Hi all, Thanks to the guy who answered the phone at the Community Bike Project in Omaha, I found this list which I hope will be helpful in preparing a report that will hopefully lead to funding a major investment in community bike shops in California. I need to include in my report a decent budget estimate for opening and operating a shop, and for the number of bikes that we can reasonably expect to recycle through the shop through earn-a-bike programs and direct sales of donated used bikes. I asked this question on the bike-equity network list and got a couple good responses that I’d like to add to before preparing my final report. Allen, At Columbus Bike Co-op we have Shop Monitors as well as a full-time staff person (he is paid hourly, and is very underpaid for his experience. We are lucky to have him, and are working on our fundraising so we can pay him more). Shop Monitors help folks fix their bikes and open/close the shop as needed. We also have a Shop Monitor Training Program; this ensures that the Monitors know what they're doing and also draws in more people to volunteer who have an interest in fixing bikes but are not as skilled yet. Our shop is open 2-3 days a week for 3 hours at a time. We are hoping to add another day during the summer that will be staffed with newly trained volunteers. We have an operations committee that handles issues that arise. It meets quarterly. If you are interested, I can connect you with our shop manager. He would be glad to shed some light on more of our operations. All:We are tossing around ideas of how to grow our shop manager roster. For the last 5 years, we have operated Broke Spoke with a Board of Directors, most of whom do mission oriented work but are not involved in the day to day activities of the shop, and a Steering Committee. Our current shop managers are made up from our Steering Committee, all long time volunteers who have agreed to work X number of hours / month and be in charge of opening and closing the shop as a shop manager a minimum of once a month. Currently, the Steering Committee has 4 members and this works well for handling shop related issues / procedures during our monthly steering committee meeting. We currently have 8 people who make up our Committed Volunteers. These folks work a minimum of two shifts / month in exchange for 24 hour access to the shop. We are looking at expanding the number of days we are open but need additional shop managers. The initial amount of bikes is 50 and we have around 15 meters to storage at least half of them. Hello everyone! Are you ready for Bike!Bike! in Detroit this Fall? Well, I'm ready also, however I'm doing a fundraiser ride from Vancouver, BC Canada to Tijuana, Mexico, I will be leaving during the 3rd week of August 2016 and will not return until late October. The purpose of this fundraiser ride is to provide biking programs for youth in disadvantaged areas within Chicago. The fundraiser will provide funding for them to sustain and/or start their youth based biking programs. The youth of need activities to hep prevent them from getting into trouble or worse. Being involved in a biking program helps them learn discipline, develop thinking skills, problem solving and in some cases business skills. Youths involved in biking can experience different communities and open the world to their dreams and desires. Bicycling develops discipline while learning bicycle safety, the youth acquire their thinking skills when they're learning how the components of a bicycle works, problem solving skills evolve when the youth learn how to repair a faulty bicycle component, and the business skills develop when they learn how to manage a bicycle shop. Biking can help teach youth to make better life choices. Hey everyone, We're involved in a couple programs that provide free/by donation bikes to folks that wouldn't otherwise have access and have recently identified a real need for accessories (particularly locks, but also helmets and lights). Has anyone had any success getting discounted or donated accessories from distributors, commercial shops (i.e. deadstock) or through fundraisers or bike drives? Liability Issues

Hi yall! I am working to revive Holy City Bike CoOp- a bike collective in Charleston, SC. Recently we had a someone voice a concern about liability with repaired bikes. For instance, what if someone is given or purchases a bike that the collective has repaired and it breaks or malfunctions while they are riding it? Is the collective responsible? A guy walked into our shop in Indianapolis looking for someone with bike skills to volunteer to help out his church camp. They have a riding program as a part of their summer adventure camp. Many people have donated bikes and they don't have the skill to sort and rank and repair them. They'd like some help with this. Cost of Shop Set Up & First Year Budget

Hello, I'm writing from Bikes del Pueblo in San Diego. We've been a volunteer run pop-up / mobile bike kitchen for many years with no public storefront. California Bike Coalition has approached us with the possibility of support for finally getting that space. In preparing for our meeting with them, I wanted an idea of what it cost for similar projects to get started. Can folks who have the numbers shoot me a message with how much it cost to get their spaces set up (including insurance) as well as how much it took to operate the space in the first few years? What were the primary components of your budget? These examples would help me paint a picture of what we could create in San Diego. We have been operating on a very small scale, limited storage space, and volunteer staff so it is hard to estimate how "big" we could be if we had support to make this leap. Hello from Oxford, UK! We finalised our Safer Spaces Policy (attached) at the end of last year and display it on the wall in our workshop, asking every workshop user to agree to it upon signing in. The process for its creation involved as many of our workshop volunteers as could attend (I think there were 10-15 in total) along with a few of our workshop mechanics/tutors. The finished document is just one sheet of paper. We do have complaints procedures and the like but wanted our safer spaces policy to be quick & easy to take on board, hence the simple structure and brief wording. Hope it’s useful. Ride on! Scholarships for 2016 Youth Bike Summit

Hi all - I wanted to share this with everyone - Cycles for Change is excited to offer at least five $325 scholarships (plus free registration) for youth aged 14-22 from out-of-state to visit St. Paul, MN for the 2016 Youth Bike Summit, which will be held May 27-29! While we understand this might not cover the full amount of travel and lodging costs, it should provide significant support for people wishing to come to the YBS. Youth and/or organizations attending the YBS for the first time will get priority. http://youthbikesummit.org/2016-scholarships/ We also are able to offer ten scholarships, thanks to the MnDOT and MN Safe Routes to School program, for youth within Minnesota, but outside the Twin Cities metro area, to travel to the Youth Bike Summit.
