Starting a School Bike Bus/Train

I was wondering if any of your organizations had already undertaken such a project and had information or suggestions they'd be willing to share. Thanks for the replies. That is helpful. However, I guess I'm still not clear whether e-bike conversions we do at the shop (rather than club rides with rider owned e-bikes) would be covered by general liability insurance. Does anyone have any further insights? Hello all, We are trying to determine if we need insurance (beyond general liability) to cover e-bike conversions on used bikes. Not totally sure if general liability insurance would cover this and I assume it may depend on the carrier. I'm also not totally clear why there would be any difference between this and a normal refurbished bike we sell, in terms of liability. Any insights would be appreciated! I thought this was a virtual conference!* Yep. It's a virtual conference, but the website was designed for in-person events. (-: *What time of day is the conference?* We will try to schedule events at various times so they're available to people with different schedules and in different time zones. *Why are you using Zoom/Discord?* We chose to prioritize Bike!Bike!'s tradition of Language Justice. We would love to use platforms that are open source and end-to-end encrypted, but we aren't aware of any open source software or end-to-end encrypted platforms with simultaneous interpretation features in the same league as Zoom. Discord has good machine translation features and a much friendlier user interface than any of the alternatives we have found. Hi there, Not shop related, but I thought it was worth a try. London Cycle Link has a group working on protocols for marshaling and group rides. So far it's a bit heavy on legal/rules of the road stuff, and a bit light on best practices and tips for organizing rides and marshaling. Does anyone have a document or resource they could share? Hello! Cycles of Change in Oakland Ca is hiring a program coordinator for our Drive Your Bike program, 30-35 hours at $23.50. DYB brings one day bike rodeos and a multi-day curriculum to public schools all over Alameda County. Cycles of Change hosts other programs, such as a community shop, bike clubs, and an adult bike class called Upcycle. DYB coordinator would work with 1.5 other coordinators to staff and train, adjust curriculum for school needs, and work with our funders in the county and schools. 2/3 of the time would be coordinating, and 1/3 would be in an admin committee for our staff collective. 100% of interest survey respondents said YES to attending an online Bike!Bike! Everywhere! 2021. It's going to happen. An organization team is coalescing. In the past there have been two types of Bike!Bike!: classic and regional. I am delighted to let you all know that there is now a third type of option available for Bike!Bike!. Bike!Bike! Everywhere!! *DATES* *Registration signups and workshop proposals *are open from *Saturday May 15 - Saturday September 4, 2021. * (If you're a procrastinator, you could make a note on your calendar to celebrate my July 21 birthday with me by filling out the form weeks before the deadline!) *Bike!Bike! Hey all, This morning I find myself really missing my bike bike friends. I wasn't able to make the one in 2019 and then, well, 2020 was a no go. Any news on plans for 2021? Virtual? we could have it be really informal. Use the BikeBike website to post a topic and instead of a location, it would be a zoom room. Support Fired Blackstone Bikes Mechanics!

http://bit.ly/BBWfund For nearly 20 years, Blackstone Bicycle Works has been more than a place to buy a bike or get a flat fixed. From helping customers get sized for their first bike to teaching young people how to build their own bikes, the mechanics at Blackstone have been an integral part of the cycling community and the South Side. Through the pandemic, as interest in cycling surged and the need for safe transportation grew, the mechanics worked through it all to meet our communities’ need for transportation. Just after Christmas, Experimental Station leadership decided to close the shop indefinitely, with only a week’s notice. In January 2021, the three remaining staff mechanics were laid off! Since Josh, Kevin, and Nana were laid off, those who have applied have been denied unemployment. We are asking our communities for monetary support to cover their lost wages. All funds raised will be split between the three mechanics who were laid off! Blackstone Bicycle Works is a community bike shop and youth program based out of the Experimental Station in Woodlawn. It’s been a beloved part of Chicago’s cycling community for decades, and many from the program have had deep and long relationships with the community and the neighborhood. The wide network of alumni and former staff have gone on to start bike shops, programs, and organizing efforts. Too often, though, Blackstone Bicycle Works staff have been treated disposably. I have been learning a lot about language justice recently. A lot of this is new to me because as a motor minimalist, Bike!Bike! has always been too far away for me to attend. I love it! But it's also a surprise because I never see it on the Think Tank. What would bringing language justice to the Think Tank look like? Hi all, I think I got everyone who emailed me and/or the list and asked for an update (except for one person who seemed interested in updating it themself). If I haven't gotten to your suggested edits yet, it's because I missed them. But I think that's everyone! Thanks everyone for helping with the Great Directory Update of 2021! Angel PS - Darin keeps chugging away at the Great Wiki Update of 2021. My favorite update so far is that it now forces secure https pages. Darin says the most useful is the visual editor (so you don't have to edit using wiki code unless you want to).

Blackstone Bicycle Works and the Experimental Station Union

Hi all, Some of you might have heard that us workers at Experimental Station recently unionized! The union includes mechanics and workers from Blackstone Bicycle Works, a beloved youth program bike shop on Chicago's South Side! Unfortunately, rather than listen to the support of an overwhelming majority of staff, tenants, elected officials, and community members and recognize our union, our Board is trying to union bust ([here's an email we sent out to supporters](https://mailchi.mp/2639ff8e740d/the-es-union-needs-your-support)). Even more unfortunate, Blackstone is in a pretty bad spot—all the mechanics have been fired or left within the past few months, so all the solidarity we can get is really really appreciated. The folk in question average very low mechanical skills, and many are fairly new to each other. (1) Do you have activities / syllabi / suggestions for mechanical crash-course stuff that's good for this scenario? (2) Do you have activities / suggestions / prompts for the more camp counselor style parts of this -- either in the metaphoric "trust falls" realm, or in terms of building a collective social analysis, or in terms of establishing great practices for volunteers in the space. The Boise Bicycle Project seeks team mechanics to refurbish bicycles, complete bicycle repair and offer bicycle education to our patrons. Team mechanics work with the operations manager and lead mechanic to reach impact goals in making SAFE, RELIABLE, SERVICEABLE, AFFORDABLE and FUN bicycles available to the community in need. At this time, we are seeking mechanics with 2+ years experience in a professional bicycle shop and/or a professional certification like a diploma from United Bicycle Institute or similar. Job Responsibilities Refurbish donated bicycles (Build Safe, Reliable, Serviceable, Affordable and Fun Bicycles) - 75% of time in role. Have strong mechanical and diagnostic skills centered around working on bicycles of all makes and conditions. Refurbish donated bicycles in accordance with Boise Bicycle Project standards. Perform bicycle safety checks. Diagnose mechanical issues. DIY Repair and Shop User Experience 25% Work with patrons and members on their projects in the DIY shop. Your primary focus is to educate customers to empower them to complete their own projects. Maintain a positive empowering and educational shop experience for staff, volunteers, and members. Job Skills and Requirements: You have a passion for teamwork, a black belt in communication, and an arsenal of interpersonal skills. You enjoy working with people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, and all ability levels. You’ve been paid to wrench on a wide variety of bicycles for 2+ years. You’ve used the phrase “Steel is Real” and Rigid steel bikes will always have a soft spot in your heart. You’ve spent a significant time volunteering with nonprofits or working on community projects.
