Hey All, We just spent some time and redid the tag we use to track repairs on a bike. I'm sure your shops are similar to ours in that many mechanics of varying skill levels will work on a single bike before it's distributed back to the world for use. This make it challenging to ensure a standard of quality on any given bike leaving the shop. As we fleshed out the tag we realized that it could function loosely as a curriculum. For most mechanics, especially students we suggest starting at the top and working down the list. I've come to realize that no two mechanics will do things in the exact same way, everyone has their own style. We've been suggesting that folks do the first two items in order and then address the rest of the repairs at their discretion. Of course we couldn't put everything on a half page so we had to make compromises. You'll notice as you get closer to the bottom of the tag the categories are a little more broad and don't get into the finer details. We're working on a final check list that will include finer details like checking bearing play, tire wear, fine tune derailleurs and brakes... The final checklist won't hang on the bike but it'll be around the shop and part of our training. Stay tuned for this. We print these double sided, cut them in half and laminate them. We hang them on the handlebars and fill them out with a Sharpie. When the bike is done and gone we clean the Sharpie off with 90% rubbing alcohol and a rag. This allows us to use one tag over and over and over. We've been using these tags for about 2 weeks now and it's been awesome. Communication between mechanics is much clearer and bikes are getting done faster. It's really helped orient Earn-A-Bike students to what needs to be done next on their bike. laying out a community bike workshop

Hey guys, Building from the ground up here in Clonakilty. As part of a much larger arts centre application I'm writing a part of the project to have a very strong repair workshop element, led by the community bike shop (rarr!). So the bike workshop could be the beating heart of a much larger busy space, managing a tool library, welding space, paint spraying space. The space would need to be really fit for purpose (firstly as a learning bike workshop suited for subscribers, volunteers, workshop participants). These are the design considerations I've been thinking about, and also a rough drawing I did of this kind of set up with ideas I've practised in my own limited workshop design and layout experience; stuff I've learned from reading design books ({Pattern Language- I love you), and loads of considerate tips I gleaned from reading your wonderful posts. With the following considerations in place (below) could you add anything or offer advise? Much appreciated. i love to read this thread. Ulick PROPOSED MODEL FOR WORKSHOP ON THE SITE - Master bench ELEVATED (specialised more expensive tools located and stored here. Space is also separated by a low partition, but one using that station has a clear line of sight right across workshop. - space for a blackboard/screen/ projector - 6- 8 workstations. more multi-use benches (1. washer station, wood section) -Fold away workshop (PRESSES/ CUPBOARDS/ COASTERS) - Lighting and electricity needs - Bench needs. i used scaffolding planks covered with 1/4" ply top on my last bike bench and I'm happy enough. Different benches of different heights. - Power needs: possibly accommodating a medium arc and a tig welding station (safely separated from bike workshop/ classroom) - Welding and forge (?) station - what do i do with grease and oil stains? - Storage needs (bikes, tools, parts possible to be all shuttered away so that the workshop is multifunctional - access needs (wheelchairs, physical disabilities,loading in, shop access from street) - Power input needs (voltage, power outputs/ plugs (where/ how many? - Water needs (plumbing, sinks, etc) - Risk assessments, safety statement - lighting (I was thinking LED Strips over benches, then some more ambient light, invite in natural light where possible - heating and ventilation needs

hi ThinkTankers, after 17 years of hardcore 100% volunteer powered ebbs and flows, Troy Bike Rescue is poised to take a risk and hire one seasonal staff person (called shop manager at this point, but it could change) to help us increase consistency and accessibility of our workshop space. for us board members and for me as founder and forever volunteer, it feels a little like stepping off a cliff, but the current board is badass and motivated and feeling ready, and I am getting behind it. Because there is a lot to talk about here, I am writing with the *specific purpose *of soliciting feedback about writing a job description for said position. and I know the think tank will provide. i love and am perpetually amazed at the dialog and community demonstrated on this list. Things we are thinking about: how can we attract someone with the perfect blend of people and bike skills with a bunch of words in email or facebook or indeed or wherever? is making a seasonal 'limit' a bad idea? it limits our financial risk, but will also limit the pool of potential applicants. how can we make a comprehensive and accurate list of job descriptions without overwhelming a potential applicant or basicall saying "your job is to do everything!"? and etc. etc. If you have a job description handy that has been successful, maybe you want to paste it into this thread. if you have feedback that doesnt stray too far from some of the questions above, that will be helpful too! First, Your best bet for used parts is to be in town for FRANKEN-BIKE which happens once a month and is more like a swap meet. Unfortunately, there isn't a co-op in Houston at all. At least not in the same vein of Gearin Up, Velocity or Phoenix. There is a "community focused" shop called 3RD WARD BIKE SHOP which sells used parts and bikes. But the prices arent all that great...but they arent set in stone either - so you might get lucky. When a friemd of mine was planning a tour he had some luck calling a few shops and asking if thwy had a used parts bin he could dig thru. None of them advertised it but a few let him. Try Bayou City Cycles, Sun and Ski Sports and Bike Barn. Best of luck... While bike repair and teaching skills aren't part of the job, they're always an asset, as is experience with community bike shops.
