Mental health and Volunteering

We have a regular volunteer with a number of diagnosed mental health issues. When helping people he is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and friendly but gets carried away quite often and sometimes has strange ideas or ways of doing things. A while back I overheard him tell someone not to adjust their axle nuts during the month of August because the metal is too malleable then. I'm sure the person who was told this knew not to take it as reliable advice. The real problem is that he generally takes 1-2 hours to help someone patch a flat because he is so detailed and has so many rituals (cleaning the tire and rim bead with a soapy tooth brush). Other repairs are similar and often spiral out of control (while removing a tire he notices a slightly bent derailleur, and soon the derailleur and chain are removed to be straightened and rigorously cleaned even though the patron had no problems with shifting) Often this ends with frustration or on occasion results in a meltdown. I've had multiple direct discussions with him about 'how not to help people' (Don't take over their project, don't impose your ideas, there may be more than one right way to patch a flat) but this had had a limited effect. Does anyone have constructive advice to offer or experience from similar situations.

New Shop Set-up

Hi all, We are a new bicycle outreach and just acquired a new space! The space we've been given is one oversized garage bay with shelves on two sides, plywood wall on the third side and obviously the garage door on the last side. There are also 2x4 exposed rafters. Accounting for sales of donated bikes

People give us bikes, and we sell them. This is our main income. Should we be treating this/reporting this as related business income or as a donation (realized FMV of an in-kind donation)? What do you guys do? We have a fiscal agent. Let's say the answer does not affect their public support test.

WNBR dc?

Years past, now about 6 years, dc had wnbr (world naked bike ride), and as a capital of the supposedly free world, art lovers, bike lovers and just some different is not deficient bikers and media plus gawkers seemed to show up. Iirc from some backup paperwork handed me, a permit might be required for use of a park for setup (read dress down and media time) then almost CritMass like wandering the streets along the probably legally prescribed parade like route, while police and others hassle you to stay single file, just because, etc... Around art galleries were the kewlest, the white house and capital mixed results, but stops for photo ops. That said legal and other advocates may consider the startup opportunities and legal and social promises of that type of advocacy. Being now very warm outside, even without threats of global warming, and Chicago and other places having their acts together, I'd be remiss not to mention it. Hi Guys, I am a new subscriber to this list from France. I participate in a student bike co-op in Lyon ( we call them "atelier velo associatif et solidaire") and just discovered that the american network was allready well-structured. In France we have a similar network: association => https://www.heureux-cyclage.org/ (about 120 co-ops) wiki => https://www.heureux-cyclage.org/ and map: https://www.heureux-cyclage.org/ When I found the Bike collectives website I noticed that none of the american workshops was on our map and vice-versa, maybe it is time that we all work together :) I am really interested about BikeBike but Guadalajara is a bit expensive to reach from the old continent ! Donation Boxes!

Hello again folks, I'm wondering if anyone has tips or suggestions on how to improve donation box revenue. We just have a simple box with some boring laminated signage, and I'm wondering if anyone has eyecatching, creative, or clever ways of getting members to actually stop, think, and donate a little more often? We have a $5 lifetime membership, and parts are largely by donation, but the box itself goes largely unused, and our volunteers and members end up putting it in the cash box more often than the actual donation box Let me know, send photos, whatever you wish!
