Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. NY Mechanical Gardens FIRST WORKSHOP!

Hello from Brooklyn! It's been a busy season trying to get our coop off the ground, including some setbacks over the recent months, but last night marked a real milestone for us: *We had our first real workshop, in a space that might become our regular home!* The backstory is that a local women's cycling group let me know they were prepping for a big upcoming ride that was going to be a real challenge for them. We pitched staging an event so that their people could have access to a well-staffed open workshop where we could help them head off problems and feel more empowered about their bikes. AND we pitched it to a church space that looks like they're going to invite us to move in and treat it as our home. AND, it was a smashing success. We publicized through a few channels, mostly women's cycling groups, and got a really great turnout from minute 1 right through to the end. People had a ball. Mechanical Gardens volunteers did great with putting the tools in the riders' hands. Lots of bikes got fixed. Great diversity in the crowd. Watermelon got eaten. It was pretty much just perfect. It was also the first real moment of life for New York City's first-ever bike coop. And it was the first moment that this dream I've had of starting a coop here -- a dream you all made me feel was possible -- has actually seemed like it might really be coming true. Last night was a definitive milestone for us, and I'm dedicating it to you all. Often our students will report that their bikes have been lost or stolen within several months of their earning them. Has anyone implemented any shop procedures that work well to track the bikes that leave their shop, or otherwise to prevent/deter thefts, especially for young people? B!KE offers a combo lock with each earned bicycle and in our last Earn-A-Bike session we specifically teach how to lock a bike. Many youth do still trade, or sometimes sell, their bicycles. Our official policy is that you can't earn another bike for one year. Hi All! Interbike's way, way around the corner, September 14th-18th with the Outdoor Demo the two days before. As you probably know, the industry's dog-and-pony show is a great environment for Collectives to meet retailers and shop owners and let them know about all the great ways to get involved with what we do on a local and national level. Last year we didn't get a ticket confirmation until the LAST MINUTE, which was annoying, so I wanted to reach out to the network early this year with two things. 1. Would you like to go and get a (free) ticket through us? 2. What resources should we bring to bear and share with the cycling industry? If you'd like to go, sign up on this sheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ryv4e0wSR21-9LXoMRrLxjHbG6eafAzTmg4…> and fill out the relevant tabs. Youth Leadership Expectations

Hello all! You have all been so helpful in the past regarding our questions about rebuilding our youth programs, and now I ask to lean on your collective experience yet again. Our current questions are: 1. How do you determine the expectations, benefits, boundaries, & consequences of disrespecting those boundaries for youth in your space? For example, in a classroom we might involve all participants in creating a contract together, but in a fluctuating space, where people come and go daily, what is an effective way to have common guidelines that does not disempower youth? 2. Does your organization have a Youth Leadership Program? If so... - How does a young person become involved in leadership? - Has your program changed/grown as it has become more established? What has that journey been like? - Does your program have additional expectations for youth designated as leaders? (i.e. Do they have extra privileges and responsibilities? What kinds of behaviors might put their leadership status in jeopardy?) And last but certainly not least... - *Do standards for their behavior extend beyond the walls of your building? (i.e. Must they be enrolled in school? What if they are seen fighting, bullying, or riding dangerously out in the community? etc.)* Thank you in advance for any/all wisdom you can offer. I'm thinking about including a page that gives tips and maybe an outline for attendees writing workshop proposals for this year's Bike!Bike!. Does anyone feel that this might be a particularly bad idea? Otherwise, a discussion here on good and bad practices, examples of well written workshop descriptions, or examples of things you have found confusing about the process would be super useful but it would be great if I could also find a volunteer to help write the doc.
