I think a central component of the "magazine" section and resource library should be zines. They are almost always local, place-specific, and grassroots. There are some seriously awesome zines out there - about bike trailer construction, commuting, and tons more - the best local zine here in Minneapolis is Dames on Frames, a feminist analysis of the biking movement locally and globally. Microcosm publishing has a great collection available for purchase (and it's super easy to set up a wholesale account with them). The other suggested books are great. We were informed by our kids' pediatrician that infants under 1 year of age should NOT ride in trailers behind bikes due to the potential brain injury from the jostling. I noticed that the adaptive soft, snuggling seats all spoke about use in their "strollers" to jog with. An infant too young could easily be injured (even if not visibly) while in a trailer. I do however think it can depend if you have a cheap trailer vs. a model with shock absorption features etc. Also if you are on a newly paved road vs. an older bumpy road. Continual shaking of a newborn on a bike ride is not something I'd recommend though. Bob - Child carriers are an absolute MUST for mom and dad to have! They have those you've linked and also slings/mei tai are options as well. They're great for any time you need free hands, happy babies, and hiking of course. As far as putting it into a bike trailer for security.. I can't recommend that as they can be unsturdy, bulky, and may not fit in properly. I've seen dozens of parents come to the downtown farmers market with infants in trailers under 12 months! I haven't done it myself, but have been commuting with my toddler for a almost a full year now. I'd stick with a Chariot for an infant and then Burley as a runner up for trailer choices. I do recommend waiting until your infant can sit up though which would occur sometime between 4-7 months. There is always public transportation and taking turns with dad staying home when going out. How many bikes can you make from a hummer I hope this Comm major is enlightened in this interaction. but on the other hand does it mater how we get them out of the car and on to the bike a good deal of the lemmings in cars didn't make the choice to drive from their point of view they had no options cars were just what people do to survive. The times are only going to make it harder for us and better in the long run for our movement. In Los Angeles " fixed gear hipsters" are every where or so i am told when i see someone on a bike, fixed or not, i see one less car. If it becomes chic to use bicycles we win! If style mavens every where identify with bicycles we win! still I would be inclined not to be interviewed by this guy we have a long way to go. Summer Northeast Bike Collective Documentary (i need volunteers for places I can stay and shoot)

Hey! My name's Cris Shirley, I'm a student at Yale in Environmental Studies, and I'm making documentary on bike collectives in the northeast for my senior thesis (Environmental Studies degree). I'm planning to start shooting at the beginning of the summer, riding my bike to the collectives, and staying for around a week. I'm trying to get my contacts and schedule laid out now so I can pack in a much over the summer as possible. I wanted to give collectives a heads up, and if your interested in getting filmed, or your collective included, or if you could host me for a bit of time in town, etc. Any references to people or places that might be good to film would be great too. Also, I'm looking for some *stock footage* or stuff that's been shot on bike collectives that I might be able to include in my documentary, so I'd like to talk to anyone that has done any camera or audio work that might be interested in sharing. On that note, any *music* that has been made that works with theme of collectives, bikes, etc would be awesome to try to include in the project. In this context it actually means second because they follow the class instructor. Does anyone have ideas about a fair way of who gets the number one spot? Expanding Shop Hours - what happens?

UBP is currently open two days of the week, one Thursday night and one Saturday afternoon. We are considering opening another weeknight, as our current hours sometimes get really, really crowded. For anyone that has recently expanded their hours or can recall when you did so in the past: Did opening more hours decrease traffic on your other open days, or merely become another busy night? We are entering our second year of operation, still growing and anticipate being even more crowded this year. The bicycle kitchen is open 6 days a week and for 29 hours in those days if we were open for more than that we would be full If you open and they don't come then go back. But really it is more can you staff the additional days. During Spring and into the Summer it is barely-managed chaos in our shop, but we make it through (upon moving into our new shop we've added a second volunteer staff position to help manage things). Ever since we allowed do-it-yourself repair on every shift we've struggled to meet that demand, because we could have all four workstands humming every night, but that would crowd out the volunteers. And the volunteers are the ones that fix up the bikes that pay our rent. The DIY only adds minimally to our bottom line, but we all feel it's important that folks have a place to fix their own bikes. So we carry on... Last summer I started staffing Sundays from 3-6 (to fit my schedule that day) and made it a volunteer-only shift - no DIY, and no sales. The turnout was not as good as I'd hoped, but even through this winter I've had from one to six vols. attending. But if I made it a DIY day I'd be swamped. Now for this coming Spring we're looking at opening on Mondays during the day and Saturday afternoons, using paid staff (the other weekdays have our partner org. using our shop for training purposes). The Mondays will be like the evenings - open to all, and we'll test the demand. But the Saturdays will most likely be just sales and volunteers, because even with two staff the DIY demand would probably be over the top. Maybe we'll add DIY in the Summer after the Spring sales settle down... Women/Trans night logistics

Well, I'm as ready as I'll ever be to launch a women's/trans night this year. I've had a great time teaching my little sisters to wrench (who had never touched tools). Some questions: -- How's the turn out, really? We're in a pretty small (albeit college) town, and although I imagine all kinds of women showing up, does it end up just one "type"? Are they decidedly social events, or completely focused on learning, or somewhere in between? -- Do you have regulars, or is it new people every time? -- What kind of promotion seems to work? Are fliers sufficient? -- Do people show up right on time, or trickle through the night? I'm working in the project every day anyway, so if half an hour goes by and no one's showed, I'm apt to go home (and thus severly discourage late-comers from trying again). -- Do you use some kind of teaching structure, or just go through each person's bike? -- Have further layers of discrimination been an issue? For instance are "normal" people put off by people who "look like lesbians"? Are trannies alienated? How do you deal with this if so? -- Do you lock the door and let people in one-by-one? I know that having to knock might be enough to keep someone as socially anxious as me from coming. The other option is to run off the males who can't or won't read a sign on the door and come in anyway. Even uncombatively, that sounds distracting. How do you do it? Can't think of anything else at the moment. Didn't see anything on the wiki, so feel free to give me any advice or just a general overview. Anything you think might be helpful. Thanks! andrea

avenues for reporting bad behavior?

Hi, folks. Here's a dilemma. Sometimes lousy behavior goes on in the Sopo shop or at affiliated events, and it goes unnoticed by the folks who typically defend the intended safety of the space. Then sometimes that behavior doesn't get reported to staff/core volunteers until it's snowballed into a bigger problem. The lag in reporting seems to indicate that we need a better and safer way for people to let us know that something of the line-crossing nature occurred. (Let's just assume for the sake of conversation that we're doing everything we can to control for bad behavior in the first place. Obviously, that's what we're striving for and we wish it worked 100% of the time.) Does anyone have a solution or process for this kind of thing? Grievance forms? Anything? Thanks! Hi, I'm curious how many shops loan out trailers in some form or another. how many trailer share/rental program are there through advocacy organization? if you have one in your area, please describe it. If you have general ideas of how often trailers get borrowed in your area, i'd love to hear about that too. My impression is that a nuimber of these programs exist, but they are under-utilized. I need more data points. help me out. Cheers.

I am not sure what type of trailer you are writing of. I have a 5x8 utility trailer that I tow behind my truck when I need to move 30+ bikes at a time. This is extremely useful not only to our program, but also a cooperative in Denver where last year I delivered 240 bikes that were surplus to me and of greater use to them. As for the trailers that you tow behind a bike we have had a handful donated to our program and pass these on to parents who wish to tow their kids when they ride. (Important and little known fact of towing kids:Tthe infants MUST be at least 1 year old to ride in these trailers to prevent brain injury from the jostling around as they ride.)
