Anyone out there have a good program (online) for managing staff + volunteer sign up for slots. We do not use waivers--our insurance company does not pressure us to because they do not stand up in court. Personally, I also feel they are quite problematic because they make people believe they do not have rights when they actually do. It is the legal equivalent of gas lighting. Here in Canada we are a lot less litigious than folks in the US so I think its also seen as less of an issue. We do have Directors and Officers insurance. Its pretty affordable for the protections it offers. Our insurance for liability and D&O is around $2,500 annually. Two questions for y'all along the insurance thread: How did you determine that your insurance *does* indeed cover DIY repairs? Seems like a lot of legalese in our General Liability Insurance that is pretty incomprehensible. Also, for those with a Board, do you have Directors & Officers Insurance? When our shop suspended DIY repair to patrons as a result of the lockdowns, I checked to see that our insurance covered not only DIY repairs but also staff-made repairs and it does. Our liability has never been challenged, though I wouldn't mind paring down our waiver, too. I've attached ours and am interested in seeing others. Hi Aaron, not sure what it's like Stateside, but in the UK, I'm pretty sure insurance is essential even if just recommending repairs and alterations to people working on their own bikes, not just providing these yourselves. There are ways to get around insurance but it's usually frowned upon from what I gather. Whilst many insurers here can offer coverage, a few (such as Butterworth Spengler) specialise in cycling and can thus provide comprehensive quotes, are familiar with risks and if anything does go wrong, they're probably better placed to support. We offer popup-servicing to local corporate clients as well as training and servicing in our workshop within a gift economy (essentially on a 'pay what you can' basis) and we need a minimum of £5Million Public Liability and Products insurance for this. I hand built our premises, turning a shipping container into a solar powered, insulated timber framed workshop and due to this, I think we pay a bit more (it's pretty odd and anything odd = uncertainty = risk = ££ / $$ it seems). Also, because it's in a high risk area. We have very comprehensive Risk Assessments, Method Statements and loads of policies - but this doesn't seem to have dropped out insurance premium...useful though ;) Not sure whether this info is helpful but do message me if I can be of assistance. Insurance for Collectives Offering Repair Services

Hey Bike-tankers, Many collectives seem to be offering repair services during Covid-times to help keep the lights on. Some non-profit shops have been offering repair services <https://freewheelbikes.org/service-and-repair/> for a while. There has been some mention of repair liability insurance and I would like to know more. Our shop is considering offering repair services, and I am wondering...Is it a good idea? Do we need insurance? Where can we find insurance? How much does it cost? Those types of things... Thanks in advance! Aaron

Hey all, I've got a question about the hanging of bikes on the rail. Did you use box rail hangers or some other unique setup? All I can see are big washers and a hook. Thanks! Hi Dennis, We run an Earn-a-Bike programme at the Bristol Bike Project so I might be able to help out. What exactly do you need and what is it for? Are you looking to set one up? I could forward our annual impact report if it's helpful. We manage to run our programme without funding because we use donated bikes and secondhand parts, volunteer time, and charge £20 at the end for a lock and lights, which covers our costs. Of course if you wanted to do the whole thing for free then you would need some funding but we don't have any funding docs that would be useful. Let me know if you'd like to discuss more. Hi. I run an in school Earn-A-Bike and open workshop program in Lowell, Massachusetts. All schools in Massachusetts, including the Lowell Public Schools, are closed for the remainder of the school year. Schools are moving to remote learning plans. How to adapt? What are your suggestions on creating remote learning programs and activities that engage students in cycling during the summer months (and possibly during the next school year)? Some students have access to bikes. Some do not. For students that do have bikes, many of their bikes are in disrepair. I'm sitting on a sizable inventory of donated bicycles that need refurbishment. Hey bike folks, I'm working adapting our bike ed course to a remote learning format, and want to tap into the thinktank hive-mind. Does anyone have a link to a good video of someone crashing via and 'endo'? Ideally it would be shot from the side, have clear footage, and not to gruesome (though I can edit knarly bits out). I'm looking for something to accompany an explanation of inertia, and act as an intro to an emergency braking lesson. Like I see many shops have done, we're taking some much needed time to rethink things that weren't working in our shop while we're closed to the public. Arizona's Covid-19 numbers aren't quite what we need them to be to reopen safely. So....cranksets!? We've gone back and forth between pegboard and milkcrate storage. I would love to hear other suggestions for storing these unwieldy beasts! Maybe even some photos? Please and thank you! That which has value is valuable, though resources and availability to pay differs, especially in times of great uncertainty and instability. What would be useful would be transparency of the costs involved, knowledge that everything created and built is, and stays within, the public domain for public benefit (if that's the intention?), a sliding scale from $0-?? providing inclusive access and/or if consultancy work is to be garnered off the back of this, that organisations should perhaps be paid rather than pay for attendance - with funding for costs found from the facilitator as this would effectively be R&D for his private consultancy business. Doesn't sound like this is the intention but there did seem to be a lack of transparency, perhaps due to brevity and time pressure/focus in delivery to organisations asap. I think the concept is great, value high and work much needed. Pre-workshop, I would also solicit and include research that organisations are already doing from attendance of business, governmental and educational workshops, webinars, events etc + any personal study and research to build a resource base for trends and info on social, political, economic and technological driving forces that is and stays within the public domain for access of all groups and organisations. I think I sent you through some of this Robert when you emailed me? Why we work within a gift economy, why everything is open source, why we're moving to zero waste etc... If not, pm me with what you feel would be most useful and I'll share resources I've garnered that may be helpful to the workshop group. Building something virtual here in the UK for similar ends, but as ever, also 1000 other things demanding time/resource priority, especially atm. What informed and continues to inform in my work within Active Mobilty and life in general is where we need to head as a global society, of one human race, who share one planet and are tasked with stewardship of it, each other, and all sentient life.... challenging the prevailing narrative of ownership and extraction. Quite simply, we need to move from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance, we need to dismantle private profit at public risk/expense and practially rewrite many of our stories that are not in alignment with a heart-centred life....the head has had too much focus over the last 200yrs and it's too out of balance! recalled bikes and components

How often do you all check for recalled items on the old bikes? Been seeing these recalled Shimano cranks show up on bikes we've taken in recently: https://www.facebook.com/bikex.org/posts/1425107737695385 Since finding 3 pairs in two months, I printed the recall notice images and put them in the shop to help others find them. Thankfully Shimano is still replacing them. I also have been looking out for recalled Suntour forks <https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2014/scott-trek-recall-bicycles-with-sr-suntou…>, but haven't seen one yet. What else do you guys check for? Do you see anything often? How do you educate staff/volunteers on such recalls?
