Hurricane Sandy and Bike Relief

Dear Community Bike Shops, Thank you so much to everyone from near and far who is helping to support efforts in the clean up and recovery of Hurricane Sandy and keeping us in your thoughts. In New York City, Recycle-A-Bicycle's own warehouse and job training center received 3 feet of water in the storm surge that came with the hurricane and caused an electrical fire in the building. Though we still have no heat at any of our locations, we are keeping our fingers warm by fixing up bikes for our partners and friends helping with <http://btaoregon.org/2012/11/support-relief-efforts-in-new-york/>hurricane relief <http://btaoregon.org/2012/11/support-relief-efforts-in-new-york/>. The recovery effort will take months if not years, and Recycle-A-Bicycle is actively helping in the recovery. Even now, most impacted locations have no heat, water, power and very little cell phone service. There is a severe gas shortage and bicycles can play an important role in delivering food, supplies, transportation and information. In Red Hook, Brooklyn right now bike messengers travelling from building to building are the primary way residents in the neighborhood are receiving information about where hot food and supplies are being distributed on a day to day basis. In our own way we are trying to make a contribution to our neighbors recover. This week we've delivered 8 bikes, racks and baskets to 2 neighborhoods for food and supply distribution. This Saturday, we'll be setting up a mobile bike shop in Red Hook. We've been actively talking to our partners about how to help and will continue to donate and repair bikes for organizations that need it. Bike share program

Hello, We are in the process of developing a bike share program on campus at Trent University for next spring. I was wondering if anyone has any insight, words of wisdom or suggestions for running such a program, especially on a university campus. Are there other similar programs that I can borrow ideas from? Links to resources on the subject would also be helpful. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Is your shop OSHA Compliant?

Hey All, I just went to a day long seminar on Human Resources where they spent some time talking about OSHA. From what they said at the seminar OSHA can come in at any time and audit your shop. Apparently if they find violations they can fine the shit out of you. Here are some things I learned and remember this was 20mins of a day long seminar, there are week long classes on this stuff. This is a very short list. - All chemicals and solvents should have warning labels on them clearly stating what's in them in *multiple languages* - You should not keep aspirin, ibuprofen, neosporin or any other pharmaceuticals that someone could potentially have a reaction to in your medicine cabinet* * - Exit signs should be on all doors. - There should be no trip hazards. - Your staff needs to go through trainings on such things as how to use a ladder. This list is nowhere close to comprehensive but I'm going to be looking into this more in the coming weeks and months. We've been around for almost seven years now never had a serious accident and I want to keep it that way. What are you guys doing to keep your shops safe and maybe even OSHA compliant? Bike Bike WInter in Feb 15...Toronto?

I would like to ask a formal question ? Would anyone be interested in attending a bike conference in Feb 15th in Toronto Canada that consists of educational workshops, forums, and discussions on topics ranging from wheel building, consensus decision-making, gender dynamics, and of course, how to make a community bike space and cyclists survive through winter. All workshops will be presented and facilitated by attendees. *Please reply with interest so we can gauge interest.*

Assembling List of Student/University Bike Collectives and Advocacy Groups

Hello Think Tank, I am assembling a list of student/university bike collectives and advocacy groups, hoping that by organizing and learning from each other and from outside experts, we can multiply our efforts to increase bicycle use. Does anyone know of any bicycling-related student groups, or individual students with an interest in bicycle advocacy? Storing Bikes near a Pipe Organ

Okay, this is an odd one, but I'll ask it anyway: Anyone have experience storing bikes near a pipe organ and if so, do the bikes make any noise due to the vibration? I ask b/c we're considering working with a local church to give away a bunch of little kid bikes around the holidays. The pastor says I can store them in the choir loft until the event in December, but the choir director has concerns that they'll make noise (i.e. vibrating spokes) because they'll literally be right next to the huge pipe organ. I suppose it's possible, but told them I honestly didn't know and would check in with this astute body to see if anyone has first hand knowledge of a situation like this.
