We are about to open our 4th Co op and having a difficulty with the City of Riverside, Ca. We are dropping a container for storage of our tools and materials along with a place to store donations. It is being placed next to a community garden along a multi use path, the Santa Ana River Trail. We will conduct all business outside and share the container with the garden, storage of garden tools. Now the city wants the container to be ADA compliant which we don't have a real issue with but for some reason this is throwing in delay after delay. They want an architect to design plans for the whole area to be compliant along with garden. Has anyone run into such a problem or do I take this as a passive way of saying we don't want a Co op even though WE asked you for one. Hola compadres! We left Bike!Bike!Columbus feeling excited about a lot of new projects and collaborations, including bikebikeZINEZINE: a web-based, de-centralized, co-operative communications tool that would fill some important gaps in how we currently communicate between our shops and cities, not to mention how we communicate as a community to the world beyond our borders. bikebikeZINEZINE would function, to put it most simply, as a news feed that aggregated, edited, and rebroadcasted news from our de-centralized projects and geographies. Here are the main things that this was proposed to accomplish: - Sharing and amplifying news, ideas, and wisdom! - Lowering the barrier for finding out what's happening in other collectives! - Strengthening our community over distance & between conferences! - "Mainstreaming” our content for people outside our network! - Reinforcing how we're part of a greater movement! - Keeping ourselves motivated and exciting other people! At Bike!Bike! in GDL we have the chance to start things off for real and get this project rolling as a collective effort. I’m adding a workshop for us to master what we need to know to make the wheels of bikebikeZINEZINE begin to turn. Get psyched! Turn out! Roll deep! More to come soon. Deepest love, Josh

Fire Safety Reminder

I have volunteered mostly at two bike collectives. They have both had fires. One was a spontaneous rag fire that put the entire shop out of commission for an entire summer (good thing they had just done an inventory; insurance needed that information), and the other was apparently a fire in the metal recycling. Hey Folks! So at Our Community Bikes in Vancouver, we're thinking it's time to set up a proper sign in / sign out system, combined with a membership and volunteer database. Ideally we would like to know what software is out there that can track people coming in and using our space, a simple laptop or desktop kiosk where folks can type in info, and it would enter our database. Also to serve as a database that members can register into, and again wherein volunteers can sign up, and log their hours, and tasks accomplished. sooo.. any ideas? Jesse Cooper

We're (Cycles for Change in St. Paul, MN ---www.CyclesForChange.org) is starting a search for a comprehensive database for all of our programs and activities. Bike Apprenticeship?

Hello all- I am a recent High School graduate undertaking a Gap Year this coming year. This summer I interned at a local non-profit community bike shop. If possible I would love to attend classes at UBI or Barnett's in order to form a solid understanding of bike mechanics. After taking the class, however I would want to apply my new skills in a bike shop so I wouldn't immediately forget them. My question is this: Would any of you know a place I could work at and learn about bikes in exchange for room and board? I wouldn't need pay, just a place to stay- maybe a housing exchange or something of that sort. Ideally my "apprenticeship" would last for about a month. We typically reach our storage capacity of donated bikes around this time of year. Our process is to assess and price bikes before selling them (cash or volunteer equity), but we can get gridlocked if we have too many incoming donations. We're considering an annual bike giveaway, and I'm looking for some wisdom/experience. My pros and cons list for a giveaway event for un-assessed donations: *Pros* Expose more public to the shop Clear out bikes that are a physical and mental burden on the volunteers Redistribute more bikes! (part of our mission) *Cons* Breaks our principle of earned equity vs hand-out. Would likely lead to redistributing bikes that we'll need to work on anyway. Along the same lines, could hurt our rep if we give away broken or dangerous bikes. Could still leave us with the bottom-of-the-barrel bikes. Does anyone have a consistent method for managing bike capacity? My gut tells me we should just commit to a bike-count, and stick with it. Then we can hone our process for pulling the wheat from the chaff on an ongoing basis. -Andy Brok Spoke, Lexington

Hello wonderful thinktank, here at Troy Bike Rescue in Troy, NY (albany area) we are embarking on a session of culling and cleaning out our stock. we will generate some scrap for sure, but we will also be culling a load of overstock complete bikes in 'project' phase that we would rather not scrap if possible. this is just an email of inquiry to see if anyone out there within a couple hour motor vehicle range of us is currently filling a crate for export, or if any up and coming shops need a boost in their project bikes. How much time spent on overhauls?

Greetings fellow bicycle enthusiasts and all-around do-gooders, We run an earn-a-bike program, though in our program, which is relatively short in duration, the students receive a used bike which has already been reconditioned. Consequently, I am currently overhauling/refurbishing bikes for use in our fall classes. My question is... how long (# of hrs) do you typically spend on a complete bicycle overhaul? What does it include? Do you always put in new cables/housing, and do BB/headset/hub rebuilds, or just on the extra crunchy bikes? Tips for basement (stairs!) youth bicycle program

Hello from Baltimore Youth Kinetic Energy (BYKE)! We are moving to a new and awesome location, but we’ll be in a basement. We might only be there for 1 year, so major renovations aren’t going to happen. I have two main concerns: 1. Stairs(full flight, medium width)+ young people+bikes without brakes -a safe ramp? -has anyone tried building a kinetically powered platform elevator? -has anyone tried to build a track to secure a bicycle into and then let it fall with style? having some kind of slowing mechanism? 2. Ventilation codes -is that for the landlord to figure out? -regardless: were there any cheap and easy ways to increase ventilation? Any other unpredictable lessons learned from those who have held DIY bike workshops in basements? Thanks! I've been on the website for months now looking for a registration button and still don't see one. How do I register for the Bike!Bike! 2015 conference in Guadalajara? How does one sign up to do a session, see what sessions are being proposed? How do I find out whether I need to rent a room or not? Where is all the info? I'm lost. -Ashanti
