Notes from Lesson's learned from B!B! Guadalajara?

Does anyone have notes from the debrief we had in Guadalajara after BikeBike? We had a round table and there was some real lesson's learned. I would be ecstatic if someone kept a copy of those notes. Anyone Anyone? I'm BCC'ing some people that I know were there. If no one has notes, maybe we can have a quick conference call to try to brainstorm/remember what those lessons were. Thanks! -Momoko

Joshua Tree

I've a couple of friends who are headed to Joshua Tree area to work for a few months. They've got a couple of bikes that they're carrying with them. I gave them the once over, and both need significant work. Normally, I'd offer to do this for them myself, but they want to leave in the morning, so time is not on my side. I suggested they find a co-op/collective in the area to give them a hand. What is the closest to JT? Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance. Stuart Nottingham

Hi pals, The Mechanical Gardens has been essentially an all-volunteer effort so far, but we're exploring adding some paid positions to reach real organizational sustainability. Things like fundraising, fostering organizational partnerships, and even just coordinating operations and volunteers are challenging to do with no paid staff time. It's obviously tricky to make this shift though. One thing we need to do is comfortably distinguish: (a) the types of work for which people are paid, versus (b) the types of work for which people volunteer. *So: in your organization, what are some of the ways you divide these things up?* A related question might be: *What are your titles and job descriptions for your paid positions? * I know this topic opens a whole can of worms, but maybe we can get into it a couple of questions at a time... Robert's Rules of Order

How many bike co-ops out there use Robert's Rules of Order or at least some form of that to run their meetings? It has been in our bylaws for a decade but we have not been using it and our meetings have suffered. We have one member who is questioning the value or even that there are successful organizations that use it effectively. If you have tried it and it did not work well, what has worked better? What are key points of bike maintenance that people don't know? How to pump tires, adjust seat height, and identify if anything is noisy or loose. I like the ABC Quick check. Is it at all possible to bring a bicycle and a pump, and maybe a wrench to adjust seat height unless it is QR? Would recommend that. In 90 mins you can have everyone, or many, demonstrate proper tire inflation and they've actually done it, so now they can do it on their own in the future with a minute or two of hands-on experience.

One time youth curriculum

Hello everybody, We are going to be giving a 1 1/2 hour class on bike basics to 17 middle school kids and then again to 17 high school students. This is being done offsite in a classroom setting with no bikes or tools. Im hoping that some of you might have some advice on what to cover in this short period of time and any tips and tricks you may know. I am thinking start with a bike anatomy overview and then move into fixing a flat which would consist of presenter demonstration interspersed with a little Q and A then followed up with a student hands on with a punctured innertube to patch. Perhaps make a game out of it? Finishing the class with an overview of the pre-ride saftey check. I can hand out laminated checklist cards for them to keep. Liability mitigation

Transcontinental visiting

Hopefully not too far off topic. I'm planning a cross country bike tour from Astoria OR to Bangor ME. Along the way, I hoped to visit at least one bike co-op/collective/kitchen and wondered a couple of things: 1. Does anyone know if this has been done before? I figure my bike will need attention at points along the way and would rather support members of the collective than retail establishments if possible. 2. Who's near the ACA Northern Tier and Atlantic Coast routes, preferably with some camping nearby? This trip won't take place until next year at the soonest, so I know some changes may occur between now and then. One thing I've learned in life is it's often easier to be flexible than not. Pretty new to this Josh (we've only been running two years and it was mainly just me in the first year) but I've found that building a diverse group of volunteers and matching skills and desires to tasks is working pretty well. Some people are more admin focused, some are brilliant mechanics but hate paperwork and general workshop tasks, some are really detail oriented, others less so....have you set out a core list of needs of the enterprise, and a core set of competencies (and ratings) for volunteers? This is something I'm looking to start formally, but with only a handful of volunteers, it's much easier at this stage. Also, are long serving volunteers training others and do they appreciate how they're building your organisation and a key part of it as a result?
