Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. hey all, i'm looking to get in touch with the person who wrote/published the "no boys allowed" zine which was passed out at bikebike in san francisco. it was part of one of the oppression and gender identity issues workshops. we're looking to start a women's night here at community cycles, and i'd like to scan my copy as a pdf and email it to potential volunteers, as well as make some copies to have in the shop... if you're on the list, or if you know the person who wrote it (her name escapes me), please get in touch with me off list... thanks! josh. community cycles boulder

Advice on laying out new premises.

We are moving our workshop from 2 single garages in a city council owned compound to a larger tin shed on the other side of the yard. Size is around 12 metres(40') x 8 metres (26.5') with a 3 metre (10') sliding door two thirds of the way along the longer wall leading out on to an asphalt compound. We have ideas on how we would like to set it up for the maximum amount of usable workspace and storage but it would be great to have any pictures and plans of how other workshops have set up their operations, specifically those of a similar size. We also welcome ideas on what works well and what mistakes others have made paritcularly in regard to storage and work stations. To give you an idea of our activities which are relevant to the layout. We recycle bikes with volunteers who are all adults, sell some and donate others. We also run 6 week maintenance classes. We occasionally have school excursions attend. Except for cheap rent from council we are totally self supporting from bike sales and classes. Please post your ideas. Ride needed to BikeBike and back from Chicago

Hello everyone, I have a friend who wants to attend BikeBike in Winnipeg in August. My friend is very active in community biking and has been "under the weather" for quite a while and is experiencing some difficulty in financially. I'm looking for someone who will be driving from Chicago to Winnipeg and is willing to take my friend, this person is very affable and outgoing. I will pick up the expenses in order for this person to attend. I will be attending, however I will be taking Amtrak to Fargo,ND and continuing the ride via bike. Hi Geoff I've just setup new premises in a self-converted 30ft x 10ft shipping container in the Olympic Park, London, UK. I visited Condor Cycles, Cloud 9 Cycles, Soho Cycles and a few others that are deemed the best of the best in London to ask if I could photo their workshops and get advice. All were very helpful and because my business runs on a gift economy and open source, all were happy for me to photo their workshops and talk me through what worked and why. What I found: * vertical storage (if safe and you have height) good * keeping only what is needed most to hand, the rest further away (minimal movement wasted) * dedicated bench/toolboard for facing/setting tools with a grinding wheel (if possible) and heavy bench vice * lots of space needed to store completed bikes/bikes awaiting service? Make a scaffolding rail & use meathooks - slide the bikes like clothes on a clothing rail! * double-sided stands are brilliant for frame swapouts and saving space (if you have the width) * paint benches and tool/shadowboards black - easy to find tools, looks good, stays looking good even when dirty * PVC piping with angle bend is a great way of storing cable inners! What I also did * long shipping containers are dark - I installed a 2.5kW solar system on the roof for internal LED spots and striplights - make sure benches are well lit and lit in a way as to avoid glare * I didn't have budget for proper storage and benches so bought cheap 2nd hand stackable plastic storage bin boxes and built benches from plywood to exactly fit these (with 1/2" gap around each) * Benches with tops deeper than the bench width means you can get your feet right up to the bench * Used a few interior design tricks to make the space appear bigger - racks/storage mounted off the floor - white wherever possible (especially ceiling)....would have uplighters too if more power (our projects runs off-grid) Other thoughts * sliding doors? use this space for your safety posters and legal stuff (we need HSE posters, fire safety and company documentation displayed in UK) - or more storage if sliding mechanism can cope * ensure there is adequate space to move around - a good rule of thumb is 60cm-70cm gap * have a mix of new and parts used by volunteers/staff? colour code storage bins/boxes - one for old, one for new * easy clean/non-slip flooring is a worthy investment * parts washer great if you have chance to get one Warmest regards, *Lawrence Mohammed* Director/Head Mechanic *+44 (0)77 222 58587* *probikeservice.co.uk <https://probikeservice.co.uk>* *facebook.com/probikeservice <https://www.facebook.com/professionalbikeservice>* /[Location, NOT delivery address] Pro Bike Service C.I.C. The UDOT region covering St. George is known for spending more on bicycle infrastructure than any other region in Utah. And it's less than a 2 hour drive to Las Vegas, for what that's worth. This position is best suited to a candidate who works well with minimal direct supervision and who seeks an interesting challenge with freedom to carry out creative solutions to unforseeable challenges. Support will be available 24/7 from myself, many mentors, and local contacts, but with 4 hours of freeway between SLC and St. George, the Location Director will be working in something of an island.
