Hi Jonathan, Carolyn forwarded this over to me, since she thought this sounded like a membership question. It's been a while since you and I have connected-hope you are doing well. The Advocacy Advance Program was created to draw down federal funding to be spent on biking and walking, so it would be crucial to ensure that an application addresses drawing down federal funding. Any Alliance and League member is welcomed to apply for such funding. With the increasing number of community bike shops (or like organizations) playing an advocacy role in their community, there is definite potential in this area. I don't personally handle the Advocacy Advance Program and Grants, but I have copied Brighid O'Keane, our Advocacy Advance Program Manager, on this email so that you and her can connect to discuss further. I would also like to add that the Alliance for Biking & Walking, in response to member requests from community bikeshops and like organizations, is also investigating other opportunities of better ways to serve such organizations. community bike shops need bikable roads

Fellow community shops, We have been working on a good bikable community since our inception in 1996. We could not in good conscious work on getting more people on bikes without working on city design and street issues. We have had success: changing 4-lane roads to 3-lane roads and putting in bike lanes in the reclaimed space, getting _single lane_ roundabouts instead of stop lights, narrowing 12' travel lanes to 10' which often helps get in bike lanes, changing parking lanes to bike lanes, connecting urban trails and increasing transit for instance. Current projects include getting a downtown 'piazza' or car-free plaza, switching asphalt to pine resin or other alternative for bike walk trails, and- the hardest- working to stop a couple major roadway expansions and instead going with bike/walk/transit solutions. Shop software

Hey folks, for those that are interested I've made some of the first steps in creating a suite of utilities that can be used for all the stuff we need to do on a daily basis. As of right now, I've created some Drupal modules that can be used to administer users and sales, so if you're by chance currently running Drupal 7 and are in need of this kind of thing, then you can probably start getting it set up soon. Eventually I'll be developing this so it can be used on any web site and likely offline too and there will be much more functionality than just shop administration. You can check out the demo version here: test.bikeroot.ca/members/shop. If you want to try it out you'll need to create a fake account, this is only because the system sends automatic emails on registration and purchases which are all directed your account in the demo. There's probably some bugs in there so you'd be doing me a favour by trying it out and giving me feedback if you feel like it. I'm hoping for late spring to be able to release something with basic functionality that can be used by anyone that needs it; that might be optimistic however. At that point I'll hopefully be able to reconnect with some of the developers that met concerning this in San Marcos for help expanding its functionality. .godwin

Start-up Shop Tool/supply Lists?

Hey all, Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul, MN has become a growing resource for supporting small start-up bike repair programs at schools, community centers, and now potentially the (basement of the) Science Museum of Minnesota! Does anybody have any lists of tools/supplies that provide solid starting direction for a new program? My vision is to have a list of recommended tools that a start-up space might purchase (using wholesale costs) for $1,000 and also a $3,000 or $5,000 level (including more benches, truing stands, etc). This would be very useful for small to medium grant applications without having to reinvent the wheel each time. If anyone has any resources they're generated, I'd welcome the opportunity to review and use it! Seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker for new BNB Project in Uganda Bikes Not Bombs is partnering with St. Mary's Lacor Hospital to launch a new project in Amuru, Northern Uganda to provide bicycles to 300 village health workers. The goal is to improve the health workers' efficiency and productivity in providing health services to people in rural areas of Amuru, with the hope of positively impacting the overall health outcomes in Amuru. In order to do this we must establish the necessary bicycle repair infrastructure in Amuru, train the village health workers in bicycle mechanics, refurbish the bicycles, and prepare the Amuru Village Health Team to sustain the project long-term. Bikes Not Bombs is seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker to help implement this new project in Amuru for a period of 6-9 months starting in January 2012. Winter shut down?

The Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop in Lexington KY has been up and running solidly since last Nov. Our question is, how many shops shut down or tweak their hours during the cold weather months? We do not anticipate closing completely because our shop is used by so many, but we do need to get some rest for the volunteers and work on some education classes. Currently we are open Tuesday 8-11 pm Thursday 6-9 pm Sunday 1-5 pm Currently, thinking about staying open on Sundays during the winter but making Tuesday and education night and then closing on Thursday till spring when we can start to build up a lot of sale bikes. Examples of business plans?

Hi folks- I'm the communication coordinator for the Alliance for Biking & Walking, a coalition of more than 185 state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. The majority of our member organizations are of the standard advocacy model (bike safety classes, encouragement programs, state/local lobbying, policy work, etc) — but there's incredible interest in the energy, power and equity of community bike shops / earn-a-bike / recycle-a-bicycle programs. Several advocates have recently asked me if there are any examples of community bike shop "business plans" that might serve as inspiration or models for, say, a community bike shop in her area of Mississippi. Insurance

I am the president of _www.BikesForTykes.org_ (http://www.BikesForTykes.org) a children's program that refurbishes old bikes into near new condition and then gives them to the underprivileged kids in our area. Even though we are the oldest continuous bike program in the US, we still encounter problems. My question is how most of you handle shop liability and event liability? I see a lot of posting about having kids work on their bikes, however the 'hold not responsible' forms you have people sign just will not do it in a court of law. The only close to 'protected' way is to have shop and event liability through an insurance company and get your 'not hold responsible' forms signed. Even then it is not a 'sure thing'. It all depends on the judge. Has anyone run this by an attorney? What did he/she have to say and where do you get the insurance from? One injury to a child and a parent out to make an example out of any of us and your program is toast!!! I have not got the best answer so I am asking all of you what you have done. Women's Shop Night

Hello Think Tank Collective! We at Mobo are working on trying to get more women to participate in our women's open shop night. We normally have 1 or 2 women or those who gender identify as female come in. Women's night is held once a month, although we are piloting a 2nd day on a weekend to see if we can get more women in. Some of this is a response to request from members to have more weekend shop and a desire to see another women's night. Do you have a lot of attendance at women's open shop (if you have one?) What are some ways that you've reached out to the women riders in your communities? Thank you! Reddit offering free ad space to nonprofits

Reddit, a fairly popular online forum/community, is offering $100 in ad credit to nonprofits. They have message boards covering most imaginable topics, including many cycling-related boards (go to http://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling, see list on the right side) and boards for most cities. I'm pretty sure you can set your ads to run on the boards of your choice. It might be helpful if you're looking for a few small donations or more Facebook likes or general buzz for your org. Bike Collective Network at Interbike

The Bike Collective Network will be in booth "L4" (http://ib.goexposoftware.com/2010/goExpo/floorPlan/viewFloorPlan.php) this year for Interbike. Yeah, we got bumped. But it will still be fun. It is that time of year again, where we pack rooms at Circus Circus, ride in crazy alley cat races, attend the NBDA seminars for non-profit applicable nuggets of info, check out the cycling industry's 2011 lines, and... then there are the things that stay in Vegas. A group will be driving out from Salt Lake City, Utah on the 21st. If you are planning on going, need help with badges, rooms, etc.,... please let me know offlist. Examples of successful flyers?

Hi all! My collective is planning to make 8-1/2 x 11" (or similar size) flyer to post on public bulletin boards and publicize that we collect bicycles and put them to good use. I know at least some other bike collectives use flyers, and it'd be super helpful to see what works and what doesn't in terms of design and what we should say. Stolen and Suspicious bikes

I'd like to know what policies shops have in regards to bicycles of suspicious origin (possibly stolen). Here at the bike dump we have a strict policy to not trade or buy bikes. But, we also don't ask or check about nice bikes found in alleys, garbage, donated, or pulled out of the river. We don't usually say anything when someone comes in with a nice bike to fix missing the back wheel and seatpost, or tries to sell a Trek 8000 for $20. I know there are lots of stolen bike registries out there, but do any of the co-ops take the time to check? What do you say when someone brings a bike to fix that was likely stolen at some point? Do you ask for or record serial numbers? Obviously, asking where they got the bike from based on profile alone is a really shitty thing to do. Stopping scruffy looking native guys for questioning because they are riding a nice bike is the sort of thing the asshole cops do. Graham at the bike dump in Winnipeg
