More details here! <http://ohiocitycycles.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21&I…> As part of our currently underway, grant-funded strategic planning process, we've decided to suspend and likely phase out the loaner bike/parts system, and prior to that, we made the decision to make access to our shop and tools public, since we were ALWAYS making exceptions to the 'members only' rule to allow people to work on their own bike with our tools. With regard to shop use, our working policy that will be revamped over the next couple months is that we allow people to check out tools and a stand for $5/hour and we assess fees if they need specific assistance, such as $5 to show a shop user how to install a derailleur. The snafu comes when someone thinks they don't need help but then they do, since we have a finite capacity to assist people with everything else going on. We're currently encouraging appointments during lower traffic times for 'assisted shop use' and otherwise operating on a first-come, first-served basis. We may end up restricting shop use hours in one way or another as we're currently understaffed and don't derive much income from shop use. Regarding the income derived from membership, ours was always fairly low - maybe 2% of our operating budget based on my memory. We're instead planning to shift towards a 'donor level' system. I personally like Bike Depot's system here <http://www.thebikedepot.org/index.php/support/memberships>, though they refer to theirs as membership levels and have 'members only' benefits that we plan to forego, instead encouraging people to give what they can at some predetermined levels, or at their own level, but illustrating at least a theoretical connection between the amount someone contributes and what that amount can support in the context of our programming. We currently have paper release forms which include time out and time returned, but we schedule using a Google calendar and a Google form for sizing information for our "Performance Rentals." We're scaling back our rental program, though, and I would not be surprised if we phase it out or dramatically simplify it. We've historically loaned out bikes for free to members, but we're phasing out membership and I'll be happy to see the end of people borrowing bikes and returning them late/beat up/etc and not doing their share to re-tune them. Also, it will probably mean that we'll sell/let volunteers earn at least some of our coveted rental bikes, and they'll then get used all the time rather than a few times a year. Relatedly, we are phasing out our parts library, as well, which often had similar results: underutilized except for well-meaning but problematic users who kept things out too long or needed to be reminded to return something. Rental Reservation Systems

We're a bike co-op in Moncton, Canada, and are just getting our very first rental bikes into place, and are wondering if anyone has an online booking or reservation system that they absolutely adore? Backlogs

Hello all, Was wondering if any of you had any advice on backlogs and successfully quoting customers when their bike will be done?? We have a combination of repairs/tune-ups, as well as overhauls of bikes people are requesting to purchase from us. So far we have one giant list of bikes that need to get done in order of when people came into the shop and approximately when they desire the bike to be done. Advanced Repair Classes for Adults?

Hey Folks, Here at Neighborhood Bike Works <http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/> we have had a surge of interest in our Adult Repair Classes <http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/programs/adult-bike-repair-classes/> and are considering expanding our offerings in this realm in response. Our current system consists of 4 consecutive 2.5 hour Monday night classes. We cover Flat Fixing, Brake Adjustment and repair, Bearing Adjustment and Repair, and Drive Train Adjustment and Repair for $80. It is taught by either our Board President or our Lead Mechanic, with an alternating Youth Assistant. *Does anyone have 2 tiers of classes, or an advanced class they offer adult participants?* If so, what do you cover? Who teaches (Staff, Volunteer, Board, Youth)? Do you have established curriculum you could share? The only time we have ever had a "tip jar" at Bike Pirates is as the bar at events. The money goes with all the other money from that night - usually a fundraiser for some organization. And we are clear about that if people ask. Occasionally a patron who has a super experience will try to tip the volunteer who helped them and (as far as I know) that money is always just put into out money box with their donation. We have as part of our policy and shop handbook a guideline that no one shall profit from use of our space (mostly out of concern related to patrons using us as a "personal workshop", flipping bikes, etc.) But this also applies to volunteers. Insurance for a free mobile fix-it service

Hi all - [Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I have been unable to access the Think Tank Archives even after logging on, so please forgive the possible duplication of an old topic.] A small group of us is wanting to do some simple repairs and safety checks (fix flats, adjust brakes, recommend needed repairs type of thing) at our local farmers' market. We are not a formal organization of any sort, just a bunch of friends thinking about getting into something larger and more formalized after we see how this goes. What is recommended for any sort of insurance coverage? It would be on public property at a farmers' market. The market has liability insurance, but we would not be a program of the market (if doing so would allow us to be covered, then maybe we should look into that). Sample concerns: - If we touch someone's bike and they roll out into traffic, get hit and claim that it was our bad repair job... - If we "break" their bike while trying to fix it... tip jars at bike collectives

Hey all, How do you guys feel about tip jars? A volunteer at bike farm recently put one out during a shift. I think it's something we as a collective should vote on. Is this a common practice? Have people had conversations about this before? please note this is different than a donation jar which goes to the collective, this is tips for the volunteers. looking for a home for 100 or more bikes

I posted this a month or so ago. I figured i would post it one last time before we find another place for them to go. run a community bike shop in little rock arkansas and i am trying to make space in our shop. We have about 200 or more steel bikes(26,27and 700) we are not utilizing that we are looking to give to another program that could use them. They are mainly old road, cruiser, commuter type bikes. All one would need to due is come pick them up. If anyone is interested please contact us. We want to save these from going to the scrap yard. A group wants to introduce about 100 used bikes for people to use for free in an already ailing, small downtown. Free bikes? What will that do to local, struggling bike businesses? A decade or so ago many places tried what were called "yellow bike" programs (or whatever colour). Basically, paint a bunch of basic low-end bikes in a single colour and put them out for folks to use. I think pretty well every program eventually failed due to theft and misuse. And wikipedia says this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system) "In this type of programme the bicycles are simply released into a city or given area for use by anyone. In some cases, such as a university campus, the bicycles are only designated for use within certain boundaries. Users are expected to leave the bike unlocked in a public area once they reach their destination. Because the bike is not required to be returned to a centralised station, ready availability of such bicycles is rare, and since unlocked bikes may be taken by another user at any time, the original rider is forced to find alternative transport for the return trip. Bicycle sharing programs without locks, user identification, and security deposits have also historically suffered large loss rates from theft and vandalism." So I would suggest that while, as Matt wrote, it has the potential to get more folks interested in bikes, they may also end up despising them if your town starts filling up with the inevitable abandoned and broken bike carcasses. youth and parents/guardians

Hello awesome Think-Tankers, Quick question here from the BF Community Bike Project. A large percentage of the people we work with are at-risk youth in our community. A lot of these youth tend to be under the age of 18, and a good chunk of them are under the age of 14 (down to the age of 8). We're wondering about how strict we should be about allowing youth in here without parents/guardians? We don't want to turn youth away, and we require youth to get waivers signed by their parents... but we also don't want to be liable for anything that could go wrong with having a few young youth running around our premises, youth that aren't part of any specific program we offer. Any thoughts/words of wisdom? I'm working on a project with migrant agricultural workers in British Columbia this summer and I'm looking for reproducible Spanish and Tagalog how-to zines, handouts etc. We've got a good multilingual bicycle anatomy diagram that works well for us. I'm interested in anything you wanna send my way, but I'd be particularly interested in guides to patching flats, riding safely, and anything you've found useful for working with migrant workers/migrant agricultural workers more generally. Mandatory bicycle registration systems-- how to transfer ownership of donated bikes?

Do any of you have to deal with government paperwork for transferring bicycle ownership when repairing or reselling donated bikes? Does anyone else but Hawaii have such a system? If I don't hear from anyone I'll assume it is a system unique to Hawaii. The system is: Mandatory $15 onetime registration fee/tax, if your bike doesn't have a yellow registration sticker on it, police can impound it and give you a $50 ticket. You can get your bike back by paying the $15 tax later. It is really only enforced on homeless people. There are many unregistered bikes around--newcomers and tourists and even long time residents are not complying with the system. To transfer ownership it is $5 and more paperwork. Basically they've been treating bikes like mopeds for many years now. I'm hoping we can do away with that system, and shift to a free registration system like bikeindex.org. We'll see. However, a significant local bike organization, HBL.org, gets funds from the tax for education programs. Thanks for listening! Summer Girls Bike Job

Hi All! I am volunteering with the West End House Girls Camp located in Parsonsfield, Maine to start a bicycling program! The West End House Girls Camp is a 501c3 summer camp for girls aged 7-17 whose mission is to give any girl the opportunity to go to camp regardless of financial means. Their campers are amazing! The bike program will focus on riding and basic bike maintenance skills this year. For the program, we have received donated bikes and tools. Now we just need a staff member with the right experience and a passion for teaching girls how to bike! Question? 200 steel bikes

I run a community bike shop in little rock arkansas and i am trying to make space in our shop. We have about 200ish steel bikes(26,27and 700) we are not utilizing that we are looking to give to another program that could use them. All one would need to due is come pick them up. If anyone is interested please contact us. We want to save these from going to the scrap yard. *Seasonal Bike Shop Mechanic* *Bike Works*, the Seattle bike education and community-focused non-profit, is hiring a *Seasonal* *Mechanic* in our community bike shop. This position is part-time (30 hours / week), temporary, and is paid hourly. The position starts May 1, 2015 and runs through September 30, 2015. *Position Summary**:* The Seasonal Mechanic is responsible for performing bicycle diagnosis and repair, providing customer service, and offering general retail support in our bike shop. Bike Depot is Denver’s Community Bike Center, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that uses a bikes+community+education approach to promoting bicycling. We are a diverse community, unified by the power of the bicycle. Bike Depot is seeking candidates for the exempt, salaried full-time position of Park Hill General Manager (GM). The GM oversees day-to-day operations at Bike Depot’s Park Hill neighborhood location, including retail sales & inventory, service, classes, and in-shop program delivery. The Park Hill GM also assists with outreach efforts, collaborates with the management team to deliver programs off-site, and helps to develop strategic direction for the organization. The Park Hill General Manager reports directly to the Executive Director and manages a year-round staff of four, with up to six seasonal staff and interns. Together, the Park Hill team managed over 10,000 volunteer hours in 2014, assisted with 4200 open workshop repairs, served 2000 clients through the service department, and processed over 3000 donated bikes. We charge for our Shop Classes, which are open to the public/individuals, more info here: http://tinyurl.com/lhr2zej ...and we also charge for groups who hire us - those programs are usually customized for the partner organization and typically are for kids programming. Our base rate for private groups is *$100/hour* for most all of our programming, be it school presentations or what we call "Fixathons". There's some more info here under "For Organizations": http://tinyurl.com/n5sfuqn Most commonly these are programs that are organized with another organization such as what we call CDCs (Community Development Org) around here, schools, neighborhood groups, and sometimes corporate entities for things like teambuilding exercises. We don't explicitly promote our pricing as sliding scale, but we are sometimes flexible for organizations that we value as partners who may not be able to pay the full standard rate, sometimes by having the org's staff or volunteers spend some time volunteering for us. These sorts of programs comprised brought in about $15k for us last year, factoring in that we comp'd about $3500 worth of fees for orgs who couldn't pay our full rate. This is about 10% of our gross income, though these programs take a lot of time to organize and I'd like to see us streamline and standardize our programs more to make them easier to promote, easier to organize, easier to train volunteers for, more profitable, and to give us the capacity to do more of them! We Need Your Recommendations on Children's Bikes

Our local school district wants to purchase about 20 bikes that can be used for children in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. We're looking for recommendations of particular bikes to purchase. We're thinking strong, workhorse bikes that are comfortable and easy to ride and will require little to no maintenance. Almost like a children's bike share bike but without all the weight. Likewise, we're also considering purchasing some Strider bikes [1], to help teach children who don't know how to ride, but we also think that we can probably just take the pedals off of the bikes that we do buy.
