First, I just want to say Happy Holidays and thank you for all you do. We wrapped up the year with 400 kids (many new to Boise from around the world) coming down to get bicycles during BBP's 10th Annual Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway. I know many of you have similar programs and have worked tremendously hard during 2016 to create positive change in your community. To that we say HECK YAH! I'm preparing our Annual Report and have put together a draft of a pledge / commitment / promise that BBP's Board and Staff plan to spread widely throughout our community in the New Year. The pledge is part of our Annual Employee Goal Handout (see attached). I thought I would share the pledge with everyone here as well. Perhaps you are making similar commitments to your community. Let me know if you have any thoughts, edits, recommendations, or would like to share your own. *A Pledge, A Promise, & A Commitment* It has always been part of BBP’s Mission to create an educational workspace in a diverse and non-threatening atmosphere. In what seems like a Historic time of uncertainty and division in our country, we are doubling down on that commitment. When you enter our doors, you are entering a place of love, empathy, and community. While inside you will be treated with the same amount of respect and regard as everyone you’re sharing the shop with. When you leave our building, we hope to send you with the tools and confidence to connect to your next opportunity on two wheels. We're about to finish a 2000sqft expansion to our facility and it is a very exciting and impactful time to be on BBP's team. Our Volunteer Coordinator from years past has gone on to become the Executive Director of Salt Lake City Bike Collective. We would love keep the networking going in the Bicycle Coop World. Hey all, See below for a callout for contributions for a cyclo-feminist zine. (français plus bas) The cyclo-feminist collective Les dérailleuses is looking for contributions for the volume two of its zine Londonderry. The theme: CYCLOTOURISM!!!! You have until January 10th 2017 to send us your essays, drawings, BDs, poems, photos (black/white) and others which expand on the theme of cyclotourism and feminism. Your contributions can be sent to: les.derailleuses(a)gmail.com Your essays must be between 1500 and 2000 characters long, spaces included. Please specify which name you’d like to be credited to in your email. If you are in need of ideas for your submissions, we have some for you! Of course, you don’t need to stick to this list, but we’d love to receive contributions about the following topics: * Cyclo-tourism and privilege * How to guides (ex. How to fix your bike on the road, which tools you need) or anecdotes of repairs on the road * Stories which include a map (ex. So I whipped this up... It's a largeish PDF, sorry for any inconvenience. It would take me probably another 2-3 hours to prep it for consistency and proper printing. It's just a template. This is a wordy example. For an actual brochure I would be looking to cut the word count and/or reduce font-size if I absolutely needed all that verbiage. I'm not sure how attachments work in this here list, but if you're having trouble shoot me a direct email and I'll send you the template in whatever form I can (PDF, .indd, whatever). Y'all are free to use it, though I'd have an actual graphic designer give it some polish/panache as well as an edit/revision by a copywriter before it went public, if you have either of those in the ranks of your organization, or can afford external services. I appreciate feedback of all kinds, so let me know what you think about it! Keep up the good work everybody! -Jude

Pay Scale in Community Bike Shops

Hi All, I have been asked by my board to set pay scales for positions here at B!KE. This process includes doing research on pay scales in comparable organizations. While I know that we all operate on different models in cities with very different costs of living, I would much appreciate having some numbers from organizations with similar mandates to put in to my recommendations. For context B!KE has: - 400+ members - 2 year round full-time staff, and 3+ part-time seasonal staff - 200 donated bikes a year - Core programs include Open Shop, Earn-A-Bike, Volunteer Training, In-School Programs, Workshops. Sales of refurbished bikes, new parts, and used parts. - 10 Years of operation - $115,000 Annual operating budget If you are open to sharing pay ranges for people in full-time positions within your organization that would be very helpful for me (especially if contextualize with some of the above bullets). We are particularly interested in the two following position types: Executive Director/Operations Manager and Program Coordinator/Head Mechanic.
