Hi thinktankers. Don't worry, Toronto is still standing after the G20, though some of us are battered and bruised. We are indeed still looking forward to hosting our own [awesome, radical, subversive!] conference in the city. As of yesterday we are getting into Bike!Bike! organizing full-force. The following email was sent out to everyone who has registered so far, but I figured a lot of you are still putting it off. So here is a bit of info to entice you to get on over to the website and register. The website will also have a bunch of stuff updated over the next few days. Thanks! Ainsley. ------- Hello all! you are receiving this email because you have registered to attend Bike!Bike! 2010 in Toronto this coming August, or because we wished to invite you to attend. We are now trying to set up housing, bike lending, volunteers, and workshop schedules, with the hope of being able to communicate important information to you 1-2 weeks before the beginning of the conference (August 12th). If your plans have changed in any logistical way - i.e. if you do not intend to attend Bike!Bike! or if you will be here earlier/later, if you do/not need a bike or housing, please send us an email and let us know. We want to be prepared to facilitate everyone’s needs as best as we can. Also, if your shop is sending more than one representative (it is more fun in groups!), then let us know and we can add this to your profile, and try to match you up with housing. Please ensure that you are prepared and have proper documentation if you are crossing the border. If you are crossing the border by bicycle be sure to look into which crossings you can access. For reference, here is what the basic schedule is looking like. There will most likely be 4 workshops each session (1.5 hour period) for about 35 total. a few workshop will span two sessions (3 hours) where it is deemed appropriate. We know what the evening events will be but want to keep them secret for now ;) Basic Schedule Outline: Thursday: 12-6pm registration 4-7pm special shop hours for Bike!Bike! bike fix-ups 7-10pm ride and casual welcome dinner for those who have arrived. Friday: breakfast 8:30-9:30 Workshops 9:45-1:00 Lunch 1:00-2:00 Workshops 2:15-5:30 Event (tba) 8pm-12am Saturday breakfast 8:30-9:30 Workshops 9:45-1:00 Lunch 1:00-2:00 Workshops 2:15-5:30 (may end earlier for special event) Event (tba) 10pm-2am Sunday breakfast 8:30-9:30 workshop/final brainstorm 9:45-11:30 Closing meeting, Bike!Bike! 2011 discussion 11:45-1:30 goodbyes 2pm onward The conference will be occurring in two downtown neighbourhoods - at Bloor and Lansdowne where Bike Pirates and the Free Gallery are located, and at the central U of T campus where we will utilise a large green space, cooking facilities, a cafe, and the Bike Chain workshop. There will be a bike bus taking folks from one neighbourhood to the other between sessions, as well as signs at the 2 major intersections along the route, so as to minimize confusion or navigational stress. New Co-op, Needing Your Help

Hi everyone, I am currently working on putting together a proposal for a student run bike co-op at Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio. I am trying to get a handle on my proposed budget. I was hoping that some of you could provide me with a breakdown of your monthly costs or even just a list of your parts costs and other major costs per month. Also if you could share your membership numbers so I can compare them to the size of our campus. It would help so much if you could send me some information and really any advice for starting up a new co-op. Hope to hear from you all soon! Ashton

heres the details: I invite anyone who isnt busy this sunday at 7pm to come to the longhaul this Sunday June 20th, 3124 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley CA. 94705 1st part: Documentary film on a DIY bike collective and slide show: In Lyon France there is DIY bike workshop called « l'atelier vélo autogéré du chat perché » located in an old renault industrial vehical factory. It's a 900 square foot space with an adjacent indoor bike polo field. It's a bike freak's heaven for creating human powered vehicals. It's the garage for a fleet of cargo trikes and oversided trailers that gleem the city for dumpstered treasures. It's the launching point for the vélorution (french critical mass) and it hosts an annual bike festival called Mort Sauvage à Vélo. It's all this and more. Come see the slideshow and film presented by one of the founders who will be in Berkeley to show you the best of the workshop, it's creations with many how to photos and it's bike freaks in action. http://ateliervelo.free.fr/ http://velorutionlyon.free.fr/ 2nd part (non bike stuff) Slideshow on the Northwest Ecosystem Survey Team: NEST is an all-volunteer group of self-organizing, tree-climbing humans. They take on a role as canopy surveyors, who utilize the Northwest Forest Plan’s “Survey and Manage” laws to protect ancient forests threatened by clearcut logging. NEST formed out of the Fall Creek tree-sit in 1998, when several observant forest defenders noticed paid USFS surveyors walking transect lines and climbing trees. These paid surveyors were seeking the treetop nests of red tree voles. Unfortunately, their abstract survey protocol does not fully account for tree vole habitat, and it is not ideal for finding nests. Under Survey and Manage, each red tree vole nest documented was required to receive a 10-acre surrounding buffer where no logging could occur. Following a little research, the forest defenders realized just what needed to be done to do a much more thorough job, on their own. Since this time, NEST has found hundreds of Red Tree Vole nests in areas that were slated for logging. Thousands of acres of forest have been saved, as a result of NEST surveys.NEST has surveyed everywhere from the Illinois Valley of Southern Oregon, as far north as the Mt. Our primary program, Earn-a-Bike classes, teaches bike maintenance, repair, and safe, effective, riding skills. We also offer a summer day camp, educational programs, and advanced programs for earn-a-bike graduates and programs for adults. We also overhaul and sell bikes. Programs are held at several sites in Philadelphia and nearby. We seek a leader who is committed to youth development and bicycling and who is experienced in program management. The ED is responsible for overseeing programs and staff, maintaining financial and program records, fundraising (including grant-writing and contracting), cooperating with program partners, and representing NBW to the public.
