Wheel management

We have a lot of wheels on hand, some ready to go, others needing bearings or truing, and still others piled up. We hang some from ceiling using hooks, and have tried a rack to hold them. The problem comes when people just set wheels on the floor in front of the rack, or pile them in. We need to find an efficient way to store them. We're in the UK, slightly different rules, but ensure any bikes sold have working bell, wheel reflectors (clear or orange), white front reflector and red rear reflector. No need for this but it's what you'd expect from a new bike and we do it for best practise. During popups where we check peoples bikes, we not whether they have these too...pointing out why they're added to new bikes, though not demanding they go get them fitted (by us or anyone else) if absent. policy for reflectors?

Hi all, I'm new to the Think Tank, though I've been around bike coops and advocacy for years. I searched the archives but didn't find anything relevant to my question... Do any of you have a policy about whether and which reflectors (or lights) must be installed on a bike that leaves your shop? Has your coop had a discussion about it? I'd like to hear from those groups who've considered the question, to provide input for our own discussion on it. Thanks in advance! -Ann

Hey guys, Thanks so much for all the great info and ideas I've been harvesting so much from everyone's contributions to these threads. We're running a workshop around positive consent during our bicycle festival which we want to be fun and accessible: i.e. not preachy or confessional. We had thought that we'd do a couple of mechanical skills: puncture repair and wheel truing in the space; but couple this with some discussion around consent. But it needs to be safe for people who are there. We're bike mechanics, not therapists. So had thought of a game involving bike puns (spinning out, going for a ride, whatever). So can you share your best bike pun? I'd love some more to add to my collection, so that they might be incorporated into a workshop. Ulick

Has anyone looked into selling bicycles consignment at their shops? Or looked into it? I'd love to hear what successes, issues, pitfalls, and/or barriers people have ran into. We're brainstorming some ideas that would allow members (BBP has a yearly membership program that gives folks unlimited shop time for a year) to sell bicycles consignment through BBP. Ride On! Hi All, Someone asking for hints on setting up a workshop has prompted me to post this video on youtube.https://youtu.be/ioiEZ7pot-E <https://youtu.be/ioiEZ7pot-E> It is both the story of how we moved although once I shot it on the phone I realised I had not remembered everything and bikes are my thing not videos. But more particularly it is a thank you to all the people from community bike shops around the globe who emailed me with hints that we could use when moving, I hope this helps Ulick and anyone else who intends moving. As we moved last October it is still fresh in my memory. Some things I did not mention in the video and for which we received as hints :- If possible put in insulation, lights ceiling fans ( the flickering in the video) and power points before moving in as it is really difficult to retrofit. Buy the best work stands you can afford. If you are falling behind schedule, your volunteers are flagging and if you have the funds use tradesmen to complete difficult technical tasks. There is nothing worse than clients and volunteers coming to a closed workshop. We closed for one day and had every volunteer and friend help us move that day. The rest of the time we split our volunteers in to 2 groups. The moving group and those who continued to work on bikes. Signs and labels everywhere to make it easy for newcomers. Many people are embarrassed to always be asking where items are situated and labels enable volunteers to learn the name of parts and tools themselves. Finally use your volunteers non- bicycle skills, One of ours is an architect who laid out the space, another who was a demolition guy helped to bring down walls safely and those with welding skills helped with the racks. Here's a wild hair of a question, perhaps: Do any of you operate in conjunction with another effort/cause/concept? Our neighborhood is a food desert as of March 2017, a historically diverse neighborhood, and an urban neighborhood on the brink of a whole lotta development. Many of us want it to remain truly diverse and make it an equitable, affordable place to live, and many of us are involved in multiple efforts (community gardens, food desert issues, local school support, broad historical research, etc.). HI Folks, I'm part of a start-up effort in an urban neighborhood in Cincinnati. We hope to have our own shop, one day, where we will rebuild and sell bikes, affordably. In the meantime, we have pop-up repair sessions (2 Saturdays/month) planned for the spring/summer, this year. We did a few of these part of last summer, but didn't charge anything. Job Title: Bicycle Mechanic/Collective member The Bike Church is a collectively run bicycle repair shop and educational space located in downtown Santa Cruz. We are seeking a highly motivated core member to share responsibility in running the shop. This includes both working with the public during our open hours as well as maintaining/running the shop in the off hours, doing repairs, and strategizing for the shop's long term plan. The Bike Church is a cooperative which means you will be working side-by-side with other mechanics on jobs that include but are not limited to: assisting the public in working on bikes, processing incoming donations of used bikes and parts, fixing bikes to sell, office work, cleaning, inventory, as well as one-off projects which vary. You must be a self-motivated, responsible individual who is task-oriented and understands the importance of communication. It is not required but very helpful if applicants have some familiarity with our space and collectively run groups. We would like to strengthen the collective process and also expand the business. Please have some experience with bike repair and the bike industry. Interest in bookkeeping is a plus. Bilingual/multilingual is a plus. Grant writing is a plus. Computer skills are a plus. An important value of the Bike Church is to be a safe space for individuals from our community no matter their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, income, or ability. Thus any applicants must also be able to foster, respect and create a safe, fun, space for our community. In addition, the Bike Church is at times a very vibrant, busy space, and staff members must have strong people skills and, importantly, communication about boundaries. Quill Stem Wedge Angle?

Does anyone have information or experience about the typical wedge angle for quill stems? Saint Sheldon doesn't mention a specific angle, but I did find an ISO document of dubious brevity that claims it's supposed to be 36 degrees since 1990. Measuring a stem (early 90s I think) I have with me, I'm getting more like 34 degrees.
