Hi Wade, everyone. I converted a 10x30ft shipping container for our solar powered workshop. Everything we create is open source, not had time/capacity to get the build online yet but happy to share how we built it/photos/etc. Essentially I built a timber frame inside with rockwool insulation, clad this with 18mm ply (9mm is adequate but I had to work with what I could get), fitted 6 x 250W solar panels on the roof and built a power unit incorporating an isolator switch, leading to a Victron Energy charge controlled to feed 2 x 100Ah Lead Crystal batteries in a vented secure workbench. All workbenches, toolboards built from same materials, surfaces on the main benches 3mm aluminium sheeting, dibond on two [upcycled building hoardings]. Hopefully you're able to get the word out to identify the guy in this post: https://twitter.com/VicStoddard/status/1268620623489560576 This scumbag was a spandie cyclist on the Capital Crescent Trail, riding near the Dalecarlia tunnel. He physically attacked two children who were posting George Floyd memorial flyers. Don't know much more about it. If this guy was from my town, I'd likely recognize his bike at least. As cyclists and mechanics, we're the people who'd be best at identifying one of our own. By "one of our own", I mean a cyclist, not a bigoted brute. ~cyclista Nicholas

current bike supply

Hi everyone, I've heard everywhere that bikes are in extremely short supply, especially because of an extremely high demand currently, and that this dynamic is even more pronounced due to tariffs imposed on China. Now obviously, this might spur domestic production of bicycles, which maybe could be awesome. But in the meantime, it isn't awesome - people can't get bikes. Those of us out there - maybe most of us - who deal primarily in used bikes, in the meantime *are* (or can be) that domestic production. I'm bringing this up in case anyone hasn't though of it all or really processed it yet, because I imagine everyone's local or even state governments are currently accepting proposals for various grants. At this time, collectively, we literally, physically are positioned to be major gatekeepers to possibly tens of thousands of people becoming cyclists or resuming cycling who otherwise wouldn't, when major retailers and various LBS have no ability to meet demand. This is also a huge opportunity to turn the general public on to the goodness and soundness of reused bikes. A lot of people think if it's old or used, it's diminished in some way. All of us know that isn't true, and now we have a greater ability than ever to prove the truth of this message. Here at Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles we've been running nonstop, though with a skeleton crew, since the virus hit, and reusing old bikes for ecological reasons has been one of our primary purposes for several decades. I'm sure most of you don't need it, but if anyone needs or wants pointers or advice, I'd be happy to help. Getting funding to pay mechanics or hire additional mechanics is probably the starting point. Survive, cyclistas!!! <3 ~cyclista Nicholas

Automating the shop

Hey all, We have developed a scheme to allow folks to schedule time with us in a safe and efficient way. We're currently fixing people's bikes for them after they drop their bike off, where we used to just give advice and lend a hand when needed. We also are offering test-rides by appointment. "Bike Month"

Happy May Day everyone! I'm curious if and how folks are deciding to participate in "Bike Month" this year, since most regular activities or events can't happy during the pandemic. Since we are usually busy busy running classes and open shop in our space, we have some extra time on our hands this season that could be used to celebrate, support and encourage cycling in other ways. *I'd love to hear if anyone has come up with ideas to engage people, specifically outside of your shop spaces.* I also understand that even just *continuing to exist* is keeping our hands full in many places, so I certainly don't expect most organizations have the time or energy (or funds) to think about "Bike Month". Hi all, The (Utah) Bicycle Collective closed on March 13th. Our mechanics worked in the shop with social distancing and hand washing measures (IF they felt comfortable coming to work). Our staff worked hard for 2 weeks to shift online and began taking bike and limited parts purchase by appointment only after those 2 weeks. Customers must browse our *online inventory and pick one bike to test ride. Then book a 20 minute time slot with us. In case the bike is not to their liking they must come with another in mind or we may pick out another that is their size for them. We do curbside service except for payment, then wipe down everything with sanitizer. All staff wear their air filter masks and gloves when interacting with customers. Only one at a time allowed in the shop to pay. We will begin taking repair services by appointment (curbside dropoff) at the end of this week - something we have never done before. We are normally a DIY shop. Our other programs and donations are closed. I've been working to engage volunteers online through community engagement and online workshop ideas. Or sanitizing outside before bringing inside. Having donors schedule an appointment for drop off. Ring doorbell and leave by door. If need a donation receipt they can call. Any safe practices or ideas for accepting clients who need a bicycle for transportation (we have a charitable program where they can for free or by volunteering 6 hours)? Latex would be better, likely, for against the skin~ except those that are allergic~ as well as being somewhat more usable. On the other hand, they would be more susceptible to breakage, as well as being harder to source for secondary use & more expensive in the beginning. (It is a rationale to using them, however.) They, also, deteriorate faster (in exposure to air). Though, more repairable. They are a natural product. Butyl rubber has an aroma. Yet, quite a good idea. Online curriculum for youth with STEM content

Hi All We are working on a series of online videos (COVIDeos) and courses for our community to continue to provide value during this strange time. We also want to create some online courses that youth could participate in while they are at home. We are thinking about something that involves STEM content about the physics and engineering behind the design of bikes ( or something like that) . It might involve a section about the parts of the bike and then go in depth about the various parts and why they are important to the overall function and efficiency of the bicycle. It would also involve a series of quizzes that youth could take about the content. Has anyone done anything like this? Hey folks So all this Covid-19/work from home whackiness has left me with some much needed admin time. Silver lining? I'm looking at revamping our staff reviews. I've attached what we used last year, which was great in lots of ways and a doc I want to continue to use. It's a goal-setting/self-review doc that I took the feedback from and worked performance feedback into. But I'm considering alternating years with a more traditional review process that measures folks' natural skillsets & personalities against their job descriptions and performance. Motorized Bicycle Diversion

Hello Think Tank. First, I want to say thanks for all the great threads I have read on this list serv. I rarely post anything but I do read most posts and I have gained lots of great perspectives, including the recent impacts of covid, from you all. Now, on to what might be a welcome diversion from the whole virus topic. We have a very small community bike shop on the south coast of Oregon and we are constantly approached about motorized bicycles in one form or another. We are looking for examples of how to deal with those interested in motorizing bicycles. I will say that after a couple of experiences with community members bringing their 'moto-bikes' in to the shop we have now taken the position that we do not provide assistance on those projects and don't want such bikes in our shop. They are contrary to our mission of non-petroleum based transportation. How do other longer established shops handle this? We frequently get people in to buy rear wheels or frames they can use for moto-bikes. Or they want to purchase one of the bikes our volunteers have spent hours restoring and convert it to a moto-bike. We are considering saying no to any support for moto-bikes but we also recognize that community members use them as an alternative to cars/motorcycles for important transportation needs - like commuting to work. Thanks for the lively conversation on how to ride the line between serving our community and doing our part not to spread covid-19. This is an unprecedented situation from all angles, so it's nice to have this group of like-minded folks from all over looking at things from this one. Here at Bikes for Humanity PDX we have postponed all classes, in-person programs, and open hours. We are doing bike adoptions on an appointment basis: (1) bikes are posted online for folks to browse, folks referred to us from partner organizations describe what they are looking for (2) a time is set 30 mins+ away from another appointment, and the adopter is asked if they'll need helmet, light, and/or lock. (3) We meet in the parking lot behind our space with a couple bike options, and any other items they might need. We feel this is a satisfactory means toward meeting the needs of people trying to access bikes as either a diversion or way to get to work, as well as our own needs of revenue and the fulfillment of our mission. Does anyone have insight on how to maximize social distancing and minimize shared contact of surfaces? I am also interested from a mechanical perspective, what the effect of watered down bleach is on grips, saddles, bar wrap. Since we only have so much rubbing alcohol, and it won't be easier to acquire anytime soon, we are looking for a way to ensure contact points are sterilized going forward. Spray bleach-water on grips and wipe with rag designated as the touch-points sanitizing rag? And since rubbing alcohol is now prioritized for non-bike purposes, what is another means of cleaning bearing systems, rims and disc rotors? Jeff- Our shop is a mess, too, and we'd like to clean up and get ready for Spring. But just to be clear -- as of late yesterday, Ohio has 5 _confirmed_ cases of COVID-19. That 100,000 figure is an estimate from the Ohio Department of Health as to how many folks in Ohio might currently be carrying the virus, based on statistically extrapolating a rate of community spread. Yes, it's serious, and we need to be taking aggressive steps, but keeping perspective is important. Hello all, The Sacramento Bike Kitchen would like to ramp up our educational offerings. The programs needs to be flexible yet structured and flexible to accommodate potential volunteer scheduling/availability fluctuations. I have been looking into the Park Tool Schools program as outlined in their BB-4TG Instructor Guide. I am impressed with their offering and feel it might fit our needs perfectly. We are thinking to first establish an in-house mechanic training course which could be mandatory for new volunteers and optional for current volunteer staff. We are 100% Volunteer run. We would then open it up to the public. Tuition if any has yet to be discussed. We would greatly appreciate any feed back from all of you if you have any experience with Park Tool School or similar curriculum. Secondly have any of you instituted a mandatory training for new volunteers? If so, any observations and reflections would be welcomed. Hi, In 2016, we crafted a long range, big picture vision when we took on the task of buying a 2 acre property with a 28,000 sq ft building in the heart of Missoula. (we raised the down payment outright with cash donations, then assembled 8 tenants to cover the mortgage) We had many pot lucks, round tables and one on one conversations. Whole Sale Accounts - JBI

Hey all, I've been chatting with a lead sales rep from JBI regarding the troubles some bike collectives have in securing whole sale accounts. He was super sympathetic and wanted to see how he could help smooth over the process. Any of you all needing help in this regard? Is this still an issue? Hi buds, I'm with Kickstand Community Bikes, a volunteer-run space in Vancouver, BC. We're in the midst of some big changes: a shop move, general increase in volunteer-time, and increase in shop user-ship. All good things, but we've decided that it's probably time for visioning meeting. However, it turns out folks have some different ideas about what this means. I have my own ideas, but I haven't participated in this sort of meeting before, so I'm not sure how to build a framework to make this exercise useful. Has anyone participated in a Visioning Meeting for their organization? What did it look like? Specifically, what was the scope and what were the goals? Who facilitated the meeting? How many people attended? What did you accomplish? If anyone has an agenda or outline they could share, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! Alysia

Transition to trusted volunteer

Dennis: I am with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange. We have an explicit conflict of interest policy designed to prevent volunteers at any level from profiting from their volunteer activities. Removing the incentive of personal financial gain helps to see that volunteers are taking more responsibility for the right reasons. Our shop leadership is mostly self-selected volunteers who show up at our steering committee meetings that happen every other month. From this additional time commitment and willingness to take action items it quickly becomes evident who is a committed and trusted volunteer. Responsible leaders are developed, not born. You should be taking steps to meet and get to know the volunteers to decide which ones you trust. Remember their names. Make them feel welcome, continually remind them of your shop’s goals and organizing principles. Invite them to incrementally assume more responsibility. I got drawn into a leadership role at my shop when I observed how hard our leader was working, and asked if there was something I could do to help share the burden.

Fence posts provide a frame to hang bikes vertically from hooks. The flat top deck is good for storage. The linked page contains designs for a number of different bike racks by various people. Transition to trusted volunteer

our organisation is having difficulty cultivating trusted volunteers. Our mission and circumstances is very appealling, so we attract many new volunteers, but we have a dearth of people transitioning to trusted volunteer status. Also, the allure of personal gain trends to attract problematic, opportunistic types, to the leadership position,although this may be a peculiarly Australian problem given our convict/colonist background. I understand that not everyone takes up the vocation, it is a choice with what one does with their spare time. What are the circumstances / structure that your organisation has to support your lead volunteers? On a personal note, what prompted to to take up the mantle of leadership? What keeps you doing it?
