kids' earn a bike + structure, less is more?

hi fellow bike geeks. josh from community cycles in boulder, co. i'm one of the directors of our kids' earnabike (EAB) program, and we're interested in making it better. to date, we've just kind of run it like open shop with kids in the shop instead of grownups. i would like to incorporate more structure, a little more consistancy from EAB'er to EAB'er. i heard someone at bike bike say that he had the kids list 27 parts of a bicycle as a sort of "final exam", to show that they'd been paying attention, etc. i've taken this on, but i sort of adapt it to each kid. (i realize that we all learn differently, at different levels/speeds/etc, and want to be sensitive to that. the way i tailor the listing bike parts quiz is to adjust the number of parts, as well as how free-flowing and specific i am with hints ("you sit on this part," vs "it's what screws onto the end of a spoke..."). i really like this activity, since it challenges the kids, they seem to thrive on it, struggling to remember, and usually there's other kids in the shop who are watching, but not taking the "test", so they have to keep quiet, even though they KNOW the lister is leaving out the pedals, etc...it makes for some lively shop activity, and there are usually some laughs going on, as well. anyway, i'm interested in hearing about some other programs that deal with kids specifically. our kids' EAB progam is for 10-16 yrs old, and we've had all of them. we try to keep the EAB'er:facilitator ratio to 2:1 at the most, to keep their attention focused, and to not bore them while they wait for a question/tool help. do you do sit down lesson/lecture type stuff? i've come up with a few visual demonstrations with parts from our parts bins, to help show how a derailleur works, the headset, etc...and i'd like to incorporate more of this kind of thing into our grown-up workshops, like (i think) i saw bicas does in tucson, from the film shown at bikebike...have a bunch of bottom brackets cut off of bikes, with the spindles and cranks and chainrings in place, and have the each take it apart, sort of classroom style. of course, with kids, we'd have to limit this sort of lesson to once or twice per night (3-4 hour nights...) to keep from boring them to tears. but sometimes i think having all the cables and wheels and spinning shiny things on a complete/almost complete bike is too distracting... any ideas or solutions you guys have would be awesome and much appreciated. by us and the kids we struggle to keep engaged. thanks. josh.

working for parts?

hi everyone, josh from community cycles in boulder, co here. we discussed with many of you at bike bike, and have brought the idea home, that we could offer some sort of work-for-parts deal. right now, we're thinking of some sort of "after you voliunteer 6 hours per week, any hours you work count towards your shop credit at $x/hr" set up. i believe some of you have similar programs. what kind of systems do you all have with regards to this? what kind of problems have arisen? solutions? i believe someone before mentioned cherrypicking. what we're thinking is that once volunteers have reached a set number of hours per week, they become eligible to work for shop credit (most likely not new parts). at that point, they choose a part/parts/bike/bikes they would like to earn, and then begin working towards that with hours spent in the shop, working on other shop/organizational needs. (volunteers couldn't get credit for working on a bike they're going to take home with shop credit earned working on...you get the idea.) obviously some sort of "if you choose a part, work towards it, and then we don't see you in two weeks" policy would need to be in place, but that's not hard to keep track of. thanks for your help, and i'm sure i'm not the only one to see bikebike emails popping up already!!! josh/community cycles

Fundraising Ideas?

Myself and several students from the local college are starting up a bike co-op in our town and are looking to raise funds to buy tools and acquire space. The college's homecoming event is next week and we were able to get a vendor booth for free. While we primarly want to get the word out about what we're doing and get some bikes, this seems like an excellent opportunity to raise some funds. There will be several other vendors there selling coffee, drinks, and food. Do you guys have any ideas about what we can sell that will set us apart from the others? Contract Language for Fiscal Sponsorship

Velo-rutionaries, So, similar to Bike Pittsburgh and Free Ride, many of our collectives use our local bike advocacy organizations as their fiscal 501(c)3 sponsor. We're going to do the same over here in fair santa barbara, but we want to be clear about our autonomy and that we will be reviewing and need to renew the agreement every two years. In our agreement with the Bike Coalition we'd like to lay this all out so the terms of the relation don't get muddyed later on. Insurance issues

So I called American Specialty Insurance, the Insurance Provider for the League of American Bicyclists, as recommended in the wiki and was told that they only offer insurance for club rides, not for organizations. We aren't interested in doing rides or races or anything like that, we basically just need insurance for the shop. (I think i've seen $1M in liability recommended on the list). Am I being fed a line by Am Specialty? I emailed LAB directly and have not received a reply in two weeks, nor do I see a phone number telling me it wouldn't be very good insurance if I can't even get a hold of them. Did I read all this wrong? What am I missing? If i'm not missing anything where do you shops go to get the liability coverage? Thanks, Andrew

Donated Space Tax deductable?

Does anyone know how donated space works, tax exemption wise? We have a fiscal agent and are now looking for space. We think we have found a good space. $600 a month all utilities plus wi-fi included. As a bonus the other section of the building is an auto shop where they have pipe benders and welding equipment that we could use on occasion. It's located on the edge of our downtown on a high traffic street. Pretty ideal really. He will give it to us for 600 a month if he can write off the difference of what he would normally charge (1200). I have been told this is a legit way of doing things but want to know the specifics (do we give him a donation receipt every month with our rent check?) Has anyone worked out something like this? hey all, we had our first meeting last night and it was a success.... a few questions came up. 1. Are there grants out there just for start-up if you don't have non-profit status yet? (it costs 500 to get nonprofit status) 2. We heard there's a difference between being a non-profit and being a tax-deductible organization. Whats the legal term for this? Does anyone know the difference? 3. Our next goal is fundraising. retail business accounts

I am curious what type of relationship many community shops have with bicycle retail suppliers such as QBP. As of now, we have a relationship with a few local bike shops to purchase tools and parts. However we are trying to move into some small retail (mainly locks, tubes and helmets). I looked up the requirements for an account with QBP and J&B suppliers, both looked like they didn't fit our model, which is primarily youth programming with community bike shop hours two days a week. Bicycle Safety Checklist

Stand in front of the bike Push on the brake levers to test if the clamps are loose Push on shift levers to test if the clamps are loose Push down on the bars to test if the stem bar clamp is loose Push on bar ends to see if their clamps are loose G rab the front wheel tightly between your legs Twist the bars to test if the stem is too loose Place both hands on the handlebar, one on each side, Grab only the front brake lever and clamp it down tightly. Rock the bike forward and back to test if the headset is too loose. With brake still camped rock bike back and forth and look at the brake clamp and adjustment bolts/ nuts to see if they are too loose. Watch the brake pads, slowly clamp the front and rear brake levers, do both the pads touch both side of the rim before when the brake lever still has at least a inch of space between the lever and the bar. If not the cable is too loose. Grasp the front brake pads and try to twist them on the brake arms. (correctly tightened brake pads will not twist) Lift up the bike by the top tube and see if the headset is too tight. do the handle bars and wheel roll side to side easily in the headset Grasp the front wheel between two fingers, shake rapidly to see if the bearing are too loose Release the front wheel and see if it spins one way and then the other Testing to see if the bearings are too tight. Spin the wheel rapidly and check the true of the wheel Check if the brake pads are centered With an open hand, smack the side of the nose of the saddle to check if the seat clamp or the seat post clamp are loose Stand beside the bicycle Reach down and grasp a crank arm, rattle it side to side to see if the bottom bracket is too loose (do not hold the pedal) With an open hand, smack the side of the nose of the saddle to check if the seat clamp or the seat post clamp are loose Grasp the rear brake pads and try to twist them on the brake arms. (correctly tightened brake pads will not twist) Grasp the rear wheel between two fingers, shake rapidly to see if the bearing are too loose Spin the wheel rapidly and check the true of the wheel Check if the brake pads are centered I can do all of this in 30 seconds to a minute of time If you have a bike stand Place bike in stand Check shift lever cable tension is too loose Violently Shift to large cog / low gear Check to see if low set screw is too loose (over shifting into spokes) or too tight (will not shift to large cog/ low gear) stop rear wheel Turn crank slowly and test the shifting from low gear to high gear for any hesitation, over shifts, ( adjust or replace cable depending on results.) >From behind check the derailleur cage is not bent in towards the spokes. it should be parallel to the cogs. Check that the chain will not Look from the side at the distance between the nearest chainring tooth and the front derailleur outer cage. Should be 1 mm or less Put chain in middle chain ring and middle cog Look from above to see if the front derailleur cage sides are parallel to the chain. Shift chain into middle cog in the rear and then shift front derailleur from low to high gear and back to low to check limit set screws. The check can be done in a minute. dealing with volunteers who have been really offensive?

does any shop have a process for dealing with volunteers who have stepped far over the line? to the point that the volunteer had to take a break from the shop? and then the volunteer wanted to come back? let's say that this volunteer, although a very dependable one, makes other shop participants feel so uncomfortable that they avoid coming to the shop when they know that this volunteer will be there. how do you reconcile your politics with your feelings when that volunteer personally wronged you repeatedly in and outside of the shop? two wheels good, rachael

we've definitely had some issues with this. i think it helps to some degree that we are small and that we aren't an officially registered non-profit- we don't have bureaucracy, we have the monthly meeting. we're all friends, we all see each other on a regular basis (outside of the bikeshop). however, it also hurts us sometimes. we've had one former mechanic and one former volunteer in particular who had serious problems with un-called for aggression and violence in the community at large and in the shop. in both situations, in part because we are so small, collective members have been wary of confronting them... we also lacked the mechanisms for supporting these people in addressing their problems, and now they're both moving to other communities (asheville, NC and St. petersburg, FL). for the most part, we've survived pretty well by just setting the tone with our own behaviors. i just wish we were able to do more than just boot people from the project, and that we had been faster to address these problems in the first place. = -- Powered By Outblaze

Dear bike enthusiasts, Hello from Portland, OR. I may have already contacted some of you, but decided this was a better route to go. My name is Ariel or RaRa. I'm hoping to start a bike mechanic collective here in Portland, as we don't yet have an affordable space for the public to go to work on bikes and learn from experienced mechanics for free. I've come up with 6 questions that would help me on my way to actualizing this idea. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your interest in this project. Questions for Bike projects: 1. How did your project begin? (tell me as much or little about what was involved to get you started…. From idea to actualization) 2. We have one rule that covers most behaviors. Rule #1: Act like a positive professional. The kids and adults all have to follow that rule at all times. If they do not follow rule one, then they must leave for the day, they are invited to come back the next day if they have not done criminal activity. All, Interbike (www.interbike.com) is an incredible opportunity for bike collectives, do we (as a collective of collectives and co-operatives) want to set up complimentary advocacy booth there? This would be next to IMBA, Thunderhead Alliance, LAB, Adventure Cycling, etc.,... The main concern is that we can get the materials created for the booth and then have enough people to staff the booth through the event. hey everyone, josh from community cycles in boulder, colorado here. still coming down from bikebike, as i'm sure a lot of you are as well. i don't remember who it was that mentioned it, but someone at bikebike mentioned that they get a lot of cruiser bikes, and don't have any use for them, so they go into the recycle/scrap metal pile. our shop has a big demand for them. i'm wondering if we couldn't use this list for some sort of trade dealings. or if there's something we get a lot of and someone else could use...some sort of parts exchange. shipping would be murder, but perhaps we could figure something out? any suggestions/ideas in that vein? thanks. josh. hey, its ariel again from the bikefarm project: To everyone whose sent me a response, Thank you..I still wpi;d appreciate hearing from those who haven't yet, but take your time. Its great to hear how all these projects got started... each in its own unique way. good news: I've found a lawyer! At this point, he's asked me to collect the articles of exemption from projects who have filed for 501c3 and gotton it. We'd like to use your application forms as a basis for wording on our own forms. Thus far, I have the exemption forms of SOPO and the Bicycle Kitchen from http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=IRS_Form_1023 If you are an organization whose achieved 501c3 status, I would really like a copy of your exemption forms. I know its difficult to dig these up, but it would be really helpful for me, as the more I have the better chance i'll be able to achieve this status here in portland. maybe you could scan them, or even send me paper forms in the mail if thats easier. Hi all, This is PJ Park of the Mt Rainier, MD Bike Coop. I had a wonderful time at the conference this past weekend. I also had a wonderful time biking to the conference from DC on the C and O Canal and Great Allegheny Passage trails! On the trail I met Mike Shih of the Neighborhood Bike Project in Philly. We biked Wed. and Thursday, heading into PGH in the evening rain, guided from McKeesport to FreeRide! by Erok! At Free Ride! I met the Mary, Jessica, Luis, Erok, and Stewart from PGH, and then I helped Kim of Ft Collins fix up a bike. Later, I biked over with Mike Shih to our host Rob's place near BBT. Rob was an awesome and gracious host. Dropped over to BBT that night and met more folks. Friday, I attended some good workshops: Getting Tools, Getting and Keeping a Space, and Volunteers. I wanted to know how my coop could sell bikes even though we are in a non-commercial zoned space. People said anyone can receive donations in return for goods and services. I learned that different coops have different licenses: business, non-profit/501c3, sponsored fiscally by a non-profit, nothing, etc. I liked getting a sense of the diversity of projects. Friday night we had a good ride around Pittsburgh. It's so beautiful! I love the hills, vistas, and bridges. It was so nice to enjoy Friday and Sat evenings with large group of bike coop bikers:) Sat. I attended the AGRAPTO workshop and won a hat and a woven cloth for my attentiveness, willingness to sing, and my Spanish skills. I donned my hat at the SpandeXXX party Sat night. The party rocked btw! Sunday, I collected signatures for the Environmental Defense Undo Global Warming campaign (undoit.org) asking our senators to support the Climate Stewardship Act which will set up a cap and trade system and reduce emissions 60-80% by 2050. I've been collecting sigs on my bicycle journey to brazil (http://www.biketobrazil.blogspot.com). The petition has over 642,000 signatories now! After filling my petition sheets with signatures, I attended the end of the Maya Pedal workshop. Then sadly, I had to leave. It was a wonderful conference. I rode home with Mike McMillan of Rockville Bikes for the World and Colin of Phoenix Bike Project of Arlington, VA. One of the best parts of the conference was collaborating with other coops in my area. Thank you for reading. Shop Phones

So here at Sopo, we don't have a phone in the shop. If we did, we would spend most of our open shop hours responding to messages. So we have been using our personal cell phones. However, a friend hooked us up with an invite to a service called Grand Central (http://www.grandcentral.com/). This gives you a number and then you have it forward to whatever number. It has a lot of features and settings that I'm not going to blather on about. So if anyone wants an invite, I'm more than happy to use them for other shops until I run out. The shops that I hook up can use their invites to hook up others and so on. All I need is your name and email. Enjoy, Jay

Why bikes? Biking is a great way to have fun and be political just by pedaling. Especially in a group, people pay attention to your hard, unconventional transportation method and come to events, ask questions, or donate good food or funds for your cause along the way. As activists and organizers we want people's attention since we want people to know about U.S. foreign policy in the Caribbean and the Americas! Finally, doing something difficult for a cause is a compelling reason for friends and family and other supporters to give cyclers money for solidarity work. Why NYC to Washington D.C.? CISPES is moving the national office from NYC to Washington D.C. to be really in belly of the beast, and to be closer to other solidarity organizations we work with (like Quixote Center!) that are already thriving there and creating social change. Helooooo Bike Bikers!!! Only a few days left!! If you sent in a registration form, and we haven't contacted you about housing, please contact me. We tried to contact everybody, but i know some slipped through the cracks due to wrong phone numbers, bad handwriting, and just the overwhelming task of it all. If you sent it in in the past few days, expect to be contacted today. We will be at Free Ride Thursday nite from 6-10, and then at the conference at about 8 in the morning on friday, so you can check in there and find out more info. Here is a completely incomplete list of things to bring to the conference. -Spandex- There is a spandex themed party on Saturday Nite at Free Ride (serious) -Bike -BRING A BIKE LOCK (even if you can't bring a bike) -Helmet, blinkys (it gets dark on some streets) -Tent if camping -Merch from your shop for trading -Blank t shirts for screening (we'll have a Bike Bike screen available-it looks nice) -Short movie of your shop/town -Print and digital photos of your shop- either on cd or jump drive, or compact flash card, especially if you have particularly crafty organization ideas -Brochures, fliers, posters from your shop -Paperwork/forms/manuals/etc. from your own shop that you might want to share -Documentation of programs, budgets, curricula, etc -Anything you've got really figured out that might be useful to share with others. -Tips & tricks. Getting Around Pittsburgh for Bike Bike

If you've never been to Pittsburgh before, you are in for a treat. However, it ain't flat and I am totally prepared to proudly walk my bike up a hill or two. But, Pittsburgh also has a pretty great bus system, and is lucky enough to be on Google Transit (www.google.com/transit). Last time I was there, they were getting more and more bike racks on the buses. Last Call Bike 101

Hello Bike Bikers, Can you believe the conference is just days away!! We will soon send out more info on the things that you should bring with you to the conference and some more logistical info. Many people have been writing to ask about the cost of the conference and what the housing accommodations are. We are asking for donations at the conference to cover the cost of food, space rental, print materials etc. And as far as housing is concerned- if you send in a registration form (which everyone coming to the conference needs to do) it asks you what your housing needs are and then we hook you up with a home stay or a camping spot. We have over 25 workshops confirmed which are all gonna be so great. Thanks to all the peops who are making that happen. The only thing we are a little lacking on is workshops for the Bike Bike 101 Day, Friday August 10th. So far we have Cali from the Grease Pit presenting on “?Keeping and Getting a Space” and also the Derailer Bicycle Collective facilitating a discussion about What I Wish I Had (or Had Not) Known When We Opened Shop. We really need people to facilitate other workshops including ***“Acquiring Bicycle Donations and Tools”- how to set up wholesale accounts, where else to get tools from, what tools are essential. Where to get bikes from, universities, the po-po, community bike drives, bike organizations, retail bike shops, Old men who have 60 in their garage, random people etc. ***“Intro to Bike coop programs” holding earn a bike programs for both adults and kids. Different models to get those bikes out of your shop and onto the street. ***“Intro to legal stuff” an overview of fiscal sponsorship, 501 c3, bike coop insurance etc. We are also open to other ideas for workshops that should go on the bike bike 101 day. Especially workshops suggested by those shops that are just starting up since yinz are the ones who we’re holding this day for. Heya BikeBike people I'm helping put together the anti-oppression workshop for BikeBike, and Adele, the facilitator has asked for some conversation topics. Here is the workshop description: Ally-building: Race, Gender, Class and Sexuality in the Biking Community This workshop is designed to increase cross-cultural communication skills and foster "ally-building" as a strategy for building relationships across differences. Participants will address the operations of race, gender, class and sexuality within the biking community through a variety of interactive exercises, including one- on-one and group discussions. The session likewise promotes self- reflection on privileged and oppressed group memberships while focusing on how to be an ally. Here's what I need from you: stories! Incidents that have occurred, problems you have encountered, challenges that have come up, and positive experiences too - around the topics or race, gender, class and sexuality.
