Tips for Building a Bike Blender?

Hey bike buds, So, it turns out people love bike blenders, and over the last couple weeks we've had a bunch of requests for them at the Mechanical Gardens. Have you made a bike blender? What worked and what didn't? We're looking to build something simple and functional, preferably with no/minimal welding. Any recommendations, instructions, and/or photos would be much appreciated! Shop repair stands

Hello everyone. This email is for asking on reocmendations on repair stands. Since you have been uploading the DIY ones we have some odeas on doing some to move around but on the shop we have been using a portable plastic repair stand and we have decided on buying a shop one that might last longer and will make it easier to fix bikes (the plastic ones usually dont support heavy bikes and we have suffer some accidents with bike moving down the stand) Some time bak we looked at teh park tool deluxe stand and now that we might be able to purchase it we find out that the base is not included and that costs $300 more. So, any recomendations on a shop stand, not the plastic ones, that we can buy with $400 us dollars? Or have you made your own base to put the park tool stand that has worked? Thanks R.

Incentivizing regular shifts in volunteer run shops!

Hey Folks! We at Kickstand community Bike Shop in East Vancouver have had ongoing challenges with staying open for all our our regular shop hours because we sometimes do not have enough volunteers signed up to volunteer to facilitate our volunteer-run shop on a given day. Does anyone have strategies for encouraging volunteer commitment and regular shifts so that we can reliably open for our posted hours? Obviously, transitioning to having paid staff is one pathway, though there are probably many other alternatives that would meet our needs and encourage community participation in keeping the space open. Re Shop Repair stands

We have bought several PRS 2.2 stands after having used first cheap chinese stands then portable Park Tool stands which we still use for events or when we have lots of volunteers. We also have a double headed Unior stand but this is not as well made as the PRS2.2 If you are not in a hurry look for a used PRS 2.2. We bought our first one on Gumtree which is our local version of craigslist. It was over 15 years old and the only sign of wear was on the rubber grips which are replaceable. PRS2.2 are basically volunteer proof as everything is heavy duty metal. We bought half inch plate and had the dealer bore and counter bore the holes by bringing in the stand as a template. This is important as one of the 4 holes is slightly off centre so that you get correct directional alignment if you are copying the original plates. Cost including drilling was around $100 US and the cost of labour in Australia is higher than the U.S. We like double headed stands as it allows experienced volunteers to continue with a project while also assisting a less experienced volunteer when they need advice. This is a reply to Fabian's question re; Travel equity fundraising a while back. Winnipeg raised over $2000 last year for the travel equity fund through a series of monthly bike builds we did for the 4 months leading up to the B!B! conference. We figured that building & selling some bikes was a lot easier than organizing yet another fundraiser, so once a month The Wrench hosted a friday night beer (byob) pizza (paid for by The WRENCH) and wrenching night. We invited any and all mechanics who wanted to contribute to B!B! organizing in an easy, tangible way to come out and wrench on bikes for a few hours. Over 4 such nights we built and subsequently sold 20 bikes with all the proceeds going directly towards the bikebike travel equity fund. It was a really easy way to plug in folks from the extended mechanic community who wanted to contribute to organizing but not in a "sit in meetings" or "deal with piles of emails" sort of way. Winnipeg is blessed with a pretty good stock of donated/salvaged bikes in the summer, so this initiative didn't really "cost" The WRENCH aside from paying for any required consumables (cables, housing, lube) and some cheap pizza once a month. And if we build them, they tend to sell without too much effort. I'd recommend this method to any shops who might want to contribute to raising some $$$ for this important fund. That said, Winnipeg is laying low this summer, so don't expect another 2G coming from us! Sorry! Lookin forward to LA! Creating a think tank

Organizing Small Parts Better

For really small items such as bolts I like draws with the name of the bolt say M6 and a sample on the front and running the draws of each item down smallest to largest size so M$ down to M8 so volunteers get a fell after a while for the size they need. For larger parts such as brake blocks I like to see all the brake stuff or gear stuff together. We use the kind of removable boxes that clip on to a wall bracket with the name of the item on the box and on the wall where it goes. The advantage of these is that you can see in to the boxes when standing back and you can remove the box to sort item. I think if you have too many items to fit in a draw you need to cull the stuff in the worst condition or it just makes finding the good stuff harder. We get volunteers to do this with the more experienced helping the newer as a way of learning about the relative value of parts. Geoff Smart Back2Bikes Port Melbourne

Welding discussion

Hi guys, I've been wondering about welding. I'm an ok welder. I can get the job done. I'm ok when things are set up for me in a class setting, but haven't worked outside that; and standing in big stores trying to figure out what gear to buy really confuses me. I do have access to sheds and experienced friends who would support me; and in my community setting if I was pretty confident with setting that up I'd probably get good support (especially if I was doing something that could benefit everyone). When I stared thinking about it, there's a million questions around welding set up I'd like to ask the ThinkTank. Do you think you could help me answer these? Questions I have: -Set up and materials needed, -Hardware- i.e. buildings, power input, flooring, etc -Preferences for different materials or machines -Experience- show and tell of really good bike shop welding; especially any frames anyone has built they're proud of All much appreciated guys! Organizing Small Parts Better

Hey pals, what are your good ways of organizing the small parts in your shop? I don't mean "do you put them in little bitty parts drawers or bins," but more "if so, how do you organize those drawers or bins?" At the Mechanical Gardens, as the small parts get more *sorted *they also get less *organized*. It just becomes static: fifty teeny drawers of small parts or whatever means that people who don't know just what their part is called or looks like, or just where to look for it, are SOL. No bueno. Do you do something clever to head this off? Organize small parts by bike system, by commonly accessed parts versus parts-of-components (like jockey wheels, star nuts, or seatpost tops), or some other way? Literature on womens+bikes

Hello everyone! We have been doing some research on non-academic and academic literature on how there are different types on mobility inside cities and those differences are also, or should be, gendered (not into the idea of the binomial definition of gender but the majority of info we have found approaches that way) ans also on how perceptions/infrastructure mold the mobility patrons on women and men*. Not so surprising we have found the bast majority of urban plans, bike lanes and even bike "activism" all around the globe keeps repeating the no consideration/misogynist way to do-it, the no consideration on reproductive work (that not only women do, but in bast majority the do). Sooooo, I write this email for 2 reasons: 1-Ask, if you have any, for literature that approaches mobility with a "gender perspective" that can or cannot include this on the text but, you know that doesn't keep talking of men as the norm when creating new bus lanes or bike lanes etc. 2- If anyone wants to open a support/study/awesome group to discuss this things (will be awesome), let me know! Rags storage (new and used)

Hi all, Our rag storage situation could use some improvement at the Somerville Bike Kitchen in MA. Just wondering how folks are currently storing clean rags and then taking care of used rags? Is there some good, cheap, nifty way to store them so that they are easily available and take up the least amount of room and don't end up going everywhere? Really just looking for pictures or descriptions of how you folks are managing your rags... Maybe i'm over-thinking this and just a big bin works... but our space is small and we have limited floor space.. Thanks, Luis ps - I wanted to send a shout-out to the austin yellow bike project. When I was there a year or so ago, I attended one of their meetings and thought that their approach to making rags was pretty smart. At the start of the meeting, they hand out scissors and tshirts to the folks seated at the meeting and cut up rags while the meeting is going on - seemed a great way to multi-task.

Here's ours. Tempe is a high theft environment, so everything is welded on. We've never been able to keep a pump out there for more than two weeks (even the bike fixtation high security one). Hello all, We're close to launching a new bicycle co-operative at York University, Toronto, ON, Canada! I had some requests to ask the community: 1. I would like to connect with the managers of other University/college campus based bicycle co-ops to discuss practices and business models, go over past decisions made to get to where they are now. 2. Are there any tool bench designs that are favorites? I really like the tool benches @ Charlie's in Toronto, but would like to see other examples of well thought out tool benches. 3. Could we look at examples of shop layouts? Has any co-operative made a floor-map with the furnishings placement on it? We have plans as well to share! 3. Do creature comforts matter? I wanted to be double sure. Normally I would not hesitate myself to say A/C is definitely not needed at first, but for context we are moving from a hidden closet in terms of operations into a 1500+ sq ft. new storefront. We have big glass windows that face east, which means that by 10 am the place is a broiler. Installing an A/C system feels like the right thing to do.... Bike Collective VS. Simply giving away bikes

Alright friends, I am reaching out for some resources.. I have a meeting soon with a guy who has an organization which gives away bikes. "Second Chance Bikes" Now, I don't disagree with giving people bikes... but I think the bike collective model (like earn-a-bike) is more empowering and sustainable long-term. And of course encourages safer riding, all while building community... Got any resources (or data) that can help support my/our position? I am a bit nervous as my meeting is with an older white male and I'm a younger female. He's already mansplained me once before. Bikes! I am super excited to post to this list that Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles, based in Ithaca, New York, is hiring for a new part time position! I expect it won't be enough hours to persuade people to move from say, Beijing or Barcelona, but maybe Montreal or Syracuse ;) And who knows - maybe we'll find out someone nearer to our town has been lurking on this list all along. About RIBs: Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles is a thirty year-old program of the Southside Community center focused on a facilitated free and open shop model. We do require a donation for parts, which is pay-what-you-want. Our focus is on empowerment, via skill building, confidence building and access to transportation. We serve an extremely wide array of people in our local population, from people in the reentry process from incarceration, college students pursuing PHDs, local homeless, families of all social classes, and immigrants. About The Southside Community Center: Established in 1938, the SsCC is one of the nation's oldest African American community organizations, tracing its roots back to the efforts of a small women's club 1927. Since it's founding, it has nurtured a variety of programs designed to "affirm, empower, and foster the development of self pride among the African-American citizens of greater Ithaca..." About Ithaca: Home to four higher education institutions including Cornell University, Ithaca has a resilient cycling community and a long tradition of political and social awareness. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Position Title: Educator Mechanic, Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles Reporting To: Nydia Blas, Executive Director, Southside Community Center, Nicholas Desystemizer, Director, Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles Compensation: $15.11/hour, 15 hours/week Benefits: paid vacation and sick leave Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles is a program of the Southside Community Center and a skillsharing community bicycle workshop where anyone can come in and work on their bikes, whether to repair, build, or simply maintain, free of cost (except parts). For almost thirty years, RIBs has been a fun and empowering space where people learn and help one another while connecting with liberating and sustainable technology. This position is seasonal, ending October 31, with the possibility for scaled back hours over Winter. In season, it will be 15hrs/week(a)$15.11/hr, Saturday and Sunday from 12:30pm until 5:30pm, and Thursday 6pm-close. The position will be completely responsible for Thursdays, but will share the day with the Director from 2pm-5:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. The position may require attending weekly hour-long staff meetings, paid at the normal rate. The applicant does not have to be mechanically proficient at the time of interview, but they do need to have a passion for learning mechanical skills such that they will eventually develop professional skills. This position offers training which will precede assumption of regular hours, and will consist of shadowing by the Director and Consulting Director on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Other days necessary for training may be possible. All training will be paid at the working rate. The primary skill the applicant must demonstrate at the time of interview is the ability to work with people in an encouraging, patient, positive, tolerant, and educational capacity while maintaining awareness of all projects and people in the space. Ability to confront and resolve conflict in a graceful and healthy manner (as far as possible) is also necessary. Acceptance of and interest in human diversity is essential. People with experience maintaining cohesion, balance, positivity, and strength in highly populated communities are encouraged to apply. Duty is to facilitate open shop hours as follows: -Maintain an organized space -Facilitate workflows and ongoing projects -Maintain awareness of multiple participants, their situations, and their projects -Teach repair skills to participants -Ensure the proper use of tools and space to minimize breakage, wear, and damage -Cultivate quality for all new and used bikes and hardware leaving the shop -Monitor and enforce safety standards for bikes leaving the shop -Greet and orient new participants -Coordinate volunteers -Process bike donations -Collect and secure monetary donations -Perform necessary record keeping and reporting for all participants and (if closing) monetary streams -Maintain RIBs as as a safer and anti-oppressive space -Observe and apply in practice the mission statements of RIBs and SsCC -Assist the Director and Consulting Director as needed This position must be filled as soon as possible, and therefore candidates will be interviewed in the order they apply until the position has been filled. Bike!Bike! Los Angeles - Travel Equity

Hello Everyone, Im Fabian W. and Im a member of the Bike!Bike! 2018 Los Angeles organizing committee. One of my specific tasks is to promote and facilitate participation in our event by Mexican, Central American and South American bike groups. There are two main components to this effort: Promote the event among groups in those regions. Im already reaching out to many across the region but if you know of any specific ones I would really appreciate the contact information. Fundraise for our travel equity program. Participation by south-of-the-US Border groups is very difficult because of the cost of visas and airfare. Jim Mayerstein from Mexico has shared with me some important background information about travel equity funding in previous Bike!Bike! gatherings starting with Detroit. Jim mentioned that a couple of the collectives from Canada were able to do significant funding towards this (Bike Sauce from Toronto and Our Community Bikes from Vancouver). The Los Angeles Bike!Bike! organizing committee is going to do as much funding for this as possible but any contributions or ideas from the rest of the BikeCollectives community would be very appreciated. We have started a crowd funding site at: https://bikebike2018.raisely.com/ . Any contributions there would help give momentum to that effort. Wheel management

We have a lot of wheels on hand, some ready to go, others needing bearings or truing, and still others piled up. We hang some from ceiling using hooks, and have tried a rack to hold them. The problem comes when people just set wheels on the floor in front of the rack, or pile them in. We need to find an efficient way to store them. We're in the UK, slightly different rules, but ensure any bikes sold have working bell, wheel reflectors (clear or orange), white front reflector and red rear reflector. No need for this but it's what you'd expect from a new bike and we do it for best practise. During popups where we check peoples bikes, we not whether they have these too...pointing out why they're added to new bikes, though not demanding they go get them fitted (by us or anyone else) if absent. Hi all, I'm new to the Think Tank, though I've been around bike coops and advocacy for years. I searched the archives but didn't find anything relevant to my question... Do any of you have a policy about whether and which reflectors (or lights) must be installed on a bike that leaves your shop? Has your coop had a discussion about it? I'd like to hear from those groups who've considered the question, to provide input for our own discussion on it. Thanks in advance! -Ann

Hey everyone! I'm working on the AMS Bike Co-op's 2nd episode of Tire Pop! <http://www.citr.ca/radio/tire-pop/>, the radio show where we talk bikes and spin cassettes. But tbr the cassettes we spin have mostly all been converted to digital for better or worse 😵 Is anyone available next week to chat on the phone about being a Bike!Bike! organizer of the past? Hey guys, Thanks so much for all the great info and ideas I've been harvesting so much from everyone's contributions to these threads. We're running a workshop around positive consent during our bicycle festival which we want to be fun and accessible: i.e. not preachy or confessional. We had thought that we'd do a couple of mechanical skills: puncture repair and wheel truing in the space; but couple this with some discussion around consent. But it needs to be safe for people who are there. We're bike mechanics, not therapists. So had thought of a game involving bike puns (spinning out, going for a ride, whatever). So can you share your best bike pun? I'd love some more to add to my collection, so that they might be incorporated into a workshop. Ulick

Has anyone looked into selling bicycles consignment at their shops? Or looked into it? I'd love to hear what successes, issues, pitfalls, and/or barriers people have ran into. We're brainstorming some ideas that would allow members (BBP has a yearly membership program that gives folks unlimited shop time for a year) to sell bicycles consignment through BBP. Ride On!
