We've got two very exciting and impactful positions to fill at the Boise Bicycle Project and hope a few of you out there might be interested. I hope to be talking to some of you soon. *Shop Operations Manager: <http://www.boisebicycleproject.org/shop-operations-manager>* In 2017 BBP's team of dedicated volunteers and staff put over 1700 bicycles back onto the streets of Boise, including 800 to kids in our programs. We have 600 active members using the shop on a regular basis and another 1400 folks who use the shop as "walk/ride-ins." We have 14 staff members (5 full time) that operate our programs and foster an empowering and educational atmosphere to the Boise community and beyond regardless of income. The Shop Operations Manager oversees the daily activities that make all of the above possible for our community members, and the sales that provide funding for our programs. Shifting Gears currently operates at the South Boise Women’s Correctional Center, partners with the East Boise Re-Entry Center at the BBP, and is starting a program at the Idaho State Men's Correctional Center. This person’s responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to, BLAST support and enhancement, bicycle safety educator, public outreach coordinator and local advocate for bicycling access and infrastructure. Displaying Freewheel & Cassette Tools, spline tree and helm pix

In a corner of our shop we keep specialty or large tools on both a labeled board and in toolboxes. For patrons new to our shop or unfamiliar with the tools, volunteers usually grab the tools. Otherwise, we keep everything labeled and (hopefully) easy enough for folks to find. Pics attached! Heyyo! I've been in co-ops where they have neat ways of displaying the various freewheel and cassette tools, like on a board next to the hub types they fit. Is YOUR shop one of these? Looking for HR and Compensation policies

Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, DE is growing and we need to get better policies in place for addressing HR and Compensation issues. As a member of the Board of Directors and an active volunteer I'm charged with developing some policies, procedures and guidelines for managing employees, including roles and responsibilities of Board members and the Executive Director. Health Hazard from Drum Brakes

Hi everyone, I recently came across a vendor selling a drum brake[1] where they claimed it had "No asbes" i.e. no asbestos. This led me to search about asbestos in bicycle brakes, and indeed it's a thing: http://santanatandem.com/Library/AraiDBrakeIns.pdf <http://santanatandem.com/Library/AraiDBrakeIns.pdf> (go to page 2, paragraph 4 in "Service") The quantity is small and it's not friable, it's solid chunks (like old chemistry lab benches) which pose no actual hazard. Unless you are frequently overhauling these drum brakes with abrasives & sucking in the dust, the risk should be negligible, but it's good to know about. If any shops out there have a bin for drum brakes, I'd suggest putting a warning label on it, or attaching a tag to the individual brakes if they are in a mixed bin. We at the Elyria (Ohio) Bicycle Education Center are pretty new to much of how to run a coop and shop. We appreciate the collective intelligence being shared here. We are looking for a good and inexpensive way to display bikes in our front 'sales room' without relying on kickstands to hold up the bikes (some have'em, some don't). Willing to build wood racks or whatever but have not seen anything reasonable yet. Sorting parts/bike storage/safer spaces

Hey folks, I have three questions that I’m hoping to get input on: 1. Do any of you have good resources with pictures and text about what to look for when you are sorting through old parts and trying to determine what to keep and what to scrap? I am looking for something that I can use to help train volunteers as a guide for them to follow when they are going through old parts bins. 2. I am looking to build the cheapest possible medium-term bike storage that allows me to use some vertical space. I was thinking essentially just a platform that would go against a wall and bikes would be stored underneath and on top. This is for bikes we are building up now to sell in the spring so we want to pack them in and likely will take off pedals and re-orient handlebars. If anyone had a simple plan to follow it would make my life easier. 3. I’m wondering if any folks have good policies, processes or training for ensuring that your spaces are safer spaces for women, people of colour, LGBT2Q*, people with disabilities, newcomers, refugees etc. I am especially wondering how to make sure that it is easy to bring volunteers on while ensuring there is some sort of training or code of conduct to ensure that they know how to help create a safer space. Input on Tasks for Drop-In Volunteers

Hello Pals!!!!!!!! Systems are shaping up at the Mechanical Gardens in NYC, and we're looking to develop more structure for drop-in volunteers. This includes irregular volunteers and regulars too. *What are some of the ways **you'd recommend **to do this well?* And what resources can you share? - PDFs of handouts from your shops or snapshots of things like task boards would be super helpful, as would other advice! - We want a balance of "low barrier for entry" tasks and "guidance or skill required" tasks. - We would love to hear your insights on how to frame these things to be learning and empowerment experiences instead of just "hey do this thing bye" or "hey do this thing while I hover over you." ALSO ALSO PLEASE LOOKIE: We're posing this as a question to everyone, *but* would primarily love to hear from some women/trans/femme/gender non-conforming organizers, if anyone who identifies that way is inclined to jump into the thread. Partly this is because the ThinkTank is often very male-dominated, and partly it's because in our shop, at least, cismen are way more likely to jump into / blunder through participating without structures to invite them in or help them contribute in the best way possible.
