Bulk Used Parts

Would anybody out there be interested in receiving bulk shipments of used bike parts? Back Alley Bikes collects parts from hundreds of bikes every year and many of them are used at a much slower rate than they arrive. We are exploring the idea of running a Community Shared Bike Parts program (after the model of CSAs in communities with access to local agriculture) or simply packaging parts in bulk and shipping them to fellow bike collectives upon request. Please respond with your thoughts. Would you be interested in receiving parts for a fee to cover our costs? Please take a look and share far and wide! * Director of Youth Programs – Neighborhood Bike Works* *Position Summary:* Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) is seeking a full-time Director of Youth Programs to lead our organization’s youth bike-education programming. This position assumes primary responsibility for directing and developing all youth programs, and supervising and supporting the professional development of all youth program staff. Additionally, the Director of Youth Programs works with the Executive Director and other department managers as part of NBW’s leadership team, represents NBW and its programming to funders, community partners, youth, and families; and partners with Board, other staff, and volunteers to develop the organizational resources of NBW. *About Neighborhood Bike Works:* In 2017, NBW will build on its recent growth and reloication to a new community shop and bike education hub. NBW is celebrating 20 years of using bikes as the hook to engage youth in positive out-of-school-time activities. Share feedback with all staff and work with others to promote programs externally. *Administrative and Strategic Oversight* (5%) · Work with Executive Director to create and update risk management policies and guidelines as needed. · Participate in NBW’s strategic planning process and assist in developing short and long-term program plans for core and advanced programs. *Qualifications:* The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of management experience in a non-profit setting or related field, a proven track record successfully supervising and supporting staff and volunteers, and experience working with diverse populations including youth of color and those from low-income families. Background knowledge of Philadelphia’s education system, history, bicycling community, and networks of youth development organizations is preferred. Candidates with non-traditional work and education experience are encouraged – please tell us about those experiences that qualify you for this position. bike maintenance training for a local Boys and Girls club

My community does not have a bike coop. I repair donated bikes and give them away through local charities and offer free bike clinics around town (library, churches, etc). I have been donating bikes to the local Boys and Girls club and now have been asked to give bike maintenance training to some of the kids. The kids are middle schoolers, we have no dedicated space, there are no tools except what I can provide, I get about an hour a week, and I am enjoying every minute of it. I started out going over how to do a pre-ride safety check, changing tires and tubes, and things like that. It quickly be came a problems course - a bike would show up and we diagnose what needs to be done to get the bike safely back on the road, I supervise the kids when they fix it, and the bike immediately finds a new happy owner. Basket cases go to my shop and I make them work. I am looking for pointers to any kind of similar programs to see what they cover and get any advise that might be available. We are willing to look for some here in Cleveland and go help them fix them, so the bikes don't have to be in perfect riding condition -- just good enough to be fixable and decent enough to stay in repair in a developing country without a lot of access to bike shops. Y'all! Bike! Bike! has come and gone. PLEASE O PLEASE post workshop notes and thoughts on how it went and what you remember of major points of discussion I will still mail one chocolate bar and/or thank you card to each person who takes detailed notes and posts or emails them. On a related note, presumably most of your community bike shops take notes at meetings, it helps keep everyone who can't attend on the same page. I mean, having never attended (ideological transportation preferences + cost to travel). I say this with so much love for the people of bike!bike! and thinktank: with notes in past years either absent or mostly-absent, it sort of feels like y'all have unintentionally developed something of a secret cabal. How did it go!? And if there aren't notes from this year, is there any way to at least get some sort of consensus on their accessibility value? We are wrapping up a busy summer and transitioning into an exciting Fall. We are so grateful for the immense support we received for the campaign to purchase the property at 732 S. 1st St. W. We had a wild turn near the end of the capital campaign, and still have some work ahead of us to become the new owner. Please read the following news article about the state of our efforts to purchase our home. To view pictures and a summary of the entire Cycles of Change campaign timeline click here. As a piece to finish off the financing of the property, we are extremely close to offering promissory notes to the community. These are essentially loans that will be paid back by Free Cycles over time through a combination of tenant rental income, continued fundraising, and growth in program revenue. The future is bright! Please be patient as we work through finalizing the specific details of these notes. Although our final stage of our campaign is not actively canvassing, phone-banking, or asking for donations, we sure welcome and appreciate them. Capital Campaign and Re-fitting our space: Suggestions?

Urban Bike Project of Wilmington Delaware will soon be embarking on a Capital Campaign to structurally stabilize and re-fit our current location which is an 100+ year old city-owned former police carriage barn. We are a non-profit community bike shop located in a low income inner city area. We have an architect engaged to help with some preliminary plans and drawings, and we've met with a number of our key volunteers to discuss how we can change our current space to maximize efficiency. This is a rather broad question, but I'm wondering if anyone has any practical experience on do's and don't's for such an undertaking or any other useful advice? We're trying to co-locate as best as possible our tools and work-stands and locate our used parts closer as well. This will limit the movement required with our current design and allow us to keep a closer watch on things to limit theft as best we can. Also trying to formalize a waiting area to help prevent customers wandering which is a particular problem during Youth Open Shop night,but also with adults. As I said, a rather broad topic but maybe someone on this list has real experience that they want to share. If you know a smarter way to not autorespond to the thinktank every time an email gets sent to the thinktank, please feel free to share it with us. Tulsa oklahoma bike coops?

NY Mechanical Gardens FIRST WORKSHOP!

Hello from Brooklyn! It's been a busy season trying to get our coop off the ground, including some setbacks over the recent months, but last night marked a real milestone for us: *We had our first real workshop, in a space that might become our regular home!* The backstory is that a local women's cycling group let me know they were prepping for a big upcoming ride that was going to be a real challenge for them. We pitched staging an event so that their people could have access to a well-staffed open workshop where we could help them head off problems and feel more empowered about their bikes. AND we pitched it to a church space that looks like they're going to invite us to move in and treat it as our home. AND, it was a smashing success. We publicized through a few channels, mostly women's cycling groups, and got a really great turnout from minute 1 right through to the end. People had a ball. Mechanical Gardens volunteers did great with putting the tools in the riders' hands. Lots of bikes got fixed. Great diversity in the crowd. Watermelon got eaten. It was pretty much just perfect. It was also the first real moment of life for New York City's first-ever bike coop. And it was the first moment that this dream I've had of starting a coop here -- a dream you all made me feel was possible -- has actually seemed like it might really be coming true. Last night was a definitive milestone for us, and I'm dedicating it to you all. Hi, all! We are Community Bike Works, a youth development program in Allentown, PA. We plan to serve about 500 youth in our Earn a Bike and Junior Earn a Bike programs this year. Often our students will report that their bikes have been lost or stolen within several months of their earning them. Has anyone implemented any shop procedures that work well to track the bikes that leave their shop, or otherwise to prevent/deter thefts, especially for young people? B!KE offers a combo lock with each earned bicycle and in our last Earn-A-Bike session we specifically teach how to lock a bike. Many youth do still trade, or sometimes sell, their bicycles. Our official policy is that you can't earn another bike for one year.
