We also changed our model from having one shop manager to creating multiple job positions with defined descriptions. We have two paid mechanics and a volunteer coordinator and a youth coordinator. We also have set up teams with different responsibilities that can be shared with volunteers. This also leads the way to having a more community run organization. We are still working on it, but our new model is proving more successful in eliminating bottlenecks, staff overload and getting more volunteers involved. Hey Everyone, I hope the slow traffic on the list of late is a factor of everyone getting some good back-end planning time. In the past few years, we've collected a decent stack of bicycle repair and other type of bike books (things like Lance Armstrong's book, or local mountain bike trail guidebooks, etc). We'd like to do something productive with these, and it occurred to me that we could lend them out to members. Does anyone else have something similar? The thread on housing storage reminded me of a shop I visited in Montreal called SOS Velo. Not so much in terms of parts storage but in creative ways of using bike parts. When re-Cycles was entering its partnership with Cycle Salvation the visit was made so that both orgs. could see a large-scale bicycle recycling centre in operation. This shop is a fully-funded place that not only recycles bikes but also provides "a unique program that ensures the social and professional integration of people who have trouble finding and keeping jobs". This places recycles everything! If it can no longer be used on a bike it gets turned into bike art, and some of it is very cool indeed. Hey Everyone. Hope those of you getting the snow are staying dry and warm... Community Cycles in Boulder has just wrapped up phase one of a huge remodel. We tore out some walls, are putting in a nice retail front end showroom, and things are really coming together. We had tons of help from volunteers, and Chris from the Park Hill Bike Depot in Denver came up and moved some electrical work for us. Amazing. Anyway, here's a pretty cool photo of one of the upgrades. The Community Partners Bike Library will provide bicycles, fully equipped for transportation purposes, for 6-month loan to low-income community members. The Bike Library will additionally provide under-served communities with classes in safe cycling, bike maintenance, and commuting, and support in acquiring a bicycle for long-term use at the termination of the loan period. Quad Bikes is Hiring a New Manager! Founded in 2003, Quad Bikes has provided repairs and quality refurbished and new bicycles to the Harvard University community ever since. We are presently looking for an operations manager to handle the administrative side of the shop. Enthusiasm for cycling is a must, but experience repairing bicycles is an asset, not a necessity. Training in bicycle repair will be available. Candidates will benefit from past work in a non-profit environment and being organized, efficient and reliable. Familiarity with Quickbooks and non-profit incorporation and law will also be major assets. The job will entail considerable interaction with customers so a friendly and approachable attitude is a must. The position will entail meeting with a number of on-campus offices on a regular basis, such as Commuter Choice, Harvard Recycling and the Harvard Police. Quad Bikes is responsible for the tagging and removal of abandoned bikes left on campus. The job will entail organizing this program with The Harvard administration. Quad Bikes refurbishes many of these bikes to be sold. The position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience running a non-profit bike shop, while working with a group of young people passionate about biking. We are looking for an individual with a strong sense of customer service, good organizational skills and supervisory experience to manage everything from day-to-day operations to long-term planning. Specific areas of responsibility will be: managing a small team of young people, maintaining the shop website and mailing list, ordering parts and supplies, paying taxes and bills, and maintaining payroll and finances. Gah. Hit the wrong key and my incomplete message went out... South America and Asia are definitely under represented. Does anyone know of or have contacts in these areas? I remember someone at San Francisco having done some kind of bike work in Nepal, I believe. Also, if you haven't checked it out yet, please do. It's a tremendous help for those organizing and communicating with groups for things like regional bikebikes and the international BikeBikes. There have been a lot of additions since many of you checked in and updated your listing. There's more columns, including mission statement, and one I just added, the process for your volunteers. Also, some of you may not have noticed the second page. It's a chart that allows people to post a question or issue they're facing in the first row, and then others can address it. So far us and Salt Lake City are the only groups to have posted there. I have high hopes for that page. If you don't have access to the spreadsheet, or want to check it out, please let me know. Hey, I had drafted an email about travel plans, but decided to put off sending it until closer to the date. Here is some pertinent information: Flying to Buffalo and then taking another form of transit to Toronto will be the best and cheapest way, if you have to take a plane. This is what we did to get to San Fransisco last year! There are potentially VERY cheap megabus (http://www.megabus.com/us/) and greyhound (www.greyhound.com) busses. the earlier you book the cheaper it will be. these will take you right into the city. Some Greyhound routes are express (Toronto to NY) and can be as cheap as $2 each way if you find a deal. you can also take the train, but bare in mind you may have to switch trains when it goes from amtrak to viarail (http://www.viarail.ca/en) crossing the border. Driving is about 90 minutes from Buffalo to Toronto and taking the bus it is 2-3hours, factoring in the border crossing. If you do fly into toronto, Pearson International Airport is the largest one and serves all major airlines. It is accessible by transit (a bus takes you directly to the end of the subway line which then takes you into the city), or if you want you could put your bike together and bike in from there - though you have to cross some highway, so it may not be for the faint of heart. We can get the best recommended cycling route for anyone interested in doing that. Toronto Island Airport is right in the harbour on Lake Ontario. They are only serviced by Porter Airlines (http://www.flyporter.com), who fly to a few major cities including Boston, Chicago and New York. They sometimes have competitive rates, and are very accessible to the core of the city. Hope that helps. The Toronto team has finalized the dates for Bike!Bike! 2010: Thursday August 12 - Sunday August 15 (This includes a Friday the 13th so be prepared for a cursed event that night!) As I mentioned before we are very lucky to have a volunteer who is getting a university course credit for her work on Bike!Bike! 2010. And she needs work to do as of NOW! Our goal is this: To set her up collecting data, info, numbers, stories, photos, and histories from the past organizers (and participants) of Bike!Bike! We would like to get in contact with any folks who were involved in the planning and facilitation of the conference. If you, or someone you know was involved please send us a contact (email and phone # if possible) and she will begin to get in touch with people. email kelly at happilyuseful(a)gmail.com She has been given a list of particular issues we would like to address (logistics, statistics) and will contact you with a bunch of questions. But there is no way we have thought of everything! If you have other info to share please send it along to her. We would also like to gather, in one place, all the physical mementos like invites, posters and city-maps that each city has produced. We have the last 3-years' posters and programs in our archive, but if you want to send us anything digital that would be even better. In the end we hope to have 2 things: an online archive and resource, like we've discussed here, that has useful info for those planning future conferences. not just stats but timelines/guidelines/budgets to compare. and a zine with Bike!Bike! info and history and pictures that we can distribute at this year's conference. This has probably been discussed before, and it's probably on some bike collectives website... what is your bike shop's take on the issue of liability? like, if someone gets injured, either working in your shop, or possibly somehow because of a bike they have made or bought there. Dealing with intoxicated users

Hey Folks, Quick question: How do you deal tactfully/respectfully with users of your space who are visibly intoxicated or smell strongly of booze? It's our policy to not allow people to work in this state (for personal safety, amount of oversight required, and comfort levels for other users of the space). This policy, however, is never really enacted. I suppose we don't (I don't!) feel comfortable asking people when I suspect their intoxication may lead them to react abrasively. Any specific lines or strategies you use? free online donation/purchase processing

Hi all, I remember some groups talking at bike!bike! about a free service they used to take in money online. Right now, we use google checkout, and we lose a portion of our donations this way. What free services to folks have that don't take a percentage of the donation? Also, are their any good systems for setting up an automatic payment for classes? For example, sometimes people who sign up for our paid eight-week classes don't end up showing up and giving us a check on the first day, and then we're either under-filled or scrambling to make up the student. I would like to get their inquiry emails, answer their questions, and in my replies, include a link to a secure site (not open to the public, so we can monitor class enrollment) where the soon-to-be student pays the class fee upfront, when they sign up. Then the option to back out will be gone, and people won't reserve seats they don't actually end up using or paying for. It might be okay to have a "store" for classes, alternately, as long as we can only "sell" a certain number at each time. However, I like the secret page idea because then we can keep an eye on if four buddies sign up for the same class or it's six men, no women, etc. and control enrollment (as well as directing people towards classes we now will fill on-time). Bike Magazines at the Dentist

Bike Enthusiasts, About a year ago I was sitting in the waiting room of my dentist sifting through the array of magazines they have, you know the type; Mademoiselle, Good Housekeeping, Time, People... I thought it'd be a good idea to get bikes in the mix of info and gave a subscription of Bike and Bicycle magazines. This cost me $30 for the two one year subscriptions. I just renewed the Bike subscription for two years for $20. It's a small gift that helps get bicycles on the minds of more people. Next time you're in a waiting room have a look at the magazine offerings and consider adding bikes to the mix. But half the population is female, and both men and women need to hear what important roles women have played and are playing now in bike advocacy (and everything else . . . ). Wouldn't you agree? There are tons of rad women in the L.A. bike scene -- why can't you have some of them on your programs?? And what Jim meant to say in reply was, Andrea-- Shoot, you are so right!!! Duh!!! Do you have any contacts I can use? Would you like to be on the show and discuss women and bicycling? I would love to interview you on the show! To which Andrea meant to say, Jim-- Yeah sure, I could be on your show, but I think you should use local talent, don't you? If you don't know any women bike advocates in L.A., well then dude you aren't paying enough attention! patriarchy

it seems to me many men here are missing the point. have people here encountered the concept of tokenism before? of the history and contemporary use of the concept of "hysterics"? or of even of patriarchy itself (as opposed to plain sexism)? have people read any of the ideas of feminists about how patriarchy functions? if not, this might be a really good time to familiarize yourself. bell hooks, who was mentioned before, is one of a plethora of possibilities, and is a good starting point. in general when dealing with oppression, it's tempting for members of the dominant group (in this case, males) to want to invent the idea of the "other" "bad males" as the problem, so they can feel pure and good in themselves, and to look only at explicit individual sexist acts, ignoring how deeply patriarchy is woven into the fabric of our society. for the same reasons, when confronted with patriarchy in the bike shop, many men will turn the question into "how can we convince more women to work here with us" instead of "how can we change our own behaviour to be less patriarchal." i hope the distinction is clear. we don't need any more men wasting our time trying to convince us that we've got them all wrong and that they couldn't possibly be sexist because some of their best friends are women. we need more men to actually spend time working against their own patriarchy, as well as society's. when we start looking closer at our own assumptions about what are "neutral" or "rational" ways of acting, we can uncover some surprising insights into how patriarchy works. one great example might be, say, an admonition that everyone should only ever have a "calm and positive" tone, or that we need to "deep six" dissenters to "restore order, production and prosperity." anyway, i'm sure none of us have too much hope in this email process, so please read up and start putting feminist ideas into practice in your own lives. macho http://bike-dump.ca

Hey all, Really I just want to see the subject change, so I'd like to see folks throw out some ideas of wishes, dreams, plans and schemes they are hoping for in the new year. We at Pirates have a few - it always seems hard to implement drastic changes, so the new year seems a good excuse. Here's some things on our list: Changing our locks. there have been a number of key-holders who have come and gone, and we never changed the locks when we first moved into our building. Better security and a better system of designating key-holders is a top priority. Tracking sales. right now all of our cash just goes into the donation box, and not all new parts are *necessarily* paid for in full. We need to ensure we charge for all new items as well as (gulp) starting to charge all applicable taxes and track these sales! Do our taxes for the first time!!! Volunteer training. Right now we just have an orientation to introduce people to the space. We would like to have some basic training, including some anti-o/sensitivity and some way of designating who is a volunteer and who is a participant in the space. Any suggestions or input on the best way to implement any of these changes would be most appreciated. What are your goals for the new year? Ainsley and The Pirates.
