Kicked out of Bike!Bike!?!

Eric, a 6’5” bright eyed volunteer from Working Bikes, flew from Chicago to attend his first Bike!Bike! We met Wednesday night while helping to bring bikes across the border (two at a time). On Thursday, he was helping in the basement to fix up the bikes. By Thursday night, he was kicked out of Bike!Bike! I found out the next day only because the executive director of Working Bikes was worried and contacted me. From the information I received from Eric and a Bike!Bike! organizer, someone involved with Enclave Caracol took Eric’s bike away and insisted he leave because of his former military experience and current employment as a commodities trader. WTF? I‘ve always found Bike!Bike! to be an inclusive group of humanoids doing rad things with bikes. Now I question if my lifestyle or others might not fit the ideals imposed by a few. Only a small group was informed about this decision, and it wasn’t shared with the entire group. Furthermore, what happened to the inclusive nature of Bike!Bike!? Something about this doesn’t sit right with me, so I don’t think I will be returning to another Bike!Bike! without better understanding this situation. Then again, maybe I’m not even wanted..

This was my first Bike!Bike! after my awaking and being ostracized from my Collective. I knew I wasn't a part of this world anymore, especially after my experiences this summer. I tried to join a new shop and had many opportunities to find some like-minded folks, but what I found was crushing. Bring up veganism to the majority of those that are fighting the good fight against the system and get ready to hear them attack you personally or worse... Defend the system! I could fill this part with examples, but you already know... "I could never give up cheese!" "I love bacon!" and on and on... Why is this? I'm sure you know someone that died on their bike because of our car culture. Many of us know someone that died because drug prohibition... ie accidental overdose. And even suicide because capitalism is crushing our souls. But ask people to apply to same scrutiny to the system that provides them with flesh and fluids, and they won't. They'll give excuses. They'll get mad at the messenger. But they won't admit that animal agriculture goes against their own values. ... ... I have a bunch to say but I don't think anyone want to hear it...

In London (and UK in general) there is no recycling of bicycle tyres as the machines used to recycle car tyres here jam up. In short...they're landfilled as far as I know. We turn road and hybrid tyres into belts and sell these (or raffle/gift them) I know that Schwalbe recycle bike tyres in Germany and are considering this in the UK. Hello friends! In 2015 we had the pleasure of receiving you during Bike! Guadalajara, in Casa Ciclista. We learned to work autonomously, to have safe spaces and to share it with other groups, we have empowered ourselves and we are glad to say so. We want to inform you of the situation that the group is going through: The place that for 5 years has been Casa Ciclista will soon be put up for sale and at some point we will have to leave it. We leave deeply grateful to the owner, our dear friend and ally. We are analyzing the following options: : Renting another space, which at this time would be difficult because it would represent increasing operating expenses. Move a part of the workshop to Casa Chabelita, a good friend's project, he has a bike mechanics workshop and a space to receive us. Find a house in bailment (borrowed for several years) with the government (a difficult but not impossible option). Finally, make a funding with the people who have passed through the house and allied groups to obtain money and pay for the operating expenses they have. We would like to hear your opinions and / or recommendations when you face these situations. We will do everything possible to maintain a space where we continue to receive people from other groups from anywhere in the world, the exchange of mechanics will continue, as well as the support for people who travel by bicycle around the world and need a space to rest and repair your bike, a workshop to learn and make community, a meeting place for people who want to change the city under the pretext of the bicycle, make community meals and have bikes to loan. At Casa Ciclista during 2019, we have kept the following projects active: • Community workshop (Bike Bike) Thursday and Friday • Permanent support for people to learn to service their own bike • Workshop for training of bicycle mechanics • Bicycle repair shop at fair prices for people • Talks and conferences • Cultural events such as movie screenings, music concerts, • The place has been lent to groups that seek to improve human or labor rights • We share space with the White Bike project (Ghost Bike) • And we try to keep the Earn a Bike project. In that sense it has not been possible to bring the bicycle container from Chicago with Working Bikes. We thank Trevor and the entire team for their support, we have talked to the interior of the group and for now we will pause the management. So, we will reactivate our Earn a local Bike, on a smaller scale, between 1 and 2 bicycles per month during the next year, to be able to deliver between 12 and 24 bicycles per year. We have received the support of people we met at B! The Coordinator is primarily responsible for organizing and training the Bicycle Collective's volunteer workforce to refurbish bicycles for our charitable programs. Notes from Lesson's learned from B!B! Guadalajara?

Does anyone have notes from the debrief we had in Guadalajara after BikeBike? We had a round table and there was some real lesson's learned. I would be ecstatic if someone kept a copy of those notes. Anyone Anyone? I'm BCC'ing some people that I know were there. If no one has notes, maybe we can have a quick conference call to try to brainstorm/remember what those lessons were. Thanks! -Momoko

Joshua Tree

I've a couple of friends who are headed to Joshua Tree area to work for a few months. They've got a couple of bikes that they're carrying with them. I gave them the once over, and both need significant work. Normally, I'd offer to do this for them myself, but they want to leave in the morning, so time is not on my side. I suggested they find a co-op/collective in the area to give them a hand. What is the closest to JT? Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance. Stuart Nottingham

Dividing Paid vs Volunteer Labor

Hi pals, The Mechanical Gardens has been essentially an all-volunteer effort so far, but we're exploring adding some paid positions to reach real organizational sustainability. Things like fundraising, fostering organizational partnerships, and even just coordinating operations and volunteers are challenging to do with no paid staff time. It's obviously tricky to make this shift though. One thing we need to do is comfortably distinguish: (a) the types of work for which people are paid, versus (b) the types of work for which people volunteer. *So: in your organization, what are some of the ways you divide these things up?* A related question might be: *What are your titles and job descriptions for your paid positions? * I know this topic opens a whole can of worms, but maybe we can get into it a couple of questions at a time...
