Hey Folks, Quick couple of questions to those who break up their workshop hours and have sales-only hours/days. How does that work for you? How do your users / volunteers feel about it? What are you selling? Any "wow, we're surprised at how well Widget X sells!" items you'd recommend? Do you get a lot of people coming in hoping to fix "just this one thing?" during the sales-only time? This is a main concern of mine. No cash register; how can we accept cash payments without coming off as shady?

Hi all! We're a new bike collective operating out of a 10x10 storage unit. To raise funds, we're selling a few of our nicer bikes on Craigslist at market value, but when someone pays us, I think it looks unprofessional (and perhaps even shady) to just stick the money in one of our pockets. We don't have the space, money or need for a "proper" electronic cash register. In all honesty, after the customer leaves we'll just put it in an envelope and stick it in our pocket until we get to the bank, so this is just a matter of what the customer sees. Here are a few options: * I have a little metal cash box. We could mount it to our tool pegboard and put the money in there, but then again, putting a customer's $100-$300 in a tiny metal cash box in an open space with lots of teenaged volunteers around could look just as bad. * Maybe we'd be best off pulling out an envelope, writing "Bike Broward customer name $100" on it, putting the money inside the envelope and into our pocket, then writing them a receipt on carbon paper? * We could also request payment by check for bikes over, say, $100, but we don't have our 501(c)(3) yet, so it'd have to be in my own name, which isn't a much better option. Am I just overreacting? We're all 18 or younger and won't have our 501(c)(3) for a couple of months, so I've been putting a lot of work into having a reasonably professional appearance. Traffic model, interesting art piece, short video

Came across this this evening, and while he doesn't address any specific traffic issues or solutions, he did build a semi-automated giant model of a city with small cars and trains and it's very kinetic and sort of pretty. Does anyone know a Mike Cipolla, who left his Univega Alpina mountain bike in Amsterdam, the Netherlands?

Hello Bike Think Tankers, My excuses for being off-topic, but a Dutch friend of mine has been trying to reach a Californian named Mike Cipolla, who left a very nicely kept 1995-vintage mountain bike on his balcony, five years ago. Mike was supposed to come back for it, someday. About 18 months ago, he and Arie fell out of email contact. Arie tells me that he is pretty sure Mike is/was a professional bike mechanic, and worked in a bike collective of some sort. He is in his late 20s or early 30s. The bike is in excellent condition, the wheels are within a millimeter of being perfectly true. There is also a folding Rhode Gear trailer that goes with it. Arie would like the use of his balcony back, as well as to get back in touch with Mike. Clearly the Univega was well-loved, and we want to make one last effort to find Mike before getting rid of it. Dreams For Kid's "Street Dreams" Program

Good Morning, Dreams For Kids is biking across America to raise awareness for the growing epidemic of youth homelessness. Our Street Dreams Campaign” will send one passionate man, Alex Petrou, cycling across the country to increase awareness for the 1.5 million children currently living in poverty in the U.S. He will ride from Los Angeles to New York in two months, sleeping in homeless shelters and stopping at bicycle collectives, schools and universities to educate the country on the increasing number of homeless youth in the U.S. We are looking to partner with bicycle collectives due to your unrelenting support for sustainable, educational and egalitarian programs. Our aligning interest and values are present in both Dreams For Kid’s and bicycle collectives’ passion to empower, sustain and take responsibility for the future human condition. Homelessness is a product of the way cities, administration and individual lives are structured. We have chosen to partner with the cycling community because it aims at disrupting these habitual attitudes towards transportation and customary routines. We believe this can consequently lead individuals out of homelessness. We have contacted you to invite you to participate in our Street Dreams project through various different avenues. Wheel Rack

I noted the use of a 2" x 4" as a fork rack and that looks like a good idea. I tried to do a search of the archives for ideas on wheel racks and the query failed. So other than hooks from the ceiling, what ideas have folks seen for storing wheels? I am working on improving my emt handlebar rack, will post a picture of it when it is completed. Here is how the work benches turned out. I wasn't quite done but you get the idea. I photocopied the tools then used polyurethane to seal the picture to the pegboard with a description printed out above them. I also got hooks with a security pin from McMaster-Carr and secured them with a hook holder from Hartville Tool. Bailing wire also works. ceiling ideas

Key Congressional leaders are attacking Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School, and Recreational trails and are taking steps to cut off dedicated federal funding for bicycling and walking. House Transportation Chairman John Mica (R-FL) announced today that his transportation bill will eliminate dedicated funding for bicycling and walking, including Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and the Recreational Trails Program, and discourages states from choosing to spend their dollars on these activities that are "not in the federal interest." Chairman Mica's statement that these programs remain "eligible" for funding is worthless; without dedicated funding for these three programs, they are effectively eliminated. Things on the Senate side are not much better. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the lead Republican negotiator on the transportation bill, declared that one of his TOP THREE priorities for the transportation bill is to eliminate 'frivolous spending for bike trails.' This is in direct conflict with Senator Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) commitment to maintain dedicated funding for biking and walking. However, the Senate is working towards a bi-partisan solution, and Senator Inhofe's comments mean funding for bicycle and pedestrian programs is at risk of total elimination. Help protect Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and Recreational Trails. Contact your Members of Congress and tell them to reach out to Senators Inhofe, Boxer, and Congressman Mica to urge them to continue funding for these important bicycling and walking programs. Need some good facts to bolster your argument? Read on: Not in the federal interest? Biking and walking make up 12 percent of all trips in the US - even as funding for biking and walking projects only accounts for 1.5% of the federal transportation budget. That is more than 4 billion bicycle trips and 40 billion walking trips a year, including trips to work, school, shopping and for recreation and tourism. Frivolous? Two-thirds of all pedestrian deaths are on federally funded highways. One-third of children's traffic deaths happen when children are walking or bicycling and are struck by cars. Bicycling and walking programs build sidewalks, crosswalks and bikeways-improving accessibility and saving lives. The Facts * Biking and walking are important forms of transportation, and funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements is a very efficient use of federal transportation dollars. Portland, OR built 300 miles of bike lanes and trails for the cost of one mile of highway. * These projects create jobs and build local economies. Building bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure creates 46% more jobs than building road-only projects per million dollars spent. Cities that invest in bicycle and pedestrian projects turn downtowns into destinations, and capitalize on increased business activity. * Eliminating the 1.5% of transportation funding spent on bike/ped would have no meaningful impact on the federal budget, but instead, decreases transportation options for American families in a time of rising gas prices and an uncertain economy. Why Act Now? Both the House and Senate long-term transportation bills are being written as we speak. We still have a chance of influencing the outcomes. Let's make sure that funding for biking and walking programs don't disappear for many years. We need every Senator to tell Senators Boxer and Inhofe that bicycling and walking are vital parts of our transportation system, and that there must be dedicated funding for sidewalks, bike lanes and trails to ensure that bicyclists and pedestrians are safe.
