Aftermarket chainguards for kids' bikes

Folks - I rescue, repair, and donate bikes in Southern New Hampshire. I often get single speed kids' bikes that do not have chainguards. I am afraid that single speed bikes without a chainguard are a potentially unsafe for a younger rider and I will not give them out. So I have 2 questions: 1. Does anyone know of a good source of kid sized aftermarket universal chainguards? 2. Am I being too paranoid? I realize that the kids that get these bikes or their parents can remove the chainguards any time in the future and probably will remove them if they get bent or misaligned. On the other hand, it would only take a second to lose a finger if a kid were to put a finger into a chain ring - I have a scar from a tandem timing chain/chainring that I inadvertently got caught in and it does not take much to cause real damage. We are looking for ten great places to join this exciting new project - places where community leaders have ambitious plans to create safe and comfortable places to ride and encourage their neighbors and co-workers to give it a try. We want places that are eager to benchmark their progress and see the benefits of a big jump in biking in healthier people and better communities. Over the next three years, we will work in a diverse portfolio of places, cities, small towns, neighborhoods, suburbs, and downtowns, that have ambitious plans to improve on-the- ground infrastructure and collaborate with the community to get more people on bikes. We are particularly interested in places where bikes can improve access to jobs and opportunity for underserved communities; connect suburban areas to transit hubs and town centers; connect to paths and parks to encourage physical activity, and catalyze the economic potential of tourism. The Big Jump Project builds on the momentum and success of the PeopleForBikes Green Lane Project that helped get protected bike lanes on the ground, into the design toolbox and established them as the gold standard for comfortable biking on busy streets. Similar to the Green Lane Project, The Big Jump Project will provide a package of support to the ten places, including technical advice, leadership development, and national media exposure - sharing the stories of their efforts through reports, videos and social media. Abandoned Bike Ordinance?

Greetings! Through the Delta Bike Project in Mobile, Alabama we are working with city leaders and the Mobile Police Department to update certain ordinances that have neglected to meet the needs of our city. One of those ordinances we seek to create is an ordinance that allows the City/Police to recover abandoned bicycles that have been chained up for some (unknown) extended amount of time. We hope that the Delta Bike Project could be the recipient of those bikes for inclusion into our Time is Money Program <http://www.deltabikeproject.org/time-is-money-program/>. It's also a way to clear up our very limited amount of bike parking - something we're also working on through various fundraisers and agreements of understanding to install fixit stations and bike racks. Are there examples from this group of ordinances in your city that allow public safety officials or others to recover abandoned bikes? Do you have examples of that language that you can share? Also, are there other similar ordinances that are good to accompany these? We are lucky to have the ear of the City Leaders and the Police Department, so we would be ever grateful for feedback on this issues. At Reno Bike Project we did public giveaways of light sets (not the best, they were free from the DOT, but better than none). We had them available at our community bike shop and gave them away during 2-3 hour pop-up events in public places (bus stations, popular intersections, university campus) with an RBP brochure and some bike safety literature. Our only rule was that we'd only give one set away per person with their bike (no extra sets for friends who weren't present or without seeing the bike). We also gave a few away to people using wheelchairs, no problem. We had a lot of success in distributing them and talking to/educating passers-by. Unfortunately, we found out after a couple years that the front light wasn't, in fact, bright enough to meet the NRS on bike lights at night, and people were getting ticketed by the cops. So NDOT kind of screwed up on that one. I digress; am attaching the survey we asked recipients to complete in return for their lights. Light giveaway structure

Howdy, I've heard other folks share that they give away headlight or taillights through their programs. Do you have any sort of structure to that? Paperwork? Rules? Guidelines? We are hoping to give away quality light kits that'll be used long term so we are trying to seek out how others have approached similar situations. Has anyone done a Memorandum of Agreement?

Our organization has been asked to come up with an MOA for a bike mechanics education program that we provide to at-risk youth and adults. One of the features of the program, is that we've been able to place at least one of the participants who was unemployed long term before the program in a job at a local bike shop. We also do an earn-a-bike with the participants. It seems like a really good idea to have a boiler plate MOA that we could use when we do elementary school bike clubs (we've done two), and high school earn-a-bike and mechanics programs. Does anyone have an MOA that you've used for similar programs? We don't want to be too rigid and scare partners away, or make it too difficult for ourselves to stick to them. But we also need to get an idea of what should be covered and how specific and binding an MOA needs to be. Thanks in advance, Randi Direct email Randi(a)hjfw.org
