Bike!Bike! 2010 Dates

The Toronto team has finalized the dates for Bike!Bike! 2010: Thursday August 12 - Sunday August 15 (This includes a Friday the 13th so be prepared for a cursed event that night!) Our partners at the University of Toronto's Bike Chain ( http://bikechain.utoronto.ca/) are working to book space on campus, which will be amazing - beautiful, historic buildings, green space and centrally located. We are also thinking about a theme for this year. My vote is kittens. If you have a better idea please submit! We will keep you posted. Bike love! Pirates and Co.

B!KE: The Peterborough Community Bike Shop is a registered non-profit organization providing the knowledge, tools, parts and space for community members to learn bicycle maintenance and repair. B!KE is now accepting applications for a Director position. Job Title Community Bike Shop Executive Director Description The Director will manage B!KE’s ongoing programming, publicity, and administration; work with B!KE’s Board and community partners to coordinate long-term sustainability for the organization; and will facilitate special programming, including workshops, group rides, and events. Responsibilities Manage B!KE’s open workshop hours Teach bicycle maintenance and mechanics to B!KE’s members Run volunteer training and information sessions; manage volunteer labour Coordinate B!KE special events with community partners Represent B!KE in media and events Administrate the organization with sound financial management Grant writing and strategic planning to ensure long-term organizational sustainability Required Qualifications Strong, demonstrable expertise in bicycle mechanics and maintenance Related post-secondary degree or minimum two years experience working in business administration or management, preferably non-profit and/or involving volunteer management Demonstrated experience as a youth or adult educator Demonstrated commitment and experience in social justice concerns, through previous work or volunteerism. Knowledge of transportation politics and anti-poverty issues Grant writing experience CAN-BIKE, LCI, or equivalent cycling instructor certification is an asset. Abilities Demonstrated ability work creatively and productively without direct supervision Excellent strategic planning skills and creative vision, coupled with the ability to get things done on a day-to-day basis Strong interpersonal skills, sensitivity and tact when dealing with the public Ability to work comfortably and productively with a diverse team of volunteers Excellent computer & design skills are an asset Submission package Cover letter Resume Letter describing specifically how your education, skills and experience meet the qualifications and duties above. Bike!Bike! Info gathering (past and present)

As I mentioned before we are very lucky to have a volunteer who is getting a university course credit for her work on Bike!Bike! 2010. And she needs work to do as of NOW! Our goal is this: To set her up collecting data, info, numbers, stories, photos, and histories from the past organizers (and participants) of Bike!Bike! We would like to get in contact with any folks who were involved in the planning and facilitation of the conference. If you, or someone you know was involved please send us a contact (email and phone # if possible) and she will begin to get in touch with people. email kelly at happilyuseful(a)gmail.com She has been given a list of particular issues we would like to address (logistics, statistics) and will contact you with a bunch of questions. But there is no way we have thought of everything! If you have other info to share please send it along to her. We would also like to gather, in one place, all the physical mementos like invites, posters and city-maps that each city has produced. We have the last 3-years' posters and programs in our archive, but if you want to send us anything digital that would be even better. In the end we hope to have 2 things: an online archive and resource, like we've discussed here, that has useful info for those planning future conferences. not just stats but timelines/guidelines/budgets to compare. and a zine with Bike!Bike! info and history and pictures that we can distribute at this year's conference. So if you have anything to share please email Kelly and put something useful (i.e. bikebike2005 - budget) in the subject line so she can sort her email more easily :) Thanks! Ainsley and Kelly

liability

This has probably been discussed before, and it's probably on some bike collectives website... what is your bike shop's take on the issue of liability? like, if someone gets injured, either working in your shop, or possibly somehow because of a bike they have made or bought there. Or, some other form of liability. Any anecdotes? Advice? Horror stories? Especially Canada, which is where we are. Cheers. Dealing with intoxicated users

Hey Folks, Quick question: How do you deal tactfully/respectfully with users of your space who are visibly intoxicated or smell strongly of booze? It's our policy to not allow people to work in this state (for personal safety, amount of oversight required, and comfort levels for other users of the space). This policy, however, is never really enacted. I suppose we don't (I don't!) feel comfortable asking people when I suspect their intoxication may lead them to react abrasively. Any specific lines or strategies you use?
