Attendance Tracking

Hi all, What are you all doing to track attendance at your programs? Currently each kid that walks through our door is assigned their own sign-in sheet and is asked to sign-in each day that they come in (see attached sign-in sheet). This past year or so it has been an ongoing challenge to get kids to sign-in each day. We have tried to explain the importance of the data, but often times kids simply forget! What are you all doing to more accurately track the kids that access your programs on a daily, monthly, yearly basis? I have been researching different online solutions or "cooler" ways to sign-in, but all options are way too pricy! Your ideas would certainly be a huge help!!!! Large bicycle donation of used bikes Needs home

Hello, This is Paul Slater, of the BicycleXchange (BXC). I received an email from someone whom wishes to donate approx 150 bikes some disassembled and mostly maintained. The bikeb are located on Sanibel Island (West Coast of Florida) coming out of storage units. I was wondering if there is a collective not yet added to the directory that may want the donation. We are just out of reach to get them however it could be rewarding because it is such an affluent area. It seems the public is using the current directory for contacts. I know a few small coops that im encouraging to join. Thank you and hope to hear back soon. I have requested pictures to see the stash...I will share them when i get 'em. Bike Collectives Newsletter?

Hey folks, it's probably not a new idea but especially with upcoming information about Bike!Bike! I've been toying with the idea of starting a no-reply mailing list. There's a lot of logistics that we'd have to get worked out and it's something that I scarcely have time to administer but I wanted to get a general room temperature on this. One idea that I had that might help us smooth out some other issues as well was to replace the content on bikecollectives.org with a sign up form for bike collectives (not touching the wiki of course). Bike collectives would sign up as an organization giving their general email address and location and possibly a few other details. We could talk about having a few administrators that could send out notices, likely at most one a month although probably much more rarely than that and in addition we could use the information to know more about our community at large. This would also open up the possibility of putting bikecollectives.org to better use. My main concern is that, due to the nature of the think tank (long discussions, off-topic discussions, in-fighting) we are keeping many organizations in the dark about information that we would like them to know about. I'd appreciate any feedback and possibly volunteers! Thanks!.godwin

Hi Everyone, My name is Shah Mohamed. Some of you know me by some other child hood name or nick name. We have all met and hung-out, spent time together sharing an experience or two and in the larger context, shared life. I have great respect and admiration for you all. The Advocacy Advance Program was created to draw down federal funding to be spent on biking and walking, so it would be crucial to ensure that an application addresses drawing down federal funding. Any Alliance and League member is welcomed to apply for such funding. With the increasing number of community bike shops (or like organizations) playing an advocacy role in their community, there is definite potential in this area. I don't personally handle the Advocacy Advance Program and Grants, but I have copied Brighid O'Keane, our Advocacy Advance Program Manager, on this email so that you and her can connect to discuss further. community bike shops need bikable roads

Fellow community shops, We have been working on a good bikable community since our inception in 1996. We could not in good conscious work on getting more people on bikes without working on city design and street issues. We have had success: changing 4-lane roads to 3-lane roads and putting in bike lanes in the reclaimed space, getting _single lane_ roundabouts instead of stop lights, narrowing 12' travel lanes to 10' which often helps get in bike lanes, changing parking lanes to bike lanes, connecting urban trails and increasing transit for instance. Current projects include getting a downtown 'piazza' or car-free plaza, switching asphalt to pine resin or other alternative for bike walk trails, and- the hardest- working to stop a couple major roadway expansions and instead going with bike/walk/transit solutions. Shop software

Hey folks, for those that are interested I've made some of the first steps in creating a suite of utilities that can be used for all the stuff we need to do on a daily basis. As of right now, I've created some Drupal modules that can be used to administer users and sales, so if you're by chance currently running Drupal 7 and are in need of this kind of thing, then you can probably start getting it set up soon. Eventually I'll be developing this so it can be used on any web site and likely offline too and there will be much more functionality than just shop administration. You can check out the demo version here: test.bikeroot.ca/members/shop. If you want to try it out you'll need to create a fake account, this is only because the system sends automatic emails on registration and purchases which are all directed your account in the demo. There's probably some bugs in there so you'd be doing me a favour by trying it out and giving me feedback if you feel like it. I'm hoping for late spring to be able to release something with basic functionality that can be used by anyone that needs it; that might be optimistic however. At that point I'll hopefully be able to reconnect with some of the developers that met concerning this in San Marcos for help expanding its functionality. .godwin

Start-up Shop Tool/supply Lists?

Hey all, Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul, MN has become a growing resource for supporting small start-up bike repair programs at schools, community centers, and now potentially the (basement of the) Science Museum of Minnesota! Does anybody have any lists of tools/supplies that provide solid starting direction for a new program? My vision is to have a list of recommended tools that a start-up space might purchase (using wholesale costs) for $1,000 and also a $3,000 or $5,000 level (including more benches, truing stands, etc). This would be very useful for small to medium grant applications without having to reinvent the wheel each time. If anyone has any resources they're generated, I'd welcome the opportunity to review and use it! Bikes Not Bombs Hiring Fieldworker Mechanic for Uganda

Seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker for new BNB Project in Uganda Bikes Not Bombs is partnering with St. Mary's Lacor Hospital to launch a new project in Amuru, Northern Uganda to provide bicycles to 300 village health workers. The goal is to improve the health workers' efficiency and productivity in providing health services to people in rural areas of Amuru, with the hope of positively impacting the overall health outcomes in Amuru. In order to do this we must establish the necessary bicycle repair infrastructure in Amuru, train the village health workers in bicycle mechanics, refurbish the bicycles, and prepare the Amuru Village Health Team to sustain the project long-term. Bikes Not Bombs is seeking a Mechanic Fieldworker to help implement this new project in Amuru for a period of 6-9 months starting in January 2012. Winter shut down?

The Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop in Lexington KY has been up and running solidly since last Nov. Our question is, how many shops shut down or tweak their hours during the cold weather months? We do not anticipate closing completely because our shop is used by so many, but we do need to get some rest for the volunteers and work on some education classes. Currently we are open Tuesday 8-11 pm Thursday 6-9 pm Sunday 1-5 pm Currently, thinking about staying open on Sundays during the winter but making Tuesday and education night and then closing on Thursday till spring when we can start to build up a lot of sale bikes.
