Changing Membership rules

Our bike shop has never paid rent to the church that houses us, in our 12 years of existence. In an attempt to change that, we have just recently changed our membership scheme away from volunteer hours for membership to paid memberships. We're only charging $30/year (and they get a t-shirt). And we're getting lots of new members. But some of the guys who have been around for 3 or 4 years were previously told that they had membership for life due to their many volunteer hours. I don't want to discount what they've done for our shop in the past. But I am also attempting to change some of the culture of our shop, a culture that had become a bit of a boys' club where the old guys got to do exciting stuff like fix bikes and new members got to sort small parts. Super Advanced Planning for Bike Tour To B!B!15 in Guadalajara

Hey ya'll, During B!B!14 I had regrets of not biking to Columbus. I started saying that no mater where 2015's conference was I was going to bike (at least some of the way) there. What looks to be the most feasible to me is flying into Mexico City and biking the 350 miles (563 km) to Guadalajara. That might be around 5-7 days. Anyways I wanted to know if other people have interest in touring to Guadalajara, know of any good routes though that part of Mexico, or can help me plan the best trip I can? I would love to be part of a good sized group because to me biking is a social activity. I know it's early, and we don't even know when it's going to happen, but I just want to start thinking about this now, so next year I'm not planning a trip last minute. -erk nashville, tn

Hi all, During Darrin's session (about making decisions in groups/bike!bike! organizational structure discussion) I volunteered to compile all of the extant material that has been used by and resulted from previous iterations of bike!bike! So, I'm putting out a call. Have you aided in organizing a Bike!Bike! conference? Even if you aren't affiliated with the hosting organization, but helped from afar, I can use documentation of anything that helped you. Any and every document even slightly related is welcome, but specifically I'm sure most people would appreciate the following: successful AND unsuccessful procedures for finding housing (what DIDN'T work might be educational.) organizational methods for assigning housing records regarding loaner bike cataloging, storage, and acquisition web development timelines and records budgets printing costs templates for program/welcome zines food costs large scale food preparation info Overall program guidelines Anything else you think others would be interested to know. Share your shop policies?

Community Bikes in Charlottesville, VA has been operating without any major written shop/board/manager/program policies since it's existence. With a large donation coming we are trying to get some of our ducks in a line and draft a good policy for a functioning shop. We were wondering if any other shops could share some of their policies so that we could see if we are missing any major language or ideas. I know each policy would be unique to each shop, but we need some rough guidance and help to make sure we do this right. Any help is appreciated, including references to think tank discussions that I do not know about. Thank you! -Annie D.

Reno Bike Project is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA as the coordinator for the Major Taylor Program. VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a year-long commitment to serve a community in capacity building and works to change the cycle of poverty. The goal of the Major Taylor Program is to teach participants the skills and knowledge that will lead them to become life-long cyclists. The classes are offered in groups of 10 to provide an in-depth introduction into cycling. Currently classes are offered as a high school PE credit, benefiting participants both physically and academically. Now in its third year the Major Taylor Program has seen consistent growth. Currently partnered with a local charter high school and youth shelter, we aim to expand to two or three more schools in the coming year. Member Duties: AmeriCorps VISTA members will expand the scope Major Taylor Program by: 1. Developing partnerships with staff, administrators, teachers, after school program leaders, at target High Schools to facilitate recruitment of program participants. 2. Further develop existing curriculum to fine tune lesson plans and materials for the program. 3. Recruit volunteers to escort group and training rides. 4. Through the experience of observing and interacting with program participants and under the direction of the staff member conducting the instructional time, improve the overall flow of the class sequence and fine tune materials curriculum. 5. After working knowledge of the program has been gained, engage in the search for funding and bicycle donation process for this program. Using Freehub?

Hi All, I just started trying to use Freehub to track our Shop's members. I thought that I had previously set up an account but wasn't allowed to log in. When I requested the email to reset my password, I received nothing. So, I set up an new account with my personal email address. As I was adding members' info, I got a message in a banner at the top of the screen saying: Your account is pending activation. We've sent an activation email to y***(a)hotmail.com. Check that email account and your spam filter for the activation email. I've checked and rechecked my hotmail account, but I also didn't receive that email. Any thoughts on what to do, and if there is a bug, any hope it will be fixed? I attempted to join GitHub, where it looked like I should report problems, but it is way too technical for me. Cyclcoross is a hybrid between mountain bike and road racing. The sport of cyclocross benefits from our attendance as it creates diversity and new interest that will help it grow. Brakes before gears is also good because while they're both cable systems operating under mostly the same simplified concept (pull the cable, something happens), the brakes are much more simple of a concept and easy to grasp for someone who's not familiar with either. Anybody ordered from PropatchInc for customized patch kits?

At our monthly meeting last night we discussed stocking some customized patch kits branded for our co-op to sell during open shop hours or give away as needed. Propatchinc and Bicycle Promotions seem like the two best retailers online for customized patch kits but Propatch's prices are half of the other stores. Which should be awesome for those of us closely monitoring costs. The expected practice with the IRS (in the US) is that the person who is donating an item declares its value; for items under $500 they do not need any outside appraisal, whereas they do for items valued over $500. So - in the instance of a very high end item that they felt was worth more than $500, it would need to be independently appraised. In most cases regarding items valued significantly less than that, as relative "experts" in the field I am comfortable suggesting a value for a supporter donating a bike (e.g. "I think that trek road bike could be valued at $150"). Survey on starting and sustaining a bike co-op

At the Columbus (Indiana) bike co-op, much of our volunteer base comes from a local corporation with facilities in sister cities around the world. We're interesting in using that volunteer base to help launch co-ops in those cities where a co-op doesn't exist. Information on bikecollectives is really helpful and we will definitely point people there. We have some specific questions about what has been successful, so we've put together a Google survey. alcohol at shop - during meetings - pros and cons?

Hey all, We at Bike Farm recently had a proposal to ban alcohol at our general meetings. We already have a strict policy against alcohol during open shop hours. I'd love to know if other shops have policy around alcohol during meetings or in the shop off hours. Do you have concrete examples of how this effects the shop and it's patrons/volunteers? For those who do not have alcohol, do you notice an difference in time spent hanging out with other collective members, did it change the social dynamic? How does it affect your volunteer pool? For those who have alcohol, do you discuss it often? Do you think it adds or deters from your collective? What is the role of alcohol? The arguments in my mind seem to revolve around safer spaces and regulation. I believe in having as little regulation as possible, but I also respect the need for safer spaces. I wonder if there's a way to not introduce policy while still making an inviting space for all. Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated! -momoko

Earn-a-Bike documentation and reporting?

Hey Folks! When not immersed in planning an Ohio-themed Bike! Bike! fundraiser dance party (!!!), I'm actually doing other for real work. Including the exploration of formats, documentation, and reporting for our youth volunteering and Earn-a-Bike programs. Here in British Columbia, high school students are required to complete something like 30 hours of work experience (ie free labour) to graduate, and we get a lot of youth completing this requirement at our shops. We also run pretty informal Earn-a-Bike programs for youth who are in unconventional education settings, accessing social services, in alternative programs, or can't access our in-school programming for any variety of reasons. Lots of these kids are really focused on getting a job, but we can rarely accommodate that. I'm in the process of creating a checklist/worksheet of mechanical and interpersonal skills acquired by youth as they volunteer in our spaces. The idea is that it would include gradients of skill, becoming increasingly more complex as time goes on. It would be used to guide their time in the shop, and also document what they've learned. It would be the youth's responsibility to fill the checklist out over time and have staff sign off on it, and when it's completed, we would write them a letter of recommendation to be used in applying for jobs, school, whateva. So....do yall have anything like this in place? Or any other relevant Earn-a-Bike or alternative youth programming materials I can creep and reap? SEND THEM TO ME! Thanks buddiez! Lauren @ OCB

Disabling frames to be scrapped?

Our shop recently changed our procedure regarding scrap bikes: any donated bikes that we conclude we will scrap rather than rehab & redistribute are now disabled by cutting the frame of the bike. Recently, some donated bike that had been put in our scrap pile appeared on Craigslist. We had two concerns: first, that donors would be unhappy that their donations were being sold by another party, and second that we could develop a reputation as a source of scrap bikes to be picked and sold elsewhere (and usually those bikes were beyond safe repair). I'd like to hear other perspectives. Is controlling the use of donated bikes (to maintain the integrity of a donation as well as the safety of bikes coming through the shop) worth disabling a bike that might otherwise be reused downstream? I'm working with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and Neighborhood Bike Works to create a curriculum toolkit for a month-long youth ride club. We'd love to hear from everyone with youth ride clubs (or even adult programs, if they're not endurance training-based), and we're especially interested in projects concerned with environmental stewardship. Do you have any sort of curriculum materials for anything in these areas? I'd love to see comprehensive curriculum, but even week-by-week topics/bullet points would be really helpful. Announcing: Peterborough Youth Bike Summit

Greetings from up north in Peterborough, Ontario! I am writing to announce Peterborough is gearing up to host its first ever Youth Bike Summit. The summit theme is "People Powered! DIY Bicycle Friendly Communities", and the event is scheduled to occur on October 4, 2014. The summit will feature youth-lead workshops and discussions, a DIY bike maker's space, bike maintenance courses, and youth advocacy opportunities. The summit will run concurrently with our 4th annual Peterborough and the Kawarthas Cycling Summit, but the Youth Bike Summit will be entirely youth-lead and youth-oriented. We are currently seeking workshop facilitators, presenters, and maker's space contributors. A call for proposals is attached to this email, and we gladly accept out of town proposals. We have a small budget to help cover speaker costs, and are happy to help arrange billet in Peterborough if your presentation is selected. If any young people from your respective organizations are interested in attending, the summit registration is FREE, and we would love to have you! :) Don't hesitate to contact me with questions or workshop proposals. San Diego's Bikes del Pueblo needs your help!

Hello! We are Bikes del Pueblo, San Diego's bike kitchen! We've been operating since 2008 from member's garages and basements, doing clinics and workshops with a lot of local organizations, and have been present at our Farmer's Market every Saturday since 4 years! We also went to Bici!Bici! in Oakland last year and many of our members have visited and been inspired by other Bike Kitchen in the US and other countries. Now we want to get a permanent workspace so we could be open more days, do more workshops, accommodate more people at the same time, store more donations, etc... I am sure you know how having a space is important for a bike kitchen! We started an online crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bikes-del-pueblo/x/8096365 The goal is to raise $10,000 to secure 6 months of rent, cover some moving expenses and have a reserve for rainy days! Kids and shifting: Tips on how to teach

Later this month, the Des Moines Bicycle Collective will sponsor our fifth annual Bike Camp for kids at an inner-city YMCA. The week-long camp is generally a highlight of the year. Okay, one exception: Gears are our friends, but this has been a challenging message to get through to some kids. The entire notion of shifting and anticipating a shift seems beyond what some middle-school kids can get their heads around. And, those lousy, unreliable grip shift systems on entry-level bikes don’t make it any easier. What is working in your community for instruction tips? I almost hate to do this, but I’m ready to ride up a moderate hill with each kid to make sure they understand how helpful gears can be. I welcome your suggestions. Mucho thanks!
