Remote Learning in the Age of Coronavirus

Hi. I run an in school Earn-A-Bike and open workshop program in Lowell, Massachusetts. All schools in Massachusetts, including the Lowell Public Schools, are closed for the remainder of the school year. Schools are moving to remote learning plans. How to adapt? What are your suggestions on creating remote learning programs and activities that engage students in cycling during the summer months (and possibly during the next school year)? Some students have access to bikes. Some do not. For students that do have bikes, many of their bikes are in disrepair. I'm sitting on a sizable inventory of donated bicycles that need refurbishment. Most students have access to a SmartPhone and/or other digital device (laptop, Chromebook, tablet). Many thanks for your input. Wade The Bike Connector Lowell, Massachusetts

Hey bike folks, I'm working adapting our bike ed course to a remote learning format, and want to tap into the thinktank hive-mind. Does anyone have a link to a good video of someone crashing via and 'endo'? Ideally it would be shot from the side, have clear footage, and not to gruesome (though I can edit knarly bits out). I'm looking for something to accompany an explanation of inertia, and act as an intro to an emergency braking lesson. Like I see many shops have done, we're taking some much needed time to rethink things that weren't working in our shop while we're closed to the public. Arizona's Covid-19 numbers aren't quite what we need them to be to reopen safely. So....cranksets!? We've gone back and forth between pegboard and milkcrate storage. I would love to hear other suggestions for storing these unwieldy beasts! Maybe even some photos? Please and thank you! That which has value is valuable, though resources and availability to pay differs, especially in times of great uncertainty and instability. What would be useful would be transparency of the costs involved, knowledge that everything created and built is, and stays within, the public domain for public benefit (if that's the intention?), a sliding scale from $0-?? providing inclusive access and/or if consultancy work is to be garnered off the back of this, that organisations should perhaps be paid rather than pay for attendance - with funding for costs found from the facilitator as this would effectively be R&D for his private consultancy business. Doesn't sound like this is the intention but there did seem to be a lack of transparency, perhaps due to brevity and time pressure/focus in delivery to organisations asap. I think the concept is great, value high and work much needed. Pre-workshop, I would also solicit and include research that organisations are already doing from attendance of business, governmental and educational workshops, webinars, events etc + any personal study and research to build a resource base for trends and info on social, political, economic and technological driving forces that is and stays within the public domain for access of all groups and organisations. I think I sent you through some of this Robert when you emailed me? Why we work within a gift economy, why everything is open source, why we're moving to zero waste etc... If not, pm me with what you feel would be most useful and I'll share resources I've garnered that may be helpful to the workshop group. Building something virtual here in the UK for similar ends, but as ever, also 1000 other things demanding time/resource priority, especially atm. What informed and continues to inform in my work within Active Mobilty and life in general is where we need to head as a global society, of one human race, who share one planet and are tasked with stewardship of it, each other, and all sentient life.... challenging the prevailing narrative of ownership and extraction. Quite simply, we need to move from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance, we need to dismantle private profit at public risk/expense and practially rewrite many of our stories that are not in alignment with a heart-centred life....the head has had too much focus over the last 200yrs and it's too out of balance! How often do you all check for recalled items on the old bikes? Been seeing these recalled Shimano cranks show up on bikes we've taken in recently: https://www.facebook.com/bikex.org/posts/1425107737695385 Since finding 3 pairs in two months, I printed the recall notice images and put them in the shop to help others find them. Thankfully Shimano is still replacing them. I also have been looking out for recalled Suntour forks <https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2014/scott-trek-recall-bicycles-with-sr-suntou…>, but haven't seen one yet. What else do you guys check for? Do you see anything often? How do you educate staff/volunteers on such recalls? Conflict due to COVID

Hey all, My name is Aaron. I volunteer at the Davis Bike Church in Davis, CA. I was wondering if there are any other collectives experiencing intensely conflicting views on how to respond to the pandemic. I am looking for suggestions on how to present a safe new operating model so that those who are more at risk can agree to the shop being open (in some capacity). My experience is that there is a spectrum of approaches to operating under COVID and it is difficult to find a middle ground where a consensus can be made among collective members. It’s true, people’s lives are at risk. But also there are needs in the community that can outweigh the risk associated with (safe) operation. It just depends on how you look at it. The stakes are definitely high and it is a touchy, if not politicized topic. I would love to hear other people’s experiences, and if they are stuck like us or if they have figured out a new operating model that works for them. Also interested to hear about what it took, from a people/core member perspective, to get to the other side of the COVID lockdown. Thanks a ton. Aaron

How to order low priced bike supplies through a distributor?

Hi, I volunteer with Bikes del Pueblo, a volunteer-run non-profit bike collective in San Diego, CA. We teach bike mechanics and offer very low priced, free, or donation based used bikes and parts. We want to find a bike supply distributor (such as JBI, QBP, etc) to work with to start ordering bike supplies, tubes, and parts at their wholesale prices. I've been finding that these companies ask for an application to be completed first with required documents like a state sales tax certificate, license for selling and repairing bikes, and other stuff that bike shops would have but we don't have any of. We have insurance, 501c3 non-profit status, and a space to operate out of, but don't do sales tax, don't have licenses, and don't have a formal sales floor vs repair areas. Would other bike coops/collectives have recommendations of wholesale bike distributors to get in touch with for ordering that would accept collectives like ours without needing to be a standard style bike shop or have all those official documents? One that stood out from the Safe and Effective Operations Workshop is around the capacity to provide services where shops are facing an increased need from communities while facing internal challenges to be able to safely help. In other words - An inaccessible resource is not a resource. I understand that there are some serious social issues around equity and diversity that may be more important to be addressed. Brilliant question Robert! The main solution I've been developing for the last 4 years is an open source business model based on stewardship rather than ownership and extraction, which I believe is fundamental to cocreating a regenerative, truly sustainable planet. In the first instance, I'm doing this within the realm of active mobility. Having started in the corporate sector and volunteered and worked for a number of charities, as well as running my own businesses in diverse fields, it's clear that the pubic/private/3rd sector organisations all leave something to be desired. This, along with the prevailing current debt-based economic system in the version of capitalism most of us dwell within, has and continues to fail humanity and sentient life, with externalised costs, the demand for perpetual growth within a finite system and missing the value of so many things that are essentially priceless. Rebuilding local, national and global economies and business models based around stewardship and empowering sovereign beings to live their full potential I believe are the most pressing needs of our time. Hi Everyone, Here are some of the possible solutions that were put together by participants during the Safe and Effective Shop Operations Workshop. Thank you for your patience with me getting these out while I finish my last Masters class. These are based around the three categories of Volunteer Management, Capacity for Providing Services, and Safe operations. It considers what services can be offered, the activities involved, and the cultural context. *VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT* - *More emails for volunteers * - Separate from full list - *Sending home bikes for repair with experienced volunteers* - Distributive model: have "certified" volunteers who can do some repairs/ bike distribution in their neighborhoods - Being okay doing less, but with more effort - Different volunteers have different comfort/saftey levels. Making sure the most vulnerable/concerned are protected - Tool Library - *Assigned Contributions* - People used to be able to choose where they wanted to contribute but choices are limited due to health/safety and various concerns/needs around what health and safety is *ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY FOR DELIVERING SERVICES* - *Fixing bikes for people without fees* (fundraiser helped) - No more than three mechanics opposed to 8. Fourth person is the greeter or bouncer. - Limited advertising for fear of being overwhelmed - *Come back to mission statement for guidance or to pivot* - *Online live classes* - Focus on certain aspects of bike such as derailleur adjustment, etc. - Alternative to Zoom: Jitsi <- open source, Google Meet (These all have call-in function with regular phone) - Online is easy for people with means to reliable internet and smartphones / computer - *"Zoom Shift" * - Open q&a time for community members - Podcast has a lower barrier to access than Zoom? - concerns about equity - some ppl have more access and understanding of online tools than others *SAFE SHOP OPERATIONS* - *Offering pay-for-service repairs rather than DIY* - With transit shut down in some places, more people are biking. - Dr & Nurses get a discounted rate. - Cleaning in evening. - Sanitizing rentals between customers. Or let them sit for a few days. - repair service can be on sliding scale - *Only key volunteers allowed in shop* - Not accepting new volunteers - *Programming changes* - Summer camp canceled or reduced People are worried about what's happening and what's going to happen in future / fall. Especially in the US. That's totally understandable. It might be best if your organization spent an hour or two building scenarios of what the future might look like to assist with planning. Some questions that have come up during our conversations include: - How can bike co-ops support movements for racial justice & indigenous sovereignty in a meaningful and sustained way? - Are you fundraising/donating money, if so how and for whom? - Are you providing low barrier repair services, bikes, etc.? Trends and Insights from the Safe & Effective Operations Workshop

Hello Everyone Here are some of the trends that came up around Safe Operations from the discussions held during the Safe & Effective Shop Operations Workshop held on June 12th. These came from over twenty different organizations across the United States, Canada, and Australia. This is just one part of what was discussed. Stay tuned as there are still info around Volunteer Management, Capacity for Providing Purposes to come, and more. *SAFE OPERATIONS * BUSINESS SHIFTS - Online sales & Instruction - Pricing changes - Rethinking of business models IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE - Making shops mobile PEOPLE MANAGEMENT - Utilizing appointment systems - Focusing more on the local community - Fewer people coming to the shop - Some shops need more staff to meet demand SAFETY PRACTICES - Some shops are working with health officials to build best practices - Protocols for prioritizing individual and group health - Enhanced clean-up & disinfection practices - Rethinking airflow (HVAC, fans, swamp coolers) - Personal protective equipment (gloves & masks) - Distancing - Some shops are not allowing customers inside *INSIGHTS* - Organizations are going to need an online component to stay relevant - Organizations without a clear vision to fall back are going to suffer harder - Re-opening as business-as-usual is going to lead to virus spread That's all for now. Hi All I was unable to join that session and appreciate you writing up the findings. I would add that we made the following observations at a recent Zoom meeting that seem to be in accord with those observations. We are experiencing less diversity in the workshop for 2 almost opposite reasons We had to exclude some people due to their refusal to take social distancing seriously. Women who are already a minority have mainly self excluded due to their perception of the risk of attending. One of our women has volunteered to reach out to volunteers who have not attended recently and encourage them to attend. We just entered partial lockdown again so this has not helped. Wheel sizing system?

Hi all, Katheryn from the Bike Kitchen in Windsor, Ontario here! Question for the community shop hive: does anyone have any ideas for effective and accurate systems for sizing wheels in your shop? We’ve got piles of used wheels with no markings or tires to identify them with that often get mislabelled (most commonly a 700c and 27x1 1/4 mixup) which is causing issues when we resell them. Does your shop have a sizing system that is easy to use for students or volunteers without much technical knowledge to size and sort wheels with? Blimey Josh...not in the US but what has been going on there, triggered by George Floyd's death, has lit a fuse around the world and (thankfully) we're seeing a lot of structural injustices being highlighted and examined right now. re: "the Mechanical Gardens' visible support for and engagement with the BLM movement makes us unappealing to insurers. Carriers consider BLM and, I quote, "the whole George Floyd thing" to be a "touchy" and "hot button issue" (these are actual quotes from brokers! wtf!) and thus our involvement makes us an unattractive risk to take on." I'm making the assumption that the Mechanical Gardens have a code of conduct or policy that states your non-negotiable values and is aligned for the greater good, community building and non-violence?...personally, I'd seek out another Insurer who shares your values...or....if you feel the EDC's values are closely aligned with your own, I'd also share the challenge with them...maybe they could recommend an Insurer or share a statement of solidarity that could act as leverage? I'd also lean into rather than away from the Insurer/s who've stated this to find out more. Insurance is all about risk after all. Aligning with all those who support racial equality and justice should be less risky, not more so. Insurance Woes, Continued!

I mentioned an insurance conundrum a couple weeks ago, and it hasn't worked itself out; now I'm at the "calling all ships" stage -- please give a gander below. *Also a new turn in the story: structural racism!* Brokers have told us that getting a new insurance policy in NYC is especially hard right now, not only because of COVID, but also because of all the Black Lives Matter activity here. They said told that the Mechanical Gardens' visible support for and engagement with the BLM movement makes us unappealing to insurers. Carriers consider BLM and, I quote, "the whole George Floyd thing" to be a "touchy" and "hot button issue" (these are actual quotes from brokers! wtf!) and thus our involvement makes us an unattractive risk to take on. In other words, our denial from the insurance industry is a manifestation of systemic, structural racism, and it's erecting an unjust barrier to bike equity. *The short story:* We're on the threshold of a deal for space with a powerful city agency, the EDC, but we can't proceed b/c we don't have insurance. And we can't get insurance b/d we're in NYC and seem like a risk. *The solution we're seeking right now* is for another organization to add the Mechanical Gardens as an "additional named insured" to their current general commercial liability insurance policy; in that capacity, we would be able to add the EDC as a temporary insured party for the two-week pilot we're trying with them. An alternative: for an organization to just temporarily add both the Mechanical Gardens and the EDC to their policy in the manner the EDC stipulates in their contract for the duration of this 2wk program. If your coverage goes up, we'd pay the difference. *SO: *Any ideas, and/or any takers? *The longer story: *Right now the Mechanical Gardens has hit a wall, right at the threshold of an amazing opportunity. We've been negotiating with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, a hugely powerful quasi-public agency in NYC, for space to stage this <https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/projects/145159-mechanical-gardens-bik…>. The EDC is offering us space to pilot the program: two weeks to train volunteers to build 50 bikes (donated new from Kent), that the EDC will then send to hospital workers at at the front lines of COVID-19. For this pilot, we're hiring a group of BIPOC LGBTQ youths from a local ride club as apprentice mechanics, teaching them basic wrenching skills that will prepare them for resilient bike industry jobs and for community resiliency actions. The program will be sensational, and address a complexity of social justice goals all at once. *But: we're in a bind.* Our nonprofit fiscal sponsor, the Alliance for Global Justice, no longer provides insurance for our operation, but the EDC needs us to have insurance, and needs to be temporarily added to the policy themselves, as stipulated in the draft agreement they sent over. We are hitting a brick wall trying to procure local coverage for ourselves. This all is time-critical, because our program with the EDC cannot go forward unless we have the ability to show them insurance and add them as a named party on the policy. Nonprofits are shying away, insurers are effectively blacklisting us, commercial shops are punting, and we're running low on options. This could be a tremendous opportunity to contribute valuably and substantively to the movement for black equity and social justice in NYC, and to further help universalize bike riding for all New Yorkers. We are in the planning stage of our 3rd *Kickstarter* publishing venture, this time centered around *bicycles / women / emancipation*. And we are looking for a particular kind of contribution. Conceived here, in Montreal, but with collaborators all over Europe and Americas, our two previous Kickstarter projects (here http://tiny.cc/3k4ymz and here http://tiny.cc/zl4ymz) were very much concerned with strong social issues - Spanish Civil War, women combating fascism and their role in resistance. This new undertaking looks to bring together the utilitarian object that is the bicycle with practical paper-based artifacts, like calendars and playing cards. These two are then editorially balanced by a book, designed to celebrate the bicycle as a symbol and facilitator of the women’s emancipation movement. Send us a cycling-inspired street-graffiti photo. Or multiple photos / of multiple graffiti, from your city walls, ideally including permission or, at least, the artist name, if known, in order to credit the work. Please specify which name you’d like to be credited to in your email. BBP is seeking a Shifting Gears Coordinator to lead our programming partnership with the Idaho Department of Corrections. Reports to: Executive Director Classification: Full Time Exempt, plus Benefits Salary Range: $31,200 - $33,280 depending on experience Weekly Schedule: Will included some nights and weekends In 2017, BBP created Shifting Gears, a groundbreaking program to teach incarcerated women how to fix kids' bicycles while earning a bicycle for future transportation needs. In 2020, BBP secured grant funding to expand Shifting Gears to the Idaho Department of Corrections men’s facilities. This program is called Project Kickstand and lives under the umbrella of Shifting Gears programming. Because men incarcerated at this facility generally serve much longer sentences than the women in our Shifting Gears program, there is a new opportunity to build in a certified vocational training program that will lead to future job placement while significantly increasing the amount of bicycles BBP provides to teens. BBP’s Shifting Gears Coordinator will manage all aspects of both the men’s and women’s programs. Hey Kim, Just responding about your Thinktank posting about outdoor bike repair stations. I work for Intercity Transit in Olympia, WA. We experimented with a public tool station mounted at our main transit center. It was removed maybe a month or so after it was installed. It quickly became a bicycle chop-shop for folks in our community, particularly outside of our hours of operation. Two things I would recommend for a public tool station are... 1) Make it secure, but movable. Or it could be in a lockable closest/cage/space. It is difficult to foster a positive use of this resource when no staff is around. 2) Have clearly posted rules about use. I'd recommend listing allowed repairs, or time limits. We had regulars who would camp out at the stand making it unusable for others needing quick fixes. Online Collaborative Workshop on Safe & Effective Shop Operations

I wanted to invite the bike collective community to a collaborative online workshop to make a bit more sense of operating safely & effectively both in the short and long terms, volunteer management, and shop's capacity for providing services. Day: Friday June 12 Time: 3pm Central Time This will be a three-part structured workshop where participants will be paired up with each other and begin to chart the trends they are seeing. We will then look at these as a group. The second part will be working together in small groups to sort out what services you feel are critical to address, the activities to make them happen, and what the cultural aspects for each will be. The final part will be individual or by shop, by focusing on who it is you are serving, what you are offering them, the opportunities there, and the risks involved. I realize that some shops have already figured this stuff out, but I know there are several that are still struggling with it. This is to help them. It would be great to have participants who can share how they have worked things out. It is a 45 minute long workshop. We will be using Zoom for meeting together and Freehand by Invision to collaborate. I built this workshop in grad school and this is the first time doing it digitally. I plan to record it so I can see what works and what doesn't. Hi. I am a member of The Bike Connector, an earn-a-bike and bike collective program in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. We recently gained access to container (12m L x 2.3m W x 2.26m H; 40' L x 7.6' W x 7.4' H) to help manage our inventory of bikes and parts. I want to maximize the capacity of the container, while allowing for easy access to the bikes. I'm sure others have solved this optimization problem. Any suggestions for how to organize this space? Hi Everyone! Wow! I am blown away by how many shops are wanting to participate. There are almost 30 shops from across the US, Canada, and Australia! The more shops participating then a bigger look at the trends can happen. To be able to best facilitate this, I could use the help of a couple of volunteers for the following roles: - Task: You keep us on track, on schedule, and monitor the clock. - Reflecting: You monitor the chat for questions so nobody gets left behind - Growth: You assist helping people with getting their ideas down, using the tools (Freehand, Zoom, Trend Matrix, Offering-Activity-Culture Map), encourage collaboration, get people out of their heads.
