Bike components looking for homes

Hello, After a year of lock downs and restricted sales, we are overflowing with used bike parts. Everything from kickstands to handlebars to tires to chainrings and everything in between. Are there any organizations that could use a large quantity of these items? Somebody like Bikes not Bombs or Mike's Bike Foundation? If you know of any please let me know. I do not think the promotion of bicycling should be in such an antagonistic position that degrades all forms of possible transport. This has been a mistaken path that too much of the bicycling community has been following, one which has been a detrimental to all in the sphere of safety, access, and progress in a comprehensive design for all modal forms. I'm the Education & Outreach Manager for Red Bike, the nonprofit bikeshare system serving Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky, with 60 stations and 600 classic and electric assist bicycles. We're hiring and looking for rad folks to join our Outreach Team. All positions posted here <https://www.cincyredbike.org/jobs>, with detailed descriptions, including pay, requirments, schedules, etc. Red Bike was recently designated as a Living Lab City by the Better Bike Share Partnership <https://betterbikeshare.org/2021/02/17/meet-5-grantees-out-to-transform-bik…>, a national organization dedicated to building equitable and replicable shared micromobility systems. As a Living Lab, we'll continue to develop and test innovative, new strategies and programs to increase access to bikeshare in the region through our Red Bike Go Program <https://www.cincyredbike.org/gopass>. We're hiring an Outreach & Member Management Assistant, as well as an intern. We've also partnered with our local bicycle cooperative, MoBo Bicycle Cooperative <http://www.villagegreenfoundation.org/mobo-bicycle-co-op/>, on a joint Youth Programs Coordinator position. And, operationally, we're still looking for another System Technician. I recognize it's a weird/challenging time to move and that these are part-time positions, but sharing in case you or someone you know might be interested, and also as reference for nonprofit bikeshare efforts and bike collective collaboration. I cannot recommend coloured tags enough. We started using coloured tags 6-7 years ago and they immediately reduced the amount of confusion. Someone who knows the system can at a glance tell a lot more about the status of a bike! Intake + Repair Guides

Hiya pals, lots to report on from NYC, some good, some hard, but for the moment I wanted to send around the latest and probably final version of my handy repair guide. This is intended as a teaching tool to help people in the shop work more autonomously on bike fixing, regardless of their level of skill. There are two PDFs attached. The first one is for intake, as in, "do we want to repair this bike or strip and scrap it?" The second is for bikes that have passed through intake successfully. It gives a step-by-step repair guide -- not a "how to," but a "what to." It's meant to help especially newer mechanics move through a bike's systems, well, systematically, in a way that supports their learning and praxis. Hi, I’m on the board of a community bike shop in Ontario, Canada. We’ve been approached by the HR of a company curious if we would offer a bulk membership to their staff at a discount. We see it adding community building and promotional value as well. Has anyone done anything like this and how much did you discount? We’re assuming only half the staff of the company would use the membership, but don’t really have any experience to base that on either. Our current membership gets you use of the space tools and expertise of staff its $40/year for an individual. best use of vertical space

Hi all, We’ve just moved our shop, and the front part of the main room has an 18-foot ceiling! We are looking into an overhead grid system from which to hang the usual tires and wheels, but there’ll still be those tall walls… So I’d love to find out what others may have done with a similar room. Hey Cory! I currently run a bicycle workshop out of a 30ft x 10ft container (3 workstations), previously ran a pilot from a 20ft x 8ft6" container (2 workstations, minimal storage)......answering your questions... I've been offered a shipping container in a BMX park to use for a fledgling co-op. /each shipping container has a unique ID - much like a car registration plate - use this to find the year and history - if the container is very old and/or damaged/too rusty, you may be better off with another./ I want to hear from others who operate out of containers. What has your experience been like? What challenges does operating out of a container present that a traditional retail/warehouse space does not? How do you address those challenges? /space is the main concern, then temperature, then functionality..../ /8ft 6" is difficult - you can setup workstands here but with internal insulation and fitouts it will be a squeeze...unless...you have wall mounted stands and access one side only / /w.r.t temperature you have two options - totally sealed with spray insulation (about £2500 for a small container in London UK, though highly toxic and bad for the environment) or glass-fibre insulation and allowing the unit to 'breathe' through vents - I chose the latter/ /whatever you do, avoid cutting holes in the roof or walls - the strength of the container is due to the corrugation - also you'd avoid leaks and potential security weaknesses / /another thing? NEVER place the container on soil where the bottom of the container touches the ground - containers can rust and rot easily. Also, for this reason, I coated ours with 4 coats of Hammerite and the roof with an additional 2 coats of bitumen paint / / / My plan is to provide tools and two or three stands (spaced very generously apart) for DIY service as well as a small selection of new consumables (cables, housing, ferrules, etc) on a PWYC basis. /I built all the racking and timber fitout on both containers - advice....use std size containers and build the racking around this (or just buy custom heavy duty racking if you have budget). If using a std 20ft x 8'6" container you can get 2 stands in, if a std 40ft, 4 stands/ /conventional container fitouts in the UK use 6mm ply and 44mm timber. I used what I could access (18mm ply and 2" x 4" timber) and was so glad I had these! the walls are strong enough (especially with battens) for hanging shelving and bikes etc...though the overall weight is high/ Partially finance the above by selling refurbished donated bikes. /depends where you are but where I am this is not a money-earner - servicing is where the income is/ Provide a small selection of used parts (taken from donated bikes that aren't safe/worth refurbishing) on a PWYC basis. /good idea - ensure everything is tested first where possible or offer on the basis of 'sold as seen'/ All of this will be on a seasonal basis. May-Oct. If it lasts longer than this season, I'll grow it as I'm able in the future. /the current container has walls and ceiling insulated with 50mm recycled glass-bottle fibre insulation behind 18mm ply. We are running a community bicycle shop out of shipping container. Insulation and ventilation is very important. We used the stuff in the link below. Even though the container facebook pages said don't do it. It has worked for us. Spray foam may be the best, I don’t know. Hey all, A lot of you know me from Bike Farm, which is an all volunteer run bike collective here in Portland, OR. Recently, I took up the role of Executive Director for the Community Cycling Center, a non-profit that's been broadening access to bicycles, and keeping them out of the land fills, for 26 years!! It's an interesting move from all volunteers to a staff of 35. I'm hoping to attend the next BikeBike (should it be safe to do so) and maybe we can continue the conversation around paid vs. employee organizations. Anyhow, on the ask/offer. Successful interventions for interrupting sexism

Hi everyone We ran a volunteer induction working bee today (photo attached), and despite our best intentions, sexism was a constant companion. It wasn't over the top, just the everyday: Woman: "how do I...?" Man: "let me show you..." 10 minute later, man still holding the spanner. Many times, multiple circumstances. Unrequested advice is another common form. The problem is that it is baked into the cultural dynamics. It is tricky to interrupt without making everyone feel bad. I've got a personal policy that I try to follow: - don't touch bike unless requested, - don't offer information unless questioned, or someone about to hurt themselves, - watch, listen But that takes much patience, and comes after 20 years of anti sexism work. It is a bit of a stretch for our 75 year old volunteer mechanic with a heart of gold. I'm looking for something pragmatic that we can implement, to interrupt the worst of it, to make some space. I wanted to explore how best to steward and model the behaviours and values needed to co-create a unified, compassionate, kind, empowered, meritocratic and resilient team and thus community. If I had more time and resources, I'd like to have team days exploring things like this.
