Just an update on what's going on with the archives. The archives are still down and there's no ETA on when they will be back up again. youth and parents/guardians

Hello awesome Think-Tankers, Quick question here from the BF Community Bike Project. A large percentage of the people we work with are at-risk youth in our community. A lot of these youth tend to be under the age of 18, and a good chunk of them are under the age of 14 (down to the age of 8). We're wondering about how strict we should be about allowing youth in here without parents/guardians? We don't want to turn youth away, and we require youth to get waivers signed by their parents... but we also don't want to be liable for anything that could go wrong with having a few young youth running around our premises, youth that aren't part of any specific program we offer. Any thoughts/words of wisdom? Spanish & Tagalog resources please!

Hey folks, I know this request comes across the listserv from time to time, so sorry for not keeping better track of this topic. I'm working on a project with migrant agricultural workers in British Columbia this summer and I'm looking for reproducible Spanish and Tagalog how-to zines, handouts etc. We've got a good multilingual bicycle anatomy diagram that works well for us. I'm interested in anything you wanna send my way, but I'd be particularly interested in guides to patching flats, riding safely, and anything you've found useful for working with migrant workers/migrant agricultural workers more generally. Mandatory bicycle registration systems-- how to transfer ownership of donated bikes?

Do any of you have to deal with government paperwork for transferring bicycle ownership when repairing or reselling donated bikes? Does anyone else but Hawaii have such a system? If I don't hear from anyone I'll assume it is a system unique to Hawaii. The system is: Mandatory $15 onetime registration fee/tax, if your bike doesn't have a yellow registration sticker on it, police can impound it and give you a $50 ticket. You can get your bike back by paying the $15 tax later. It is really only enforced on homeless people. There are many unregistered bikes around--newcomers and tourists and even long time residents are not complying with the system. To transfer ownership it is $5 and more paperwork. Basically they've been treating bikes like mopeds for many years now. I'm hoping we can do away with that system, and shift to a free registration system like bikeindex.org. We'll see. However, a significant local bike organization, HBL.org, gets funds from the tax for education programs. Thanks for listening! Dear fellow subscribers, My name is Marcilla Smith, and I am the Communications Coordinator for the Durham Bicycle Co-operative. We are a 501(c)3 community bike project in Durham, NC, USA founded in 2007. I am writing today to make a first posting introduction, and to ask a question. Earlier this month, the City of Durham agreed to lease our co-op some unused property from the city's parks department. Until this happened, I have been unaware of any bike co-ops that operate on government land. All others with which I am familiar either own the land or lease from a private owner. Summer Girls Bike Job

Hi All! I am volunteering with the West End House Girls Camp located in Parsonsfield, Maine to start a bicycling program! The West End House Girls Camp is a 501c3 summer camp for girls aged 7-17 whose mission is to give any girl the opportunity to go to camp regardless of financial means. Their campers are amazing! The bike program will focus on riding and basic bike maintenance skills this year. For the program, we have received donated bikes and tools. Now we just need a staff member with the right experience and a passion for teaching girls how to bike! The West End House Girls Camp has a camp counselor position available (June-August) for a woman who has experience working with youth (diverse youth a plus), biking, and bike maintenance. Copywriting for Bike!Bike!?

Hey, is anyone interested in doing a bit of copywriting for the Bike!Bike! website? The folks in Guadalajara will be taking care of a lot of it but I'm looking at adding a more extensive and generalized about page plus a few minor sections on other pages. If anyone is interested in doing some writing or reviewing afterwards I'd be grateful. On a similar note, we'll be translating the site into Spanish this year and I already have volunteers to help with that, but if you're interested in translating into other languages please talk to me. French and then German are probably our next biggest targets, but I would need some commitment as content will need to be updated if anything changes in the future. The PM collaborates with the Shop Manager, Volunteer Outreach Membership Manager (VOMM), and Board to fulfill the goals outlined in our strategic thoughts and interacts extensively with kids, parents, and other community members. The PM works part-time in the shop to refurbish, repair and/or sell bicycles under the direction of the Shop Manager. Qualifications: - Enthusiastic personality that inspires people, especially youth, to participate in cycling programs - Bicycle mechanic skills and experience, preferably as a certified Bike Mechanic - Ability to design and implement creative programs/curricula, write grant applications, and create reports - Must be able to work most Saturdays Salary: $1,440 per month starting 5/1/15, and then $1,800 per month, with a minimum expectation of working 30 hrs per week. Benefits: - 10 days paid vacation/yr, accrued at 1 day per month starting 8/1/15 - 7 days sick leave/yr, accrued at 1 day per month starting 8/1/15 - 5 days paid Holidays/yr - 1 week paid leave for training/continuing education, with Board approval - $1000 for education/training - leave without pay with Board approval - wholesale pricing + sales tax for bike parts - One whole free bike per year using used parts with staff consent. Manages programs (30%) - Including Earn-a-Bike, Volunteer Repair Parties (VRPs), Community Shop Day, Summer Camps, Mountain Bike Teams, Adult Repair Classes and Partnerships, and future programs - Monitors student recruitment, registration, scholarships and fee collection - Manages Killer Goldfish and Killer Guppy bike teams (ages 10-14) - Leads bike rides with Bike School program, bike team, and other program rides - Manages grant program requirements, including reports as needed - Collaborates with shop manager and staff for all shop based programs - Supervises volunteer mechanics working at the shop on Saturdays 3.Performs bicycle repair, maintenance, and other services (30%) - Works in bike shop one weekday and most Community Shop Saturdays - Communicates diagnosis and estimates clearly and thoroughly with customers - Delivers professional level repairs within budget restraints - Reports estimates and work completed to customers and/or staff by reviewing repair tags - Reconditions/overhauls used bicycles of all types and conditions for resale - Repairs bikes to yield a safe, fully functional, and clean product. 4. Ensures risk management process is comprehensive & adequate for ReCyclery Programs(10%) - Oversees, guides and supports risk management policies and procedures - initiates and educates about safety protocol for volunteer coaches and riders - Creates and updates risk management policies and guidelines as needed - Ensures program compliance with insurance policy requirements - Ensures compliance amongst staff and volunteers with following Incident report protocol - Creates risk management scenarios and ways to test the system as needed - Works with VOMM to Design and maintain volunteer management policies & background checks for volunteers 5.
