Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. hey all, i'm looking to get in touch with the person who wrote/published the "no boys allowed" zine which was passed out at bikebike in san francisco. it was part of one of the oppression and gender identity issues workshops. we're looking to start a women's night here at community cycles, and i'd like to scan my copy as a pdf and email it to potential volunteers, as well as make some copies to have in the shop... if you're on the list, or if you know the person who wrote it (her name escapes me), please get in touch with me off list... thanks! josh. community cycles boulder

The Bike Collective Network will be in booth "L4" (http://ib.goexposoftware.com/2010/goExpo/floorPlan/viewFloorPlan.php) this year for Interbike. Yeah, we got bumped. But it will still be fun. It is that time of year again, where we pack rooms at Circus Circus, ride in crazy alley cat races, attend the NBDA seminars for non-profit applicable nuggets of info, check out the cycling industry's 2011 lines, and... then there are the things that stay in Vegas. A group will be driving out from Salt Lake City, Utah on the 21st. If you are planning on going, need help with badges, rooms, etc.,... please let me know offlist. Design contest for bicycle valet parking rack: $250 prize

Hello, colleagues; The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op <http://ohiocitycycles.org/> has been valet-parking bikes<http://ohiocitycycles.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24%3…>at community events for about 10 years. We have tried many different solutions for portable parking racks for this service including shipping pallets and baby-crib rails, and are now using bike rims<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091211/83848784…>screwed to three furring strips<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091210/83848781…>, (the best photos we have are in these links). We're looking for a better solution, as we have several regular yearly events where we need to park up to 300 bikes. As the above-linked photos attest, portability is a primary consideration. Thanks to a grant from Cleveland Colectivo <http://www.clevelandcolectivo.org/>, we are offering $250 to anyone with a better idea. This contest closes May 11th. Advocacy Resources Produced/Used by Community Projects

Some folks associated with MoBo Bike Co-op in Cincinnati are trying to put together bicycle advocacy resources into a sort of advocacy toolbox. Our goal is to produce something that could be used to equip or incite community members to do advocacy work/build community around bikes. I'm curious if any shops out there like ours have produced anything like this, and could share advocacy resources/ideas they have used. Those of you who do advocacy work of any kind: what resources/documents/actions do you use? Are community projects, specifically co-ops, producing anything of their own or simply borrowing resources from traditional advocacy organizations/clubs? In the spring we'd like to begin doing some off-site advocacy "workshops"- essentially group events with cyclists and community members who aren't currently connected with our shop community in which we'd provide resources and/or trainings on topics like 'how to organize group rides', 'advocating for better bike laws and planning in your community', 'encouraging new riders', etc. Any resources, ideas, tips you could pass along would be well-appreciated! Giving thanks

Friends I am thankful for the growth of the Summit Cycling Center. In 2007, it was an idea born at the Peter Maurin Center. In 2008, it became an Ohio Nonprofit Corporation. At Thanksgiving 2009, it was supported by less than 10 members. I was moving my mothballed bike shop equipment into Canal Place. I had help moving, usually one friend at a time. In 2010, we have grown to 45 members and gained many patrons and supporters in the community. We established an elected board in May; and by next year, we should should have 501c3 tax exempt status. Even without the status, we have received some incredible bike donations; and other goods, as well. Hard working members have come in and arranged the store layout; building shelves and a bench. Thank you one and all! Charles Hudkins and I built a bike trailer from re-purposed and re-used materials. We set up a courier contract with S E Blueprint. The trailer has hauled a lot of blueprints since June. This courier service has contributed a significant amount of income to our coffers. With it, we met one facet of our mission statement-to create cycle-based micro-enterprises. Charles was unemployed before he joined SCC in May, now he makes money for himself and SCC as a courier. We hope to expand the courier service in the coming year. We plan to start other micro-enterprises. as well. We are currently working on a multi-modal conveyence. Tyler Goodin contributed a wooden shipping crate. Dave Stoddard donated a pair of utility wheels. We salvaged some EMT and borrowed a hydraulic bender. We bought some steel and lumber. When completed, it will be a sturdy cargo hauler. Its three modes will be 1)pushcart 2)bike trailer 3)front end of a tadpole box trike. It will be used to take scrap metal to the salvage yard, which will put some cash in our coffers. It also will be available for rental for anyone wanting to move a load car-free. We are off on a good start. I thank all of you for what you have contributed as a customer, a member, or a donor. Yet we are not all we can be yet. We have needs and wants; some simple and some not so. We need a few more folding chairs. We need certain key tools for the 1st bench and more basic tools for the member's workbench. If you have any spare tools that you don't need, call and see if they can be used for our members and repair classes. Eventually, we will need 5 sets of tools for repair classes. Any left over lumber, pegboard, metal stock in your garage? We will find a use for it. Have you a wringer washer that you can give? Have you any rags? Any bike parts or accessories? The membership would like SCC to have its own phone and internet service. For the first year, Time Warner requires $1535.00. Will anyone or a group of you pledge that amount?Of course, we will need a phone for that. Does anyone have a phone they can donate? Having these services will very likely increase membership enrollment, sales, and our ability to serve the community. I believe that this increase will cover the cost of these services in the second year. Can anyone give us a leg up? We greatly need a computer that can run accounting and Point of Sale software. Anyone have one less than five years old that they can donate? Call and talk to Charles about it. He can tell you if it will do the job. Advanced Computer Services quoted us $199.00 for one. They are currently out of stock. Anyone willing to pledge for that? I am interested in the Quick Books for Nonprofits program and their Point of Sale program. I would like to get a hand scanner and a receipt printer, too. Any information or help in this area would be appreciated. Since the membership has grown, we need a bigger refrigerator. There will be bigger parties and events next year and we will need a bigger refrigerator to store the goods for those occasions. Can anyone help in this? Last but not least, we desperately need a bigger place. Please keep an eye out for a groundfloor space 3 to 4 thousand sq. ft.. Perhap you know someone that can provide us this space at a very low rent. Please let us know.
