wheel storage hooks

Our free, plentiful favorite for storing wheels is the long arm of a side pull brake. It has a hole for a big headed nail or screw. You can use a washer to keep nail/screw from pulling through. This hook is strong and can hold one wheel, or two thinner rimmed wheels. With the arm twist, you have to pay attention to the direction orientation, and sometimes we modify the twist, using a vice. With the slight lip at the top of the arm, it is best to afix this type of hook on the edge of a wood beam, although the arms/hooks work just fine on a blank, flat wall too. They are on one of our wheel tripods, which we have modified since the picture. http://strans.org/communityshop.html We also have a few hundred wheels on a tall wall in our ped tech warehouse- in that case we used 20d nails I think, and nailed at an angle into the studs. Chuck, A couple years ago, the Fort Collins Bike Co-op<http://fcbikecoop.org/programs/earnabike.php>started requiring EAB (earn-a-bike) volunteer time to be completed at an external non-profit organization instead of in our shop. This has turned out to be a great decision as it requires less supervision from our volunteers and provides hundreds of volunteer hours to the community each year. We haven't pursued any educational component, but have considered requiring recipients to watch a 30 minute bike safety video. This would cover problem topics in our community like riding on the right side of the street, using lights and other basics. This model does eliminate the ability for recipients to learn about basic bike mechanics before they receive their bike. fundraising bike trips

My name is Rick McFerrin. I am the founder of a charity called TWO WHEEL VIEW. We use the bike as a tool to educate youth on the environment and culture of north America and abroad through bicycle education and expedition programs (www.twowheelview.org). For the past 7 years we have been raising money for TWO WHEEL VIEW youth programs by taking adults on a bike trip in Argentina. Kind of like a Ride for the Cure but this is a 2-week trip with the focus on raising money to support students - from where we live - so that they can participate on TWV student bicycle expeditions. Everyone pays their own way and pledges to raise some money for the charity. Each year we usually get 8 to 11 adults to participate on the ride. This year there are only 5 signed up so far and the trip is in March. We may be exhausting our local reach and need to get the word out to a broader audience. Does anyone have any suggestions for reaching out to a broader community of supporters for events like this. Last year we raised more than $20,000 with 11 adults participating. When it works, it's great for funding students who would not otherwise have the opportunity for summer trips. Thanks for ideas. My name is Enzo, I'm the board secretary from The Bikerowave in Los Angeles (www.bikerowave.org). We have decided to host bici bici 2012 here in Los Angeles. The current plan is to have this take place on April 13-15th. The 15th will also be CicLAvia here in Los Angeles. We are still in the early stages of planning this but we anticipate a lot of help from the many other bike Co-ops in LA. I hope to see many of you folks from around the west coast down here so we can share our experiences and discuss ways to make it so we do what we do better than before. Please keep your calendars clear for this weekend and look forward to hearing more from us as the planning progresses. Here in Jackson, MI, we've developed a good relationship with a local auto shop. They throw our old tires with their old tires for no charge. I estimate recycling a couple hundred per year. The relationship was they key. Goodness from the list

In early November, Paul Slater of BicycleXchange in Jupiter FL posted to this list that he'd been contacted by someone about donated bikes to be picked up in Sanibel, a mostly retirement enclave 2 hours south of Tampa Bay. After a couple of rounds of emails between me, Paul and the family of the deceased "Bike Man" of Sanibel, some friends and I rented a U-Haul this past weekend and went down to extract the bikes from a mobile home attic. In the (no more than 18")space between the ceiling and aluminum roof of a singlewide mobile, the Bike Man had stored nearly 50 disassembled bikes. Vintage Raleigh, Puch, Peugot and Panasonic, Schwinn Ross frames, hundreds of wheels and even some Mongoose Motomags. Boxes and boxes of chainrings, tubes, even a box full of shiny bright vintage chrome bells. A folding Raleigh, a 1960s tandem, road, mountain and cruiser bikes, so much for a new bike nonprofit to get started with that we're agog at the new possibilities. Here in Ontario there is a tire recycling program: https://www.ontariots.ca/sp/index.html But they won't take bike tires. For the past five years we've been paying $1 per tire to have our dead ones properly recycled. All of the regular retail shops aside from MEC just throw theirs out (to the best of my knowledge). I'd really like the OTS to include bike tires, and our shop is willing to be a drop- off point. I've written to my MPP but no action from him as of yet (only an acknowledgment by his staff that my email was received). REALLY Cleaning Chains

Hi everybody, We've been getting really into upcycling bike parts here at Bike Recycle Vermont -- we sell jewelry and fun products at local artists' markets to raise money for the shop. We love making jewelry with the ever-iconic bike chain, but getting it clean is so time and labor intensive. *Has anyone found an effective way to clean multiple chains at once, and I mean reallyclean them out, get them grease-free and bone dry to the point that you'd wear the thing around your neck? * We tried a parts cleaner, we tried bringing them to a car wash... each time we still ended up going at each chain with a tooth brush and some degreaser and spending 15 minutes scrubbing it. Wet Winter Bikes

Hi All, The Peterborough Community Bike Shop recently moved out of a church basement and into a beautiful space in a historic downtown building. For the first time we find ourselves concerned about the floors! In the summer we have carpet down, but as the wet winter bikes roll in, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for dealing with the ice and snow melt... Boot mats? Cardboard? Layers of carpet? Custom built trays? What do you use to catch the water with as fenders and frames de-ice in your shop? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
