shop space design advice

Hi. Sorry I've been a stranger on this list as of late. But Here at Recycle-a-Bike in Providence, RI, we're working on a design of a new home for our program. I've teamed with an interior architecture grad student and an architecture grad student at a local design school who are awesome and excited about the project. We have a small plot of land set aside for it, and we will be designing and building our new home from the ground up. So we are starting our research, and I'm putting the question out to the list - Do folks have design examples of their shops to share? or insights as to what works and what doesn't in the usage of your shops? Any other thoughts about design / construction? I've taken a look at Austin Yellow Bike's new space<http://www.austinyellowbike.org/webberville_shop_images.htm>on their website and the "shop organization<http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Shop_Organization>" page on the Bike Collective Wiki, both of which were helpful, but what would be useful for us at this point is more thinking on the whole building scale. If people have info to contribute, I'd suggest putting it on said shop organization<http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Shop_Organization> page on the Bike Collective Wiki so that it's there for everyone to refer to. Proposal: BCN T-shirt Fundraiser

What if the Bike Collective Network (BCN) sold/distributed t-shirts and other schwag from community bicycle organizations? The website, www.bikecollectives.org, doesn't have much overhead, a little donated time and a little money for hosting and the domain name, which hopefully means there would be money left over for... 1) Individual organizations, whereas the BCN only takes out the minimal overhead charges and sends the rest to the organization who submitted that t-shirt design. 2) Bike!Bike!, whereas all the organizations submit their t-shirt designs, and they are printed as needed, proceeds cover the minimal overhead charges and the rest goes to bikebike related costs. If this were to happen we would need to establish an open and fair committee to review requests for funding, fund allocation, and follow-ups. Where did they idea come from? 1) Recently we have had other collectives come by SLC and check out our shop and were excited to buy our shirts. Every time I go to another shop I buy their shirt -- so why not make this process easier? 2) Thanks to an artist named Mike Haring, I think the Bike Collective Network (BCN)'s Bonzai Bike Tree logo is pretty cool and belongs on a shirt. best use for unwanted knobby tires

As others have experienced, we (Toledo Ohio Bike Co-op) have accumulated unwanted knobby tires (typically 26x2.0) that we don't often give/reccommend for bikers in our all-flat-pavement city. Has anyone on the list looked at the best options for getting these to someone who can really use them? Is there any $ense in $hipping them to another group who will include them with a shipment to our third world brothers and sisters? Thanks, Andy-in-Toledo

Would some one in the LasVegas area loan me a bicycle ? any old beater bike would do. Visiting from Michigan for one week, I dont know what i would do sans bike is there a rental? i have lock., and am exp wrench.

Hot Tip: Cheap "Fixtures" for your shop.

Mervyn's (www.mervyns.com) is going out of business, so they are getting rid of everything. Everything includes glass display cases that lock, clothing racks, slot wall, hooks, display fixtures and every type of sign imaginable. We took advantage of this in Salt Lake. The Salt Lake Mervyn's is being taken over by Kohl's (www.kohls.com) which will probably gut the place and put in their own fixtures. So we are going to contact Kohl's and see what they are going to throw out (like glass display cases). Everything that isn't bolted down is going to the dump before that. So... Companies that are going out of business will hire "liquidators" but the reality is the rest of the staff is counting down to their last day. So if you catch them when the liquidators aren't around -- they are more apt to just say "just take it, I am going to lose my job anyway." If the liquidator is around, make sure you have your best bartering volunteer there. Chances are the company is already in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so they have enough capital loses to write off -- they don't need or want your tax write off. Which means you need to meet them half way, buy something, and ask them to throw something else in for free. Not sure if your org should do it? Last summer the economy was peaking and so were gas prices. This summer the economy has dropped and so have gas prices. Everything being relative, expect a similar demand this coming summer on your community bike shop. So investing in your shop now is wise, you fill a need and as a result you are one of those in-high demand service that people will support. Knobby tires

One way to use some of the tires, even punctured tubes, is to make wallets out of them. Don't laugh - a sewing machine and a pop rivet gun can create some fairly nifty money holders. Check out www.instructables.com and search for "wallet." They have some great plans and these could be tailored to sell at a collective or through some of the bike shops in your area with proceeds going to support the cause.
