Phil Bio-Lube and Pedro's ChainJ come to mind, if you've not tried them already. Both are chain lubes. I wouldn't say that either of them are the best chain lube I've ever used, but they do okay and are both biodegradable, if memory serves. Certainly different plant-based oils have very different properties. Flax (linseed) oil for example is known to be a highly polymerizing oil, which is why it's used in paints and the like. Good to season a cast-iron skillet, too, but such properties may be either helpful or harmful for different uses. I'd be curious to see how butter. ghee (clarified butter, doesn't need refrigeration [especially as a lube!] so wouldn't get so funky as butter), or coconut oil might hold up as chain lube...the solid oils don't oxidize and gum up in the same ways that something like olive oil does, and therefore might work better. The move to a larger and dedicated space will allow them to grow their mission, expand open shop hours, and create youth-specific programming in the North Troy neighborhood. The building, dubbed the Wheelhouse, at 3280 6th avenue, was purchased from the city through the recent foreclosure auction from the city of Troy by two TBR collective members and Troy residents who are coordinating the renovation efforts, Andrew Lynn and Ryan Jenkins. The building has been a home to a movie theatre, an electricians workshop, and a vending machine repair shop. We have tried many different solutions for portable parking racks for this service including shipping pallets and baby-crib rails, and are now using bike rims<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091211/83848784…>screwed to three furring strips<http://ocbc.smugmug.com/Other/Earthfest-2007-2007-04-23/0614091210/83848781…>, (the best photos we have are in these links). We're looking for a better solution, as we have several regular yearly events where we need to park up to 300 bikes. As the above-linked photos attest, portability is a primary consideration. Definition - Evidence Based Programs

Hi, Several of you have asked for a definition of "evidenced based programs." Please refer to the link listed below. Also below is part of a response I received from Charles Hammond. Take care. Andy "To answer your first question, I tend toward "research-based" youth programs, which imply the same scientific rigor as "evidence-based" programs, but encompass a wider range of definitions of evidence and scientific methods. Evidence-based usually connotes the attempt to reproduce intervention outcomes to the same truth standards as the physical sciences. I find much quantitative evidence in the social sciences to be questionable because the researcher has neglected to scrutinize his or her own bias sufficiently in creating the experimental design. I would consider some of the work done in bicycle programs in Seattle, Eugene, Indianapolis, and Boston, for example, to be research-based. But if you know of educational bicycle/mentoring programs that consider themselves evidence-based, I would very much like to know about them. The "production school"-type institution I'd like to help create would be strongly research-based, and I'm working on a proposal to a research foundation to create such a venture." Bike Collective Wiki is under attack and we need your help.

Rich Points at Community Cycles (Boulder, CO, USA) has complete control of the bikecollectives.org and bikebike.org domain names and hosting. However, the wiki has been under serious attacks from spammers ( http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&l…), so he needs your help to come up with solutions. Specifically? We need a MediaWiki security solution that still keeps the wiki easy to contribute, but keeps most of the spammers at bay and doesn't burn out the moderators. I just called Orontas and they'll be distributing their bicycle lubes, greases & degreasers through babac cyles distributors(Montreal) in the very near future. They just sent babac their first batch for distro 2 weeks ago so it should appear in the new babac catalogue & online very soon. It will be available in 20 L (5 gal) format so no need to bother with them pesky eco-aerosol cans and I reckon it'll be hella cheaper in bulk. I'd assume that they are available through other distributors as well, I just happen to use babac so that's all I asked about. Bike Trailer & teaching skills workshops

Hey folks Geoff from Bike Dump & The WRENCH up here in Winnipeg. We're organizing a summer workshop series and 2 of the requested topics are trailers and teaching skills for in the shop. So I was wondering if anyone had done workshops on these topics and could share their materials/experience. Is it even really feasible to do a trailer workshop in one day given that most designs involve substantial cutting, welding, etc? Also, does anyone have notes from the "HOW TO TEACH HANDS OFF" Workshop at last year's Bikebike? it ain't up on the wiki sadly. Thanks! Geoff

One of the things that came out of the Bici Bici conference here in California this past weekend was a potential bike tour of California. In order to start thinking about the tour, we needed to build a map. So we turned to Google Maps. And quickly realized that there's a need for a comprehensive bike collectives (et cetera) map. So we have changed the name of the map to include you. Yep, YOU! WOO! Winter has kept us busy and we've made some great improvements around the shop. There have been some recent improvements in Reno's riding conditions, with the addition of two new major bike lanes. Arlington received striping from First Street south to Skyline Avenue, and Holcomb was striped from Mill Street South to Mt Rose St. Thank the City Council and the RTC Bike and Pedestrian Committee for helping to make Reno A safer city for cyclist. We have some exciting events coming up to get everyone excited about riding. April 2 is our 5th annual We HeArt Bikes Art Show. If you have never been I can't say enough about this event. Since its inception this event has continually amazed us at the number of artist who ride a bicycle. Last year we had submissions from over 50 artists and we expect that number to increase this year. The other event we want you to think about is our 2nd annual Bike Day, May 21. Bike Day is our annual Community get together and Bike Swap. We invite bike organizations from all over to come and meet with the public to get their message out there. It is also our annual bike swap, come sell your bike on consignment or get a table and sell your own wares. BIKE-a-THON

We've had 7 'stages' of the Tour de Montana over last 5 years. It is a fun, great way to raise money. The tops was 36 riders raising $2,000 on a long one day ride (132 miles). The funest was 2 day overnight, self supported, 60 miles each way, carrying kids bikes on bike trailers to deliver to schools along the way. We pick a route, theme, make it an adventure, spread the word. We used motor vehicle support for the first two, now it's all by bike. Head Mechanic Wanted for East Village Location in NYC Full time position available! We are a not-for-profit bicycle shop that refurbishes bicycles to sell and offers full-service repairs. We have a youth job training and environmental education program that works with teenagers to teach them bicycle mechanics, job skills, and environmental stewardship. Free Cycles Missoula: Open shop: 2-6pm m-th, 11-3 sat. (same for ped tech warehouse next door) Vol night: 6-8pm wed. Bikewell classes: tu 7pm, we 5pm, th 1pm I think it is good to have open shop hours people can remember easily, like Max lists below. It's like a bus system: good public transport has enough hours and coverage so you do not have to study the route maps and times, you just go/know. We are looking for any bike co-ops that have tax-exempt status as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. Basically, we have run into a question as to whether and to what extent we may make retail sales of bikes, bike parts and accessories as part of our regular operations without (i) paying income tax (as unrelated business taxable income) and (ii) otherwise affecting our tax-exempt status. Does your co-op sell bikes, bike parts and/or accessories directly to the public without those sales being part of your educational program? In addition, are there any co-ops out there who are associated or operated in tandem with a for-profit business. This would be structured so that the for-profit business supports the not-for-profit entity. Finally, we are assuming that most co-ops with tax-exempt status received their charitable status for education purposes. Hey everyone, A part-time position has been created at Free Ride in Pittsburgh and we are searching to hire somebody to fill the role. The position will take care of administrative tasks related to the youth summer programs, allowing instructors to focus on teaching and strengthening our ability to work with outside groups. Attention all West Coasters and whoever wants to visit the fair town of Davis, California! The Davis Bike Collective will be hosting BiciBici, a regional version of Bike!Bike! Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3! In Davis, California, famous for making the first bike lanes in the U.S. and for being a super bike-friendly town. We have lots of fun stuff planned, including workshops, delicious meals, bike dashes, good music, and bike fixin. injuries in shop
