We are in the planning stage of our 3rd *Kickstarter* publishing venture, this time centered around *bicycles / women / emancipation*. And we are looking for a particular kind of contribution. Conceived here, in Montreal, but with collaborators all over Europe and Americas, our two previous Kickstarter projects (here http://tiny.cc/3k4ymz and here http://tiny.cc/zl4ymz) were very much concerned with strong social issues - Spanish Civil War, women combating fascism and their role in resistance. This new undertaking looks to bring together the utilitarian object that is the bicycle with practical paper-based artifacts, like calendars and playing cards. These two are then editorially balanced by a book, designed to celebrate the bicycle as a symbol and facilitator of the women’s emancipation movement. Send us a cycling-inspired street-graffiti photo. Or multiple photos / of multiple graffiti, from your city walls, ideally including permission or, at least, the artist name, if known, in order to credit the work. Please specify which name you’d like to be credited to in your email. We will integrate them in the calendar design, and will feature the name or image of the organization of your choice on the Kickstarter crowdfunding and our own social media platforms. BBP is seeking a Shifting Gears Coordinator to lead our programming partnership with the Idaho Department of Corrections. Reports to: Executive Director Classification: Full Time Exempt, plus Benefits Salary Range: $31,200 - $33,280 depending on experience Weekly Schedule: Will included some nights and weekends In 2017, BBP created Shifting Gears, a groundbreaking program to teach incarcerated women how to fix kids' bicycles while earning a bicycle for future transportation needs. In 2020, BBP secured grant funding to expand Shifting Gears to the Idaho Department of Corrections men’s facilities. This program is called Project Kickstand and lives under the umbrella of Shifting Gears programming. Because men incarcerated at this facility generally serve much longer sentences than the women in our Shifting Gears program, there is a new opportunity to build in a certified vocational training program that will lead to future job placement while significantly increasing the amount of bicycles BBP provides to teens. BBP’s Shifting Gears Coordinator will manage all aspects of both the men’s and women’s programs. Hey Kim, Just responding about your Thinktank posting about outdoor bike repair stations. I work for Intercity Transit in Olympia, WA. We experimented with a public tool station mounted at our main transit center. It was removed maybe a month or so after it was installed. It quickly became a bicycle chop-shop for folks in our community, particularly outside of our hours of operation. Two things I would recommend for a public tool station are... 1) Make it secure, but movable. Or it could be in a lockable closest/cage/space. It is difficult to foster a positive use of this resource when no staff is around. 2) Have clearly posted rules about use. I'd recommend listing allowed repairs, or time limits. We had regulars who would camp out at the stand making it unusable for others needing quick fixes. Online Collaborative Workshop on Safe & Effective Shop Operations

I wanted to invite the bike collective community to a collaborative online workshop to make a bit more sense of operating safely & effectively both in the short and long terms, volunteer management, and shop's capacity for providing services. Day: Friday June 12 Time: 3pm Central Time This will be a three-part structured workshop where participants will be paired up with each other and begin to chart the trends they are seeing. We will then look at these as a group. The second part will be working together in small groups to sort out what services you feel are critical to address, the activities to make them happen, and what the cultural aspects for each will be. The final part will be individual or by shop, by focusing on who it is you are serving, what you are offering them, the opportunities there, and the risks involved. I realize that some shops have already figured this stuff out, but I know there are several that are still struggling with it. This is to help them. It would be great to have participants who can share how they have worked things out. It is a 45 minute long workshop. We will be using Zoom for meeting together and Freehand by Invision to collaborate. I built this workshop in grad school and this is the first time doing it digitally. I plan to record it so I can see what works and what doesn't. Hi. I am a member of The Bike Connector, an earn-a-bike and bike collective program in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. We recently gained access to container (12m L x 2.3m W x 2.26m H; 40' L x 7.6' W x 7.4' H) to help manage our inventory of bikes and parts. I want to maximize the capacity of the container, while allowing for easy access to the bikes. I'm sure others have solved this optimization problem. Any suggestions for how to organize this space? Hi Wade, everyone. I converted a 10x30ft shipping container for our solar powered workshop. Everything we create is open source, not had time/capacity to get the build online yet but happy to share how we built it/photos/etc. Essentially I built a timber frame inside with rockwool insulation, clad this with 18mm ply (9mm is adequate but I had to work with what I could get), fitted 6 x 250W solar panels on the roof and built a power unit incorporating an isolator switch, leading to a Victron Energy charge controlled to feed 2 x 100Ah Lead Crystal batteries in a vented secure workbench. All workbenches, toolboards built from same materials, surfaces on the main benches 3mm aluminium sheeting, dibond on two [upcycled building hoardings]. He physically attacked two children who were posting George Floyd memorial flyers. Don't know much more about it. If this guy was from my town, I'd likely recognize his bike at least. Hi everyone, I've heard everywhere that bikes are in extremely short supply, especially because of an extremely high demand currently, and that this dynamic is even more pronounced due to tariffs imposed on China. Now obviously, this might spur domestic production of bicycles, which maybe could be awesome. But in the meantime, it isn't awesome - people can't get bikes. Those of us out there - maybe most of us - who deal primarily in used bikes, in the meantime *are* (or can be) that domestic production. I'm bringing this up in case anyone hasn't though of it all or really processed it yet, because I imagine everyone's local or even state governments are currently accepting proposals for various grants. At this time, collectively, we literally, physically are positioned to be major gatekeepers to possibly tens of thousands of people becoming cyclists or resuming cycling who otherwise wouldn't, when major retailers and various LBS have no ability to meet demand. This is also a huge opportunity to turn the general public on to the goodness and soundness of reused bikes. A lot of people think if it's old or used, it's diminished in some way. All of us know that isn't true, and now we have a greater ability than ever to prove the truth of this message. Here at Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles we've been running nonstop, though with a skeleton crew, since the virus hit, and reusing old bikes for ecological reasons has been one of our primary purposes for several decades. I'm sure most of you don't need it, but if anyone needs or wants pointers or advice, I'd be happy to help. Automating the shop

We're currently fixing people's bikes for them after they drop their bike off, where we used to just give advice and lend a hand when needed. We also are offering test-rides by appointment. Happy May Day everyone! I'm curious if and how folks are deciding to participate in "Bike Month" this year, since most regular activities or events can't happy during the pandemic. Since we are usually busy busy running classes and open shop in our space, we have some extra time on our hands this season that could be used to celebrate, support and encourage cycling in other ways. *I'd love to hear if anyone has come up with ideas to engage people, specifically outside of your shop spaces.* I also understand that even just *continuing to exist* is keeping our hands full in many places, so I certainly don't expect most organizations have the time or energy (or funds) to think about "Bike Month". Hi all, The (Utah) Bicycle Collective closed on March 13th. Our mechanics worked in the shop with social distancing and hand washing measures (IF they felt comfortable coming to work). Our staff worked hard for 2 weeks to shift online and began taking bike and limited parts purchase by appointment only after those 2 weeks. Customers must browse our *online inventory and pick one bike to test ride. Then book a 20 minute time slot with us. In case the bike is not to their liking they must come with another in mind or we may pick out another that is their size for them. We do curbside service except for payment, then wipe down everything with sanitizer. All staff wear their air filter masks and gloves when interacting with customers. Only one at a time allowed in the shop to pay. We will begin taking repair services by appointment (curbside dropoff) at the end of this week - something we have never done before. We are normally a DIY shop. Our other programs and donations are closed. I've been working to engage volunteers online through community engagement and online workshop ideas. We've thought of creating a quarantine area (moving aside items in our storage unit to make part of it a quarantine area, leave bikes there for 2 weeks or so before touching). Or sanitizing outside before bringing inside. Having donors schedule an appointment for drop off. Ring doorbell and leave by door. If need a donation receipt they can call. Any safe practices or ideas for accepting clients who need a bicycle for transportation (we have a charitable program where they can for free or by volunteering 6 hours)?
