Kids Programming

Dear Collective Genius: MoBo runs a Kids Day program in the summer and we wanted to know how a few other co-ops ran similiar programs. Our program works like this: We are an all volunteer run program but we have a paid coordinator who runs Kids Day. It's one day a week and kids must have a parent sign a waiver form. We will work with kids to fix up their own bikes and we have an earn-a-bike program for kids who need a bike. Kids are asked to work with our gardens program to work in the gardens, including weeding, turning compost, picking fruit, planting, learning how to build an oven using solar energy--things like that. However, we have a couple questions that we are wondering if the Collective Genius could help us with. They are: 1) Our program has exploded in this, our fifth year. We normally have 15 kids a day at kids day. This year,we 've been having over 40 or 50 on site. And because we are volunteer run, we do not have enough volunteers to watch all the kids or get bikes out to every kid who wants one. Has anyone ran a program with this many kids before? The amount of kids has also lead to lots of fighting and arguing with mechanics and, sadly, bike theft. How has, or would, your organization handle this situation? We do have activities for kids to do while they wait. For example, this year two science teachers come down and do experiements with the kids and we try to get some of them to go to the Patch a Tube station to learn how to patch their own tires. 2) How do you keep your kids activties going year around? We would like to keep this going as clearly there is a huge demand that has built up over the years and through our marketing program. Most of our kids are from our neighborhood so having something like this year around gives them options for safe and fun places to be. 3) How do you encourage bike safety? Helmets are uncool with our set and although we distribute them, we find them discarded later. Because we are located in a high traffic area where many accidents do occur, we would love to encourage kids to wear helmets. Whew that's a lot! Thank you for listening and for any advice or input! Okay y'all, here's the deal. http://outdoors.maker.good.is/projects/bikeproject We're in the running for a $5,000 vote based grant. If we get it, we're giving away 100 re-cycled bikes along with lights, patch kits, and a basic maintenance class. We're teaming up with our local advocacy group ( www.bikeasy.org )for the selection process to make sure it goes to the needy and underserved of New Orleans. We have been fluctuating between #1 and #4 out of 115 entries. The grant is supposed to be for "Social justice in the outdoors". Not to shit talk, but currently in first place is "The Epitome Project", which is noble, BUT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OUTDOORS. I really don't mind if the garden project or the rock climbing project win, but the fact that project to fund musicians on the other side of the planet is in a dead heat with projects that do work with much larger local impact (and actually fit the grant competition category) is a little bothersome. Could you vote for us (or whoever you think will do the most good with the money?) The easiest way is with facebook. Doing it with email is fine too, but you have to confirm your vote afterwards. Bike Valet/Bike Parking services hourly rates?

Bicycle Longmont jumped into the Bike Valet service field in 2010. Last year it really took off and this year is no exception. We are currently being asked to provide this service (previously for free) at many special events. We currently offer this service for free at Longmont's Farmers' Market where we park upwards to 175 bikes every saturday between 7am & 1pm. We don't have the volunteer capacity to handle all the events that are requesting our highly successful service. Also since providing the service it appears bike parking is becoming a "communitywide value". At any rate, like you, we're a cash strapped 501c3 and wondered who of the ThinkTank are charging for this service and what are your rates? Afterall it takes time and money to do good in the neighborhood! BTW we'd continue providing the Farmers' Market for free but would require anyone wanting to work a special event to have prior experience volunteering with our Farmers' Market, first. I’ve also had reservations about going with a web-based system but in the end I think it’s the most adaptable solution. I’m not worrying about hardware integration for now, I’m pretty sure anything is possible but I think that would be far down the list of requirements for most shops that need free software. It will be open source and modular, so there won’t be a single point person for the entire system, I’ll do my best to set up a good environment for users to interact with the developers and for developers to provide documentation. This is a bit of an experiment but I have far more faith in open and crowd sourcing technologies than I do having a long term individual or group in charge (including myself). Recycle-A-Bike, Providence, uses a system to track volunteer contact info, time volunteering in the shop, points, cash flow and program info. We designed it from file maker. We would be happy to make a copy of the file for anyone who is interested in using it in their community shop. You would need to purchase filemaker. It is backed up with carbonite so if our computer crashes we can resave it into the system. It isn't connected with any credit card machine.

Hi all! My name is Christine Hill, and in August I'll wrap up two years of Americorps service at Bike Recycle Vermont<http://www.localmotion.org/programs/bikerecycle/>, a non-profit bike shop in Burlington, Vermont that accepts donated bikes, refurbishes them, and provides them to low-income Vermonters. I've learned so much as the assistant manager of our shop in the past two years and I've continuously drawn energy and inspiration from the work we do here. After 5 years in Vermont, I'm looking for a change in scenery but would love to work in a similar setting. (Physically) small bike shops/spaces?

hey all, a friend of mine is doing a story on bike shops that are under 500 square feet. he's primarily focused on retail oriented shops, but when he put the call out on facebook, of course i thought some of you and your lots of things happening in space that shouldn't physically be possible. of course he can't cover every small shop, but i'm looking for suggestions from you all for shops who have been around a while (longer than a couple years, i'd say) and are tiny physical spaces. borrowed space (ie, from a school or church, etc) is fine, as long as it's small. so, any ideas? thanks, and everyone who's at bike!bike! this weekend, give each other big hugs from me.

'Youth Mechanics' analytical thinking skills program

Hello all, I've recently finished a 10-week pilot for an analytical thinking skills program using bicycle repair as a teaching medium. In short, the program supposes that the subjects taught in school -- math, literature, etc -- are just arbitrary avenues to the same sort of cognitive processes that could be reached though handskills and mechanicship. In other words, bike repair to become a critical, thinking person. Kitchen Start-UP in Pasadena, CA

Hello, I am a student at Pasadena City College and developer of a new, student-led program called iBike PCC. The intent of our program is to encourage our students to choose cycling as a means of transportation. We are currently looking to establish a bicycle "kitchen" on campus for both student and community use. We want to provide essential tools, assisted maintenance, and a low cost supply of parts to students, and members of the community. It is nearing the end of our semester, and we have until the 15th of June to spend 12,000 dollars left in our budget. We are looking to purchase the right kind of equipment for a space about 30ft x 20ft or smaller, and would like to have at least four work stations. We do not currently have a wholesale license, but we do have the ability to pay an invoice made out to our Associated Students Pasadena City College, Sustainability Committee. New Bike Co-op in Martin, TN

I started the Martin Bike Co-op and Repair in a detached garage 5 months ago. Martin is a small town with a population of 10,000 residents, and has the University of Tennessee at Martin with a student population of 8,000 students. The Co-op is a hybrid concept run out of my garage as both a bike repair shop and a bike co-op. So far, the bike repair business has been about 80% of the work. The population here is just not large enough to support a free standing bike co-op. My bike co-op is fairly well equipped with bike tools I accumulated before moving to Martin last Sept. My bike shop is the only bike repair service in town, and so I have had a good volume of bike repairs this past spring. I am a community partner with the UTM campus Institute for Civic Engagement, and the GEARS (Green Energy and Renewables Society). GEARS is interested in getting a bike share program started on campus, and I will support them in any way I can to get that started. UT at Knoxville has started a bike share program and they have some electric assist bikes in their fleet of bikes. I am a do it all sort of Co-op/Bike Shop..I do repairs, community programs, organize bike rides, work with UTM faculty and students on any bike issues, repair bikes for the UTM campus police, ride in parades..anything bike related I do. I get bikes donated from the UTM Recycling program and I buy low cost bikes for parts to use on department store bike repairs. The only place in town to buy a new bike is at WalMart, and I am the only place in town to do repairs to bikes. I do get some higher end bikes to repair from UTM faculty that go out of town to buy a new bike. The area is one of the poorer areas in the U.S. It is not the poorest, as that would be further south of us. So my market is focused on the lower cost bikes and used bikes, although there are a good number of people riding hybrid bikes that they purchased out of town at a bike shop about 60 miles away. I would be interested in attending any gatherings of Bike Co-op folks in the mid-south, if there are any. Currently I buy my new bike parts and supplies from a bike shop 60 miles away. I am wondering if there are any online bike parts dealers that sell to Bike co-ops. I don't buy enough to be able to use QBP or any of the other larger wholesalers. Thanks.
