Pedagogic tools on bike mechanics

Hi everyone, Cyclo North-South is a community organization in Montréal, Quebec (Canada) that collects used bicycles in order to give access to a way of transportation for people with low income and/or marginalized, through local and international projects. In each projects, we try to reinforce bike mechanics skills of our partners and people receiving bicycles to make them more autonomous since the ressources (bike mechanics, incomes) are very limited especially in rural area. One of the issue of our partners in Africa and Latin America is that they don¹t have easily access to pedagogic tools on bike mechanics. We are currently working on gathering what already exists (local and international) regarding pedagogic tools on bike mechanics (printed or other types) in order to either share those tools to our partners either adapt them so they can be used by youths and general public that is in Togo, Ghana, Haiti, Ecuador, etc. The objective is to provide a teaching tool that includes a guide on tools, tune-ups and repairs. ISO: Consensus Comic

Heyyo, does anyone have a comic that about how to do consensus process? Or have a resource that you love the bestest best when it comes to explaining the How or the Why of consensus? Maybe even a document you use at your shop? I'm thinking about making a rudimentary consensus comic and could use help in the way of references to consult. Every google search result about consensus is like "here, read this long document for the next three hours," and in those documents, the "How To" steps are buried in like ten million words about guiding principles. Everyone learns differently, and that's not the best way to learn for a lot of us. A comic could help. Please send me your resources. Here at Blackstone Bicycle Works we’re looking for a program manager. If you don’t already know us, Blackstone is a community bike shop and youth program on Chicago’s south side (you can also check out our instagram <https://www.instagram.com/blackstonebikes/> to get an idea of what we do). Over the years the youth program has expanded to include after school and summer programming, gardening camp, physics classes, cooking classes, art on Fridays, a cyclocross team, shop internships, externships with other shops, college advising, career field trips, and even college scholarships. Additionally, the youth are vital to the running of the shop, learning mechanic and business skills, and earning a bike after their first 25 hours in the program. We’ve been successful enough that nearly all of our paid mechanics have come up through the program! That said, there’re lots of ways to grow and improve the business and our youth programming. We're excited to bring on a program manager to work with our current staff, volunteers, and youth on this and are thankful to any of you that can help us find someone that can take on the role. Cargo Bicycle Building Apprenticeship Program

Dear Community Bicycle Builders, Starting November 27th, 2017, the Center for Appropriate Transport in Eugene, OR will be hosting a 4 month long live-in apprenticeship program. Apprentices will learn the frame building skills necessary to fabricate their own Tri-Hauler, as well as the entrepreneurial skills to use their Tri-Hauler for a pedal-powered business venture of their choice. Apprentices will become competent fabricators learning to weld ( TIG and brazing), machinists, industrial sewers, gardeners, CAD users and more. Hey hey, We're working on some strategic planning at Charlie's <http://www.charliesfreewheels.ca/> in TO and I'm wondering if any folks can share examples of interview and/or survey questions that you've used for strat plan or program evaluation purposes? Any "youth" specific examples would be super awesome, but other examples would be great as well. We'll be interviewing/surveying our community partners and holding a less formal group discussion with the youths and volunteers. If anyone has an experience that they think would be helpful, lemmme know! Would love to chat by phone/skype/email, etc...Whatever works! Automated bike sharing programs

Hello everyone! It seems our university finally got the idea on making a bicycle sharing program within campus premises. We are investigating which are the best/cheaper ones to launch it soon. We have seen the zagster and the bike docks that are unlock via a smartphone. We dont have much information only that they want it to be automatic and with aprox 70 bikes for starter. Do you know any systems that are available outside the US? Thanks in advance R.

Bike Trailer for Transporting Bikes

Hi folks, I'm on a campus where our main location is small and our warehouse location is far enough away that it's a pain to bring parts and bikes back and forth. I'm looking for plans or the actual trailer for sale for a bike trailer that can carry complete bikes. I would also be interested in hearing from folks who have transported bikes by bike. Is this a situation where an e-bike might be required? Mikey, Cycle Transitions is having challenges finding a suitable location at a reasonable cost so we're looking at alternative models to the traditional fixed location. One of these is a storage unit plus a mobile workshop - whether that be a smaller one pulled by a bike or a larger one either pulled by a vehicle or is a panel van of sorts. Ideally the unit would be able to meet the needs of servicing most repairs and and/or have the equipment for the safe cycling courses we do out on location. Hi, We've started to offer basic 'health checks' (gear and brake tune ups mainly, plus diagnosing major issues and signposting to servicing/fixes outside the scope of these checks) from a mobile rig Previously carried a Park Tools stand under one arm and had all tools in an army rucksack and cycled to events - not ideal though for my back (and couldn't ask volunteers to do the same really!) I modified a broken trolley I found on the street & made a mini tool rack from leftover trolley tubing, broken broom handle and a bit of aluminium plate Also affixed another plate to the bottom of the Park Tools allen key holder to make a benchmounted holder All the tools fit in the Park Tools box as shown Gloves and lube, folder, first aid kit, rags, etc carried in the army rucksack Trailer easily carries two workstands and tools, could probably carry 3 stands with no problem Added detail of the hitch if useful... Maybe a smaller scale than what you're doing? Hi All W e have had our BikeMobile, a mobile bike shop on wheels, for a few years. It is a 24 foot step van ( the same size and type as a fedex truck) we received a grant and donations for the truck and build out. We operate on sliding scale basis and do both full price and free services fairly well. The job description is below, and also attached as a pdf... *Bike Shop Lead Mechanic – Neighborhood Bike Works* *Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) *inspires youth and strengthens Philadelphia communities by providing equitable access to bicycling and bike repair through education, recreation, leadership, and career building opportunities. NBW offers after-school and summer programming to youth, runs adult bike repair programming, and operates a community bike shop as a source of earned revenue for our non-profit organization. *Position Summary: *Neighborhood Bike Works is seeking a part-time *Bike Shop Lead Mechanic* in our Community Bike Shop. This position is responsible for repairing and refurbishing used bicycles for sale in our earned-revenue bike shop, and assists members of the public in finding bikes, bike parts, and accessories sold in our shop. Additionally, this position will greet members of our community from various stakeholder groups, including youth, parents, volunteers, donors, and adult program participants. The Lead Mechanic works alongside volunteers to assist the public during NBW’s Bike Church hours. This position is expected to model NBW’s values of access, equity, and in creating and maintaining a safe space at NBW. *Reports to: *Shop Manager *Start Date & Work Schedule: * The preferred start date for this position is November 6, 2017. This part-time position will work 30 hours-per-week during our shop’s peak season (April 1 to September 30) and 20 hours-per-week during the off-season (October 1 to March 31). The position will include some evening and weekend work, and is based at our Community Bike Shop and headquarters at 3939 Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia. *Primary Responsibilities* · Repair and refurbish bicycles to a saleable quality, assess value of bicycles, and sell bicycles during our Community Shop time. · Deliver helpful customer service to a diverse base of customers and volunteers during Bike Church and the Community Bike Shop. · Assist patrons with bike repairs during Bike Church hours, ensuring the focus remains on learning and empowerment for Bike Church patrons. · Support daily shop operations including daily setup and closing of workshop areas and sales floor, organizing product for sale, answering phone, cleaning, and light facilities projects. · Support Donations Coordinator in keeping inventory organized and sorting bike donations. *Qualifications:* The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience as a bike mechanic, a year or more of work experience in a bike shop or another customer-focused retail environment, will exhibit excellent communication and customer service skills, and be skilled in the use of a wide range of bicycle tools and the repair of bicycles built from the 1970’s and later. Candidates with non-traditional work and education experience are encouraged – please tell us about those experiences that qualify you for this position. Used Bikes Available - Panhandle of Florida

Hey folks, Recently, I received a request from a bike rental operator located in the panhandle of Florida looking for a new home each year for their used bicycle fleet. It was described to me that about 700 bikes are available for free on an annual basis - the owner only wants the bikes to be picked up from their location. As described to me, the bikes are in working condition and have about one season of rental wear and tear on them. Currently, the owner is taking the bikes to the scrapyard as they are replaced. Burning Man Bikes

Heads up, according to a friend of mine who just came back from Burning Man in Nevada, many, many bikes were left abandoned after the event. According to the event's webpage [1]: Love 'Em… and Please Don't Leave 'Em Leave no trace. A bike is a BIG trace. Somehow it's become a common myth (playa legend, perhaps?) that it's perfectly acceptable to leave your bike behind upon striking your camp. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you pack it in, pack it out! However, apparently, it is perfectly acceptable to leave bikes behind, so there may still be lot's of bikes for bike projects in the region of Black Rock, Nevada to gather up. Choosing Leaders

Hello compadres! So, we're trying to go from a create squads to handle different arenas of planning and activity -- like Shop Management, Communications, Programming, Volunteer Coordination, Partnerships, etc. Each squad will have a captain. *Here's the request for help: *We're looking for your insight and experience to help us figure out how to pick our captains, especially this first time. - How have you dealt with electing / selecting leaders? - What lessons have you learned about good ways to do this? - How about bad ways to do this? What should we be careful of? - How can we best inoculate ourselves against interpersonal conflicts muddying the process? - Are there anonymous voting systems, consensus systems, or other systems you recommend for this kind of thing? (FYI, our group is nascent enough that we don't yet have a strong consensus model in place for making big decisions.) For reference about captains in specific: - Captains are the squad’s points-of-contact, coordinators for its activities, and default squad spokespeople. They’re responsible for the squad’s workflow, and for communicating with the collective about the squad’s initiatives, progress, and needs -- also for structuring how volunteers can participate in the squad’s activities. - Captains’ stated mission also includes supporting and engaging with ideas from their squad members and from the larger collective too -- and calling for extra teamwork when the squad needs it. Hello Friends and Allies We will be meeting at Working Bikes, in Chicago, this Sunday at 4:45pm to work on the Exchange Program blueprint. In this session we will be filling in ideas into a matrix. The categories we will be filling in are Touchpoints, People Involved, Systems, Policy, Fact/Observation, Metric/Data, Questions/Unknowns, Critical Moments, Ideas/Opportunities, and Phase Timeline. We have already broken the program down into its key steps. This session will simply be a brainstorm for each of those categories for each step. Please feel free to share your insights even if you can't make the session and I will plug them into the blueprint.
