Paid Staff - Where to Begin

I am soliciting the advice of fellow cooperatives who currently employ paid staffers. Our organization has grown enough in it's 10 year history that we are prepared to bring on a part time paid staffer for the summer and fall months of next year. If there is anyone who would feel comfortable chatting with me either via a series of emailed questions or over the phone I would greatly appreciate it. Our goals with a paid staffer are primarily to alleviate the task of some of the less enticing jobs from our volunteers, to set the stage for being open more hours, and to dedicate a resource to further develop fund-generating streams like eBay and Craigslist. Feel free to reply with general commentary to the list or contact me privately to speak directly. I am open to any and all advice or criticism as our organization explores this next big step. The role of the Bike Kitchen Manager is an all-encompassing position and is the most senior role in the shop. The Manager is in charge of managing daily operations, as well as providing business direction. The Manager is also expected to be a proficient mechanic and repair bikes daily. The Manager reports to the Bike Co-op Board of Directors, who provide only broad direction. The Manager must keep the organization's mission in mind and oversee that the Bike Kitchen continues to act as an inclusive, positive space. The Manager must act as mechanic, staff manager, and business director. We considered this fairly extensively, including drafting a few designs and pricing the parts/toold/time to put it together. We found that it was MUCH simpler and about the same cost to get a Fixit Station from Dero. When I approached the Transportation Demand Management Planner for the City and told her about the project, they were actually really supportive of the idea--Peterborough now has four Fixit stations which were purchased by the city and our shop is paid by the city to maintain them! That said, the vast majority of people using the station use the pump. We have had many problems with the Dero pumps and actually just replaced them with the outdoor gauged pumps from Fixtation. So far, we are really pleased and they work very well. It was started in 2011 with the help of two teenage interns at a community-based bike shop in Brooklyn, NY called Recycle-A-Bicycle – a sister-organization of Bike Works. The teens had just traveled to Washington, DC for the first time ever to attend the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Summit. While they were awe-struck by all they had learned – from the Safe Routes to School bill, to lobbying elected officials on Capitol Hill, to exploring the nation’s capital by bike, and even to meeting mountain bike pioneer Gary Fisher – they couldn’t help but wonder where all the young people were. For if bicycle policy affected all cyclists, then certainly all cyclists should be represented at the decision-making table. As the team debriefed their experiences, a blueprint for the Youth Bike Summit began to emerge. While the teens initially hoped for a moderate showing of youth, educators, and bicycle advocates from the New York area, it quickly became clear that the the Youth Bike Summit would attract a much broader audience – from near and (very) far! For each and every year that followed, the Youth Bike Summit, its impact, and its momentum, continued to grow. In 2014, the conference welcomed more than 500 youth and adult participants from 26 states and 4 countries. Friends and allies, Bike Pirates would like to announce that we are currently in search of a new home for 2015! We are excited to start a new chapter and to have you all along for the exciting years ahead. Our hope is to be settling into a new, bigger and better space in January which should have the least impact on our operations. But we need your help! We will need hands to help sort, pack and move out of our home on Bloor Street. We will also need lots of help and skilled individuals to help build and set up our new home. Shop Liability Insurance- who are you using these days?

Hi all, We at the Durham Bike Co-op are on the market for a new shop liability insurance carrier to cover our assets, our volunteers, and their assets. What carrier have you had good success with? Who should we avoid? And to those shops that don't carry it, holy crap, I totally suggest you should. We recently had a patron's health insurance company come after us because of an accident on our premises, and saved us a good amount of hassle by having our insurance deal with it. What is the size of your centre? How much space do we need?

Heya Heya Spokes, We are in the process of looking for a new space that will fit all of our activities and bikes!!! We hope to have enough room for a shop with 4 bikes stands, workshop delivery, a small retail sales areas for parts and swag,about 20 recycle-a- bikes, and 20 rental bikes. For any of you out there that have a good size space would you be able to send the dimensions of your space? We are trying to figure out how much room we need!! I remember visiting Our Community Bikes in Vancouver and Goodlife in Calgary which both have good sized spaces but I have lost the direct contact information to ask them directly so if anyone from either of those organizations are on this list I would be really curious about the size of your locations!!
