Fwd: We want your opinion - on live radio...
by bike talk 29 Dec '09

29 Dec '09

Hey Spokes Folks, It's Jim C. here, and I'm writing to invite, no, to convince you to be heard - and not just by the online Bike Talk group this week. This coming Tuesday, December 29th, Bike Talk will get its first live broadcast show on KPFK, 90.7 FM from 11PM til midnight Pacific Time - you can check them out here <http://www.kpfk.org/>. Who listens to the radio these days? Well, you might be surprised. KPFK is a groundbreaking Pacifica station that broadcasts many great shows including my personal favorite, 'Democracy Now!' - here<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KPFK>is a link to the KPFK wikipedia page. KPFK is considered a progressive radio station that leans a little farther left than other media stations. OK, so now you know the setup. How can you help? We'll be talking about most things bike, starting with a brief synopsis of bike-friendliness in cities by author Jeff Mapes (Pedaling Revolution<http://www.powells.com/biblio?isbn=0870714198&PID=33501>), and followed by a short critique of bike-friendliness in LA and what the city is doing to address cyclists' issues with its proposed Bicycle Master Plan. This is where we need you to call in - (818) 985-5735. What would you like to see improved in our city? Most of the listeners of this show will probably be driving in their automobiles. We want to bridge the gap between drivers and cyclists, so let's talk about what we want to see, not what we battle. We should save the fight for the next show - our focus with this show is to celebrate the bicycle and how it improves the quality of our lives. So call in and address the Bicycle Master Plan - (818) 985-5735, and tell us your ideas for improving cycling in our city. We'll be following up these segments with some bicycle culture, a year-end review from Streetsblog <http://la.streetsblog.org/>'s Damien Newton, calendar and news, and hopefully, some bicycle back story combined with clips from our interview with Richard Schwinn. We can't wait to hear from YOU! -Jim C Bike Talk! <http://archive.kpfk.org/parchive/index.php?shokey=biketalk> and Orange 20 Bikes <http://orange20bikes.com> -- please let us know if you want to be taken off this list. Hear Bike Talk! live on www.killradio.org, 10am-noon Saturdays. Call in at (213) 252-0998. Hear the podcast at kpfk.org: http://www.kpfk.org/programs/170-bike-talk.html See what's new with us at www.biketalk.us Follow us at bike_talk_kpfk on twitter.com

New Year!
by Ainsley Naylor 28 Dec '09

28 Dec '09

Hey all, Really I just want to see the subject change, so I'd like to see folks throw out some ideas of wishes, dreams, plans and schemes they are hoping for in the new year. We at Pirates have a few - it always seems hard to implement drastic changes, so the new year seems a good excuse. Here's some things on our list: Changing our locks. there have been a number of key-holders who have come and gone, and we never changed the locks when we first moved into our building. Better security and a better system of designating key-holders is a top priority. Tracking sales. right now all of our cash just goes into the donation box, and not all new parts are *necessarily* paid for in full. We need to ensure we charge for all new items as well as (gulp) starting to charge all applicable taxes and track these sales! Do our taxes for the first time!!! Volunteer training. Right now we just have an orientation to introduce people to the space. We would like to have some basic training, including some anti-o/sensitivity and some way of designating who is a volunteer and who is a participant in the space. Any suggestions or input on the best way to implement any of these changes would be most appreciated. What are your goals for the new year? Ainsley and The Pirates.

You rock, thinktank
by Clifford McCarten 18 Dec '09

Happy holidays, thinktank. What I like about you: It's a real pleasure feeling connected to the world. The internet, for me, fails a lot in this regard. But the listserv action is so human and humane, so sincere and useful. It was a wonderful discovery about two years ago to come upon an active discussion of everything we were facing and more, like a light in the darkness! Merci, merci. I hope you all have an excellent new year, as people and organizations. bikebikene on blog
by andrew lynn 16 Dec '09

hi all, i am a bikeblogger for the local paper here and upon realizing that it was my turn (!) this morning, i turned to blogging a bit about bikebike to the general public and here it is... http://blog.timesunion.com/bike/bike-bikes-all-around/693/ it is really not as thought out as my previous posts, which you can see here: http://blog.timesunion.com/bike/category/bloggers/andrew-lynn/ but i dropped some other shop links and thought the thinktank might enjoy. feel free to comment, as a lot of the blog has turned out to be about racing and stuff and pretty hyper local. good to get some outside voices if you desire. over and out andrew TBR -- andrew lynn | 518-573-7947 | troy, ny digital media | bike repair | tree work http://www.breathingplanet.net http://www.troybikerescue.org http://www.mediasanctuary.org http://flickr.com/photos/breathingplanet
