy to lose parts like bolts, nuts, and washers. We have a board which is mounted to the wall length-wise and is protruding out from the wall at about a 45 degree angle (The top of the board is connected to the wall about 6 inches away from the wall itself). We have twist on jar lids screwed to this board with the jars full of the little bits screwed in. When we need something you just unscrew the jar, get the part and when you're done you find the matching lid to the jar and screw it back in. Ghost bikes and collective action

Hi everyone, I'm writing with sad news from Mexico City. A cyclist was killed two days ago by a drunk police officer who hit him and another cyclist who is still alive but in critical condition in the hospital. It happened in downtown around a very busy area and workers from the mercados nearby caught the police officer who tried to run away after the crash, but immediately, more than a 100 riot cops arrived to save the cop and to arrest people who were trying to make justice on their own hands. An ambulance never showed up. Today the chief of the police department announced that the cop who was driving was negative on the alcohol test, so she is only going to get fired but will face no other charges. We are so sad, angry and feel powerless about not being able to do much. Today we are going to have a ride at night in memory of the dead cyclist and on saturday we will install a ghost bike for him. I'd like to hear what you all have done in these cases, what else besides ghost bikes and rides have you done when you have faced such terrible situations like this one? Any ideas? Have you documented any action you have done? Also, I know legal procedures may be so different but, have any of you used any legal tool in these situations? Thanks so much. Best, Jim -- *Jimena D. bicycle-based libraries?

i've got a friend who's part of a group that is interested in starting a bicycle based library in the Los Angeles area. They're still working out most of the details, but basically imagine a cargo bike or trailer with a bunch of books that rides around and parks and has books available for checkout/free Is anyone involved in something like this? Or know of projects like this? I know I saw a video of one a long time ago but can't recall where. The bike/library in that video had a taller wooden box with swing-open doors and was primarily a homeless outreach program at the beginning. I would love some links if you know of any. Would also love to put my friend in touch with someone who's done it before to chat about the process of getting it set up, equipment, costs, etc. The person I know who's involved is a recent (past two years or so) convert to the awesomeness of bikes, so a lot of nuts and bolts (literally and figuratively) of this thing can likely use some experienced guidance. Hi All! Interbike's way, way around the corner, September 10th-12th with the Outdoor Demo the two days before. As you probably know, the industry's dog-and-pony show is a great environment for Collectives to meet retailers and shop owners and let them know about all the great ways to get involved with what we do on a local and national level. Last year we didn't get a ticket confirmation until the LAST MINUTE, which was annoying, so I wanted to reach out to the network early this year with two things. 1. Would you like to go and get a (free) ticket through us? 2. what resources should we bring to bear and share with the cycling industry? *1. If you'd like to go, sign up on this sheet and fill out the relevant tabs. *So if you're needing a hotel room, put yourself down in one of the slots, we aim to put 4-6 people in each room to keep 'em cheap. If you're looking to carpool, put down your arrival/departure details and room in your vehicle, if applicable. Going to Interbike with us comes with responsibility: Firstly, everyone attending has to sign up for two shifts at the Bicycle Collective Network booth (third tab below), where we'll be representing the Bicycle Collective and the Alliance for Walking and Biking. Secondly, we will not tolerate conduct that doesn't represent us favorably to the rest of the bicycling industry. Being inconsiderate of an exhibitor's time, heckling for swag or deals from people you haven't developed a relationship with or who haven't clearly offered that sort of thing, or generally behaving like a child will earn you a boot from the show. We're not willing to jeopardize the reputation of the Bicycle Collective Network. I volunteer with the community bike project in Bloomington, IN. If the bikes need a ride to a new home and if the moving truck costs are covered, I'd be willing to figure out how to schedule time to travel up to St. Paul and drive them to a place like the one mentioned in Chicago. Hello, The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign has the same issue every year. We partner with Working Bikes out of Chicago. They collect bikes and package them in shipping containers for shipment to places that have programs setup to repair and distribute the bikes in South America and I think Africa as well. This April they actually came to us with a shipping container and helped us send 420 bikes to Le Salvador directly from our warehouse. You would have to ask, but I think they would be willing to pick the bikes up. Cycles for Change in St. Paul, MN is kind of overloaded with bikes. If any community bike shops were looking for bikes, we could easily give you 10, 25, 50, 100, or potentially more (we will likely have as many as 200 that we're trying to get rid of). We're 2 talking 10-speeds, 26" mountain bikes, 3-speeds, some4" mountain bikes. Nothing super fancy - lots of Murrey, Magna, Schwinn, Huffy, etc. All in decent to good condition - we've junked the magnas with broken shifters and wrecked wheels, so all the bikes available are reasonably fixable. But we have mostly pulled out the Specialized Hard Rock or Raleigh Olympian quality mountain or road bikes for use in other of our programs, so there's nothing super high quality. Anyways. If there's anyone working on a bike project in or around the Twin Cities, or another bike project within a reasonable truck rental distance - we'd be happy to provide bikes. We would even potentially contribute 25-50% of the cost of a truck rental for an organization who wants these bikes - we're at the point where they'll end up being scrapped, and they're definitely usable bikes. We'd love to help them find a good home.
