Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. Reusable Repair Checklist Tag

Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. Instruction for Marginalized Communities: Women on Wheels and Multilingual Nights

Oh HEYYYY again... It's a double email kinda day. 1) Multilingual Nights We're hosting our first ever multilingual nights YAYYYYY! We now have a posse of rad mechanics who are fluent in English, Spanish, French, Cantonese, and Mandarin and we are planning to hold a series of multilingual instruction nights. We're about to have our first sub-committee meeting about how we're going to go about the planning of these nights (ie: Do we have a strictly Spanish night, or a Spanish & French night? What is the role of Anglo mechanics in these nights? What are the underlying needs of these communities beyond language instruction?), but first I wanted to find out if any of you have feedback or resource materials about your own experiences hosting multilingual nights. What did you set out to do? Did it work? What did you learn? 2) Women on Wheels We're in the process of reconsidering the reach and name of our women's night, Women on Wheels. This name has been revisited several times by our collective, and again we're feeling the need for change. Those of you who commit energy to thinking about providing services across the gender/sexuality spectrum...I'm looking for your input. The key challenges for us, (and maybe all of us?) I think, are two-fold: First, it's about holding space for those who adhere to identity politics (tangible and named - Woman, Lesbian, Dyke, sometimes Transwoman etc) while also holding space for folks who exist all along the gender and sexuality spectrum (intangible and variably named - Queer, Tomboi, sometimes Transwoman, Genderqueer, etc ). As in, how do we hold safer space for butch grandmas and trans women and gender queer folks all at once? Is it feasible or possible to hold safer space strictly around gender variance? Or is it presumptuous as fuck to try to lump these diverse communities together? Or reductionist to assume gender experience is the key connecting factor between these individuals (and not race, or class, or ....)? Second, it's about negotiating the instances of inclusion and exclusion that emerge as a result of differing levels of awareness and knowledge around these varied philosophies and ways of identifying. This is the crux of why we've called it Women's Night for so long. While in practice our "women's night" is attended by trans-women, cis-women, femmes, masculine-identified genderqueers, tombois, etc etc, we have continued to call it women's night to make sure that people who aren't familiar with the world of post-modern gender identity know they are welcome, and cis-men know easily and clearly that it is not for them. I guess, to make it legible to mainstream communities, while still welcoming to non-mainstream communities. Meanwhile, we've also had interest from femme-identified cis-men and trans men in having services for masculine-presenting folks or folks who are presumed masculine (which again, is on a really broad spectrum). We're in convo with folks about their needs and wants, but it would also be great to have input from other shops. Where I'm really seeking is input about how your shops are drawing the lines around participation in nights for marginalized communities (including communities bonded around race, ethnicity, ability, etc) and/or how to meld diverse communities in appropriate and supportive ways. I know that Plan B has Ladies, Trans, and Sissies Night, and BICAS has Women, Trans, and Femme night. Where are folks at with their organizing process around this? What are other shops doing? members and sign up database software

Hey Folks! So at Our Community Bikes in Vancouver, we're thinking it's time to set up a proper sign in / sign out system, combined with a membership and volunteer database. Ideally we would like to know what software is out there that can track people coming in and using our space, a simple laptop or desktop kiosk where folks can type in info, and it would enter our database. Also to serve as a database that members can register into, and again wherein volunteers can sign up, and log their hours, and tasks accomplished. sooo.. any ideas? Jesse Cooper

These are available for free to anyone with one of the vouchers we provide to our social partners. Bikes with higher re-sale value are priced according to the market and sold to the general public to cover our overhead. Advanced Repair Classes for Adults?

Hey Folks, Here at Neighborhood Bike Works <http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/> we have had a surge of interest in our Adult Repair Classes <http://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/programs/adult-bike-repair-classes/> and are considering expanding our offerings in this realm in response. Our current system consists of 4 consecutive 2.5 hour Monday night classes. We cover Flat Fixing, Brake Adjustment and repair, Bearing Adjustment and Repair, and Drive Train Adjustment and Repair for $80. It is taught by either our Board President or our Lead Mechanic, with an alternating Youth Assistant. *Does anyone have 2 tiers of classes, or an advanced class they offer adult participants?* If so, what do you cover? The only time we have ever had a "tip jar" at Bike Pirates is as the bar at events. The money goes with all the other money from that night - usually a fundraiser for some organization. And we are clear about that if people ask. Occasionally a patron who has a super experience will try to tip the volunteer who helped them and (as far as I know) that money is always just put into out money box with their donation. We have as part of our policy and shop handbook a guideline that no one shall profit from use of our space (mostly out of concern related to patrons using us as a "personal workshop", flipping bikes, etc.) But this also applies to volunteers. Insurance for a free mobile fix-it service

Hi all - [Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I have been unable to access the Think Tank Archives even after logging on, so please forgive the possible duplication of an old topic.] A small group of us is wanting to do some simple repairs and safety checks (fix flats, adjust brakes, recommend needed repairs type of thing) at our local farmers' market. We are not a formal organization of any sort, just a bunch of friends thinking about getting into something larger and more formalized after we see how this goes. What is recommended for any sort of insurance coverage? It would be on public property at a farmers' market. The market has liability insurance, but we would not be a program of the market (if doing so would allow us to be covered, then maybe we should look into that). Sample concerns: - If we touch someone's bike and they roll out into traffic, get hit and claim that it was our bad repair job... - If we "break" their bike while trying to fix it... looking for a home for 100 or more bikes

I posted this a month or so ago. I figured i would post it one last time before we find another place for them to go. run a community bike shop in little rock arkansas and i am trying to make space in our shop. We have about 200 or more steel bikes(26,27and 700) we are not utilizing that we are looking to give to another program that could use them. They are mainly old road, cruiser, commuter type bikes. All one would need to due is come pick them up. If anyone is interested please contact us. We want to save these from going to the scrap yard. FREE bikes to use in rural town

Could you weigh in, please. We have a small, remote rural town with no real bike/Ped infrastructure...yet. A group wants to introduce about 100 used bikes for people to use for free in an already ailing, small downtown. Free bikes? What will that do to local, struggling bike businesses? Bikes but no supporting infrastructure? Thank you for your thoughts. Makes little sense to me. A decade or so ago many places tried what were called "yellow bike" programs (or whatever colour). Basically, paint a bunch of basic low-end bikes in a single colour and put them out for folks to use. I think pretty well every program eventually failed due to theft and misuse. And wikipedia says this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system) "In this type of programme the bicycles are simply released into a city or given area for use by anyone. In some cases, such as a university campus, the bicycles are only designated for use within certain boundaries. Users are expected to leave the bike unlocked in a public area once they reach their destination. Because the bike is not required to be returned to a centralised station, ready availability of such bicycles is rare, and since unlocked bikes may be taken by another user at any time, the original rider is forced to find alternative transport for the return trip. Bicycle sharing programs without locks, user identification, and security deposits have also historically suffered large loss rates from theft and vandalism." So I would suggest that while, as Matt wrote, it has the potential to get more folks interested in bikes, they may also end up despising them if your town starts filling up with the inevitable abandoned and broken bike carcasses. youth and parents/guardians

Hello awesome Think-Tankers, Quick question here from the BF Community Bike Project. A large percentage of the people we work with are at-risk youth in our community. A lot of these youth tend to be under the age of 18, and a good chunk of them are under the age of 14 (down to the age of 8). We're wondering about how strict we should be about allowing youth in here without parents/guardians? We don't want to turn youth away, and we require youth to get waivers signed by their parents... but we also don't want to be liable for anything that could go wrong with having a few young youth running around our premises, youth that aren't part of any specific program we offer. Any thoughts/words of wisdom? I'm working on a project with migrant agricultural workers in British Columbia this summer and I'm looking for reproducible Spanish and Tagalog how-to zines, handouts etc. We've got a good multilingual bicycle anatomy diagram that works well for us. I'm interested in anything you wanna send my way, but I'd be particularly interested in guides to patching flats, riding safely, and anything you've found useful for working with migrant workers/migrant agricultural workers more generally. Do any of you have to deal with government paperwork for transferring bicycle ownership when repairing or reselling donated bikes? Does anyone else but Hawaii have such a system? If I don't hear from anyone I'll assume it is a system unique to Hawaii. The system is: Mandatory $15 onetime registration fee/tax, if your bike doesn't have a yellow registration sticker on it, police can impound it and give you a $50 ticket. You can get your bike back by paying the $15 tax later. It is really only enforced on homeless people. There are many unregistered bikes around--newcomers and tourists and even long time residents are not complying with the system. To transfer ownership it is $5 and more paperwork. Basically they've been treating bikes like mopeds for many years now. I'm hoping we can do away with that system, and shift to a free registration system like bikeindex.org. We'll see. However, a significant local bike organization, HBL.org, gets funds from the tax for education programs. Thanks for listening! Safe space/ safe ride statements?

In prep for bike month a group of us are thinking about having a safe ride statement for our group/social rides something akin to a safe space policy. Does anyone have one that I could take a look at? Dear fellow subscribers, My name is Marcilla Smith, and I am the Communications Coordinator for the Durham Bicycle Co-operative. We are a 501(c)3 community bike project in Durham, NC, USA founded in 2007. I am writing today to make a first posting introduction, and to ask a question. Earlier this month, the City of Durham agreed to lease our co-op some unused property from the city's parks department. Until this happened, I have been unaware of any bike co-ops that operate on government land. All others with which I am familiar either own the land or lease from a private owner. I am curious if anyone has any additional information about any other community bike projects with facilities on government property.
