Hi all, I remember some groups talking at bike!bike! about a free service they used to take in money online. Right now, we use google checkout, and we lose a portion of our donations this way. What free services to folks have that don't take a percentage of the donation? Also, are their any good systems for setting up an automatic payment for classes? For example, sometimes people who sign up for our paid eight-week classes don't end up showing up and giving us a check on the first day, and then we're either under-filled or scrambling to make up the student. I would like to get their inquiry emails, answer their questions, and in my replies, include a link to a secure site (not open to the public, so we can monitor class enrollment) where the soon-to-be student pays the class fee upfront, when they sign up. Then the option to back out will be gone, and people won't reserve seats they don't actually end up using or paying for. It might be okay to have a "store" for classes, alternately, as long as we can only "sell" a certain number at each time. However, I like the secret page idea because then we can keep an eye on if four buddies sign up for the same class or it's six men, no women, etc. and control enrollment (as well as directing people towards classes we now will fill on-time). Bike Magazines at the Dentist

Bike Enthusiasts, About a year ago I was sitting in the waiting room of my dentist sifting through the array of magazines they have, you know the type; Mademoiselle, Good Housekeeping, Time, People... I thought it'd be a good idea to get bikes in the mix of info and gave a subscription of Bike and Bicycle magazines. This cost me $30 for the two one year subscriptions. I just renewed the Bike subscription for two years for $20. It's a small gift that helps get bicycles on the minds of more people. Next time you're in a waiting room have a look at the magazine offerings and consider adding bikes to the mix. All-- I think what Andrea meant to say in her first post was, "Dude, your radio show is going to be four men talking about bikes! But half the population is female, and both men and women need to hear what important roles women have played and are playing now in bike advocacy (and everything else . . . ). Wouldn't you agree? There are tons of rad women in the L.A. bike scene -- why can't you have some of them on your programs?? And what Jim meant to say in reply was, Andrea-- Shoot, you are so right!!! Duh!!! Do you have any contacts I can use? Would you like to be on the show and discuss women and bicycling? I would love to interview you on the show! To which Andrea meant to say, Jim-- Yeah sure, I could be on your show, but I think you should use local talent, don't you? If you don't know any women bike advocates in L.A., well then dude you aren't paying enough attention! patriarchy

it seems to me many men here are missing the point. have people here encountered the concept of tokenism before? of the history and contemporary use of the concept of "hysterics"? or of even of patriarchy itself (as opposed to plain sexism)? have people read any of the ideas of feminists about how patriarchy functions? if not, this might be a really good time to familiarize yourself. bell hooks, who was mentioned before, is one of a plethora of possibilities, and is a good starting point. in general when dealing with oppression, it's tempting for members of the dominant group (in this case, males) to want to invent the idea of the "other" "bad males" as the problem, so they can feel pure and good in themselves, and to look only at explicit individual sexist acts, ignoring how deeply patriarchy is woven into the fabric of our society. for the same reasons, when confronted with patriarchy in the bike shop, many men will turn the question into "how can we convince more women to work here with us" instead of "how can we change our own behaviour to be less patriarchal." i hope the distinction is clear. we don't need any more men wasting our time trying to convince us that we've got them all wrong and that they couldn't possibly be sexist because some of their best friends are women. we need more men to actually spend time working against their own patriarchy, as well as society's. when we start looking closer at our own assumptions about what are "neutral" or "rational" ways of acting, we can uncover some surprising insights into how patriarchy works. one great example might be, say, an admonition that everyone should only ever have a "calm and positive" tone, or that we need to "deep six" dissenters to "restore order, production and prosperity." anyway, i'm sure none of us have too much hope in this email process, so please read up and start putting feminist ideas into practice in your own lives. macho http://bike-dump.ca

New Year!

Hey all, Really I just want to see the subject change, so I'd like to see folks throw out some ideas of wishes, dreams, plans and schemes they are hoping for in the new year. We at Pirates have a few - it always seems hard to implement drastic changes, so the new year seems a good excuse. Here's some things on our list: Changing our locks. there have been a number of key-holders who have come and gone, and we never changed the locks when we first moved into our building. Better security and a better system of designating key-holders is a top priority. Tracking sales. right now all of our cash just goes into the donation box, and not all new parts are *necessarily* paid for in full. We need to ensure we charge for all new items as well as (gulp) starting to charge all applicable taxes and track these sales! Do our taxes for the first time!!! Volunteer training. Right now we just have an orientation to introduce people to the space. We would like to have some basic training, including some anti-o/sensitivity and some way of designating who is a volunteer and who is a participant in the space. Any suggestions or input on the best way to implement any of these changes would be most appreciated. What are your goals for the new year? Ainsley and The Pirates.

We are very lucky to have a volunteer at Pirates who is taking an independent credit for her environmental studies degree which will allow her to get school credit for doing 6-8 hours of work for Bike!Bike! over the next few months. We are going to set her up compiling information, logging contact info and addresses for shops all over the world, as well helping to prepare welcome info packages. more excitingly, she will be doing a lot of research into the previous years' conferences, contacting organizers and finding out how they organized themselves, what their model, budget, schedule, food and funding looked like. We are hoping that this information can be compiled in a manner than will be EASILY accessible and transferable for following years' organizers. As we have said many times here, reinventing the wheel is totally unnecessary but we need a clear, consistent way of transferring information to confidently avoid it. We know that every city will have to do things in a unique way, but are really keen to put together a package that can guide folks through the process of planning, especially in terms of time-lines and person-power. We will be reaching out very soon via ThinkTank for contacts from previous years to pick their brains. Ainsley. Something I've been working on lately is a template for organizing an event and/or a program. It seemed like every time we put on a class, or a workshop or an event, we had to reinvent the thing, since no one had taken notes on what worked or didn't work last time. We've come up with a pretty simple multi-page spreadsheet that helps parse out tasks, duties, and timelines for things. It allows us to document the procedure for setting up an event or class (say, an open house, or a workshop) and then keep track of everything that needs to happen, what allies you can rely on, what their contact info is, other resources, food donors, space resources, all of it. After the event, it's also vital to do post-event evaluations, and include that information in your spreadsheet. What went wrong, what went well, what did you forget? Then, the next time someone, or you, wants to do the event again, all you have to do is call up your template, and do what's on the list of tasks. This time, you'll have your notes on what you forgot the first time, who helped you last time, who was good at what task, etc. Every time we start a new project here at Community Cycles, we draw up one of these templates, and start plugging in dates and names and tasks. We use a simple Google spreadsheet, which makes it easy to delegate and share responsibilites, and see waht people are up to. We're getting to the point now where we're able to rely on the spreadhseet info to do the event again, and it's proven SO helpful. When it's time to put the class on again, you just get the plan out of the box, and go down the list. You've taken notes on it already, so you know that if you do everything on the list, then it will be at least as successful and professional as the last time you did it. This isn't specific to bike projects, either. I've imagined it fitting with my old office job for projects or campaigns that we worked on. I think it could even work on personal around-the-house projects if they're sufficiently big enough to warrant their own planning process. I'm working on a "demo model" that has comments explaining some of the inner workings of it. I would love to share it with anyone who's interested. Actually there are 5 - Montreal hosted the first "Velo Velo" conference this past September. Personally I can understand wanting to get together with folks who share your region, climate, state motto, etc. - there are probably a dozen projects in the smaller cities around Toronto we could share ideas with! - but I can also see the drawbacks to having these separate events. There can be a drain on energy and resources (five groups spending several months organizing something on top of their ongoing bike-project work instead of just one group making the sacrifice), as well as the potential to feel competition and folks having to decide which event to attend. We can only get so much time off of work, afterall. Anyhow, maybe we can all keep this in mind to discuss at any and all of these conferences. If you're reading this, you are invited to Boulder to the first ever Mountain States Regional bikebike! It'll be held from March 19th through March 21st, 2010, in Boulder, Colorado. We don't have the registration site set up yet, but when we do, we'll post it. This email is just to let you know it is happening, and to mark your calenders. We're also accepting suggestions for workshops, activities, and any other suggestions you may have. Please know this is not in any way meant to take away from the big Bikebike that's happening in Toronto. We had a bunch of comrades here who couldn't make it to Minneapolis, and we wanted to get together with them. We figured while we're planning this thing, we could invite as many folks as want to come. Anyone is welcome to come to our little version bikebike. No bike shop or organization is to small or large. If you're interested, or have ideas, please let me know. We'll be doing some digging to find some of the smaller projects in the area that either don't know about the international network/movement, or haven't made it to a bikebike yet. Thanks, everyone. Sibley Bike Depot in St. Paul, MN periodically gets donations of police department bikes. They are usually given to us by small suburban communities (St. Paul and Minneapolis auction their bikes off to raise money). Our police dept bikes come with no programmatic strings attached - we can do whatever we want with the bikes. For small or start-up coops, police departments can be reliable sources of bikes. Often they want you to be either a 501c3 or have a sponsoring organization but not always. Especially for small townships, it isn't worth their energy to auction the bikes off - it just doesn't make enough money to be worth it (distinctly different than a place like Toronto or Minneapolis or other medium to big cities). I would warn folks that police department "donations" can be useful but can also be a huge pain in the butt. 2 month ago, we got a load of like 75 bikes of which they were pretty much all worthless and we had to remove the rubber and such to recycle all of them - basically it was a bunch of extra work for us to process abandoned junk. In terms of bike acquisition - I think that doing "bike drives" of various sorts - with churches, businesses, neighborhoods, etc can be a more effective way of acquiring decent bikes for all your different bike coop programs. It also gets the word out to lots of individuals who potentially become supporters of your organization in different ways.
