In my workshop we have one pretty cool way of storing little, easy to lose parts like bolts, nuts, and washers. We have a board which is mounted to the wall length-wise and is protruding out from the wall at about a 45 degree angle (The top of the board is connected to the wall about 6 inches away from the wall itself). We have twist on jar lids screwed to this board with the jars full of the little bits screwed in. When we need something you just unscrew the jar, get the part and when you're done you find the matching lid to the jar and screw it back in. Ghost bikes and collective action

Hi everyone, I'm writing with sad news from Mexico City. A cyclist was killed two days ago by a drunk police officer who hit him and another cyclist who is still alive but in critical condition in the hospital. It happened in downtown around a very busy area and workers from the mercados nearby caught the police officer who tried to run away after the crash, but immediately, more than a 100 riot cops arrived to save the cop and to arrest people who were trying to make justice on their own hands. An ambulance never showed up. Today the chief of the police department announced that the cop who was driving was negative on the alcohol test, so she is only going to get fired but will face no other charges. We are so sad, angry and feel powerless about not being able to do much. Today we are going to have a ride at night in memory of the dead cyclist and on saturday we will install a ghost bike for him. I'd like to hear what you all have done in these cases, what else besides ghost bikes and rides have you done when you have faced such terrible situations like this one? Any ideas? Have you documented any action you have done? Also, I know legal procedures may be so different but, have any of you used any legal tool in these situations? Thanks so much. Best, Jim -- *Jimena D. bicycle-based libraries?

i've got a friend who's part of a group that is interested in starting a bicycle based library in the Los Angeles area. They're still working out most of the details, but basically imagine a cargo bike or trailer with a bunch of books that rides around and parks and has books available for checkout/free Is anyone involved in something like this? Or know of projects like this? I know I saw a video of one a long time ago but can't recall where. The bike/library in that video had a taller wooden box with swing-open doors and was primarily a homeless outreach program at the beginning. I would love some links if you know of any. Would also love to put my friend in touch with someone who's done it before to chat about the process of getting it set up, equipment, costs, etc. The person I know who's involved is a recent (past two years or so) convert to the awesomeness of bikes, so a lot of nuts and bolts (literally and figuratively) of this thing can likely use some experienced guidance. I scored some nice industrial shelving hand-me-downs, but I need smaller storage containers (boxes, crates, etc) to store parts in. I don't particularly want to use plastic, as I've found most of it breaks. Does anyone have any good solutions for sturdy, stackable storage? Hi All! Interbike's way, way around the corner, September 10th-12th with the Outdoor Demo the two days before. As you probably know, the industry's dog-and-pony show is a great environment for Collectives to meet retailers and shop owners and let them know about all the great ways to get involved with what we do on a local and national level. Last year we didn't get a ticket confirmation until the LAST MINUTE, which was annoying, so I wanted to reach out to the network early this year with two things. 1. Would you like to go and get a (free) ticket through us? 2. what resources should we bring to bear and share with the cycling industry? *1. If you'd like to go, sign up on this sheet and fill out the relevant tabs. *So if you're needing a hotel room, put yourself down in one of the slots, we aim to put 4-6 people in each room to keep 'em cheap. If you're looking to carpool, put down your arrival/departure details and room in your vehicle, if applicable. Going to Interbike with us comes with responsibility: Firstly, everyone attending has to sign up for two shifts at the Bicycle Collective Network booth (third tab below), where we'll be representing the Bicycle Collective and the Alliance for Walking and Biking. Secondly, we will not tolerate conduct that doesn't represent us favorably to the rest of the bicycling industry. Being inconsiderate of an exhibitor's time, heckling for swag or deals from people you haven't developed a relationship with or who haven't clearly offered that sort of thing, or generally behaving like a child will earn you a boot from the show. I volunteer with the community bike project in Bloomington, IN. If the bikes need a ride to a new home and if the moving truck costs are covered, I'd be willing to figure out how to schedule time to travel up to St. Paul and drive them to a place like the one mentioned in Chicago. Hello, The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign has the same issue every year. We partner with Working Bikes out of Chicago. They collect bikes and package them in shipping containers for shipment to places that have programs setup to repair and distribute the bikes in South America and I think Africa as well. This April they actually came to us with a shipping container and helped us send 420 bikes to Le Salvador directly from our warehouse. You would have to ask, but I think they would be willing to pick the bikes up. Impact of Co-ops on Commercial Bike Shops

I'm in the process of starting a bike co-op in the Rockville, MD area. Once we are established, I want to go and talk to the managers of the commercial bike shops in the area. Since I can foresee some potential antagonism based on the perception that the co-op will compete with them for repair business, I want to go armed with information. Does anyone know of any studies that show the economic impact of bike co-ops on the commercial shops in the same area? Along the same lines, does anyone have personal experience on the reaction of commercial shops to the start up of a co-op in "their" area? The more specific you can be in the responses, the better, though I can understand if you don't want to throw someone under the bus. Any information would be helpful. We're still a few months away from actually needing this information, but I'd like to be prepared. Virtual Bike tool sharing library

This distribution list is fantastic. I'm new to bicycle cooperatives but I'm enthusiastic to continue learning more so I'm thrilled to have a resource like this. I'm vacationing in Manatee, FL. My girlfriends family asked for my help fixing all of their bikes and I don't have my tools and the closest bike coop is in St. Petersburg, so it got me wondering if anyone's considered a virtual tool sharing library for bicycle tools. It could be a great resource for towns which a brick & mortar bicycle coop isn't yet self sustainable. If I lived in a small town, I'd for sure host one. Perhaps it could be a mobile application? Gearin’ Up Bicycles provides access to quality used bicycles in Washington D.C. through used bicycle sales and youth outreach programs. We sell refurbished donated used bicycles and provide employment opportunities for young adults in underserved communities. In addition, Gearin' Up Bicycles partners with local youth organizations to provide Earn-A-Bike programs. Gearin’ Up is growing in all ways -- the number of projects we're working on, volunteer opportunities, and more. The Board Selection Committee of the Gearin’ Up Bicycles is currently seeking applications from prospective Board Members who are passionate about providing greater access to bicycles while providing opportunities to Washington D.C. As a Board Member you will be responsible for three areas: 1. Governance (strategy, planning, fiduciary responsibilities) 2. Involvement in programs/committees that raise awareness and support for Gearin’ Up. 3. Development (raising funds, community awareness and recruiting quality volunteers) Minimum Requirements: * proven experience as a volunteer and fundraiser * interest and ability to be an ambassador for the Gearin’ Up * a commitment to the Gearin’ Up, including time and flexibility to help grow the Gearin’ Up * a board donation and/or a fundraising commitment * practical skills/experience in at least one of the following areas: finance and accounting, non-profit law, PR, marketing, creative/design, project management, business management, urban planning, government, transportation or policy * attendance at monthly Board meetings, Gearin’ Up special events and committee/project meetings Time Commitment: Board meetings are usually one hour every month or every other month. Initial meetings will be held at a central location, and subsequent meetings will be held by telephone. We ask for an additional 2-5 hours/month to work on specific tasks or projects. We ask Board Members to serve for at least 1 year with a strong preference for 2 years of service. Liability Waiver?

Hello folks across the pond! Recently, our friends at the London Bike Kitchen had their first conflict with a customer. He came into the workshop with a fancy Cannondale CAAD10 with a press fit BB20 bottom bracket, and he verbally agreed to their Terms & Conditions. However, the student turned out to be quite difficult - not listening to instructions, questioning instructions, consulting the internet, etc. During the BB installation process, the instructor forgot to put in the shims before the bearings were pressed in, so they had to get knocked out. Somewhere along the line, the inside of the BB shell was damaged, and there is disagreement between the instructor and the student about what happened/whose fault it is, etc. Now the student is asking for £800 to replace his frame, which could be deadly for a small bike shop. Following this, we’re having a lot of discussion in the UK bike community about how to approach these difficult situations. Has anyone dealt with a problem like this before? Does anyone have an effective liability waiver that covers both the customer and the shop? City Bike Plans: Do Collectives Connect Community Voices to Planning?

Dear all, Some Alta Planning + Design consultants who are assisting the City of Columbus, OH on their bike plan update asked me for advice about their communication campaign, such as best practices for outreach. I brought up bike co-ops and told them about Bike! Bike! being held in Columbus this year. I'm wondering what role collectives organizers/volunteers can play or have played as connectors, getting community voices heard that wouldn't otherwise make it to the city level. Or do bike plans seem totally disconnected from co-op concerns? If there's interest in having some kind of community conversation about what role co-ops can play in connecting more people to bike planning, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the Alta folks. A velodrome is typically made of wood and has ramped corners to accommodate a racer’s high speed in sharp turns; they may be built as outdoor or indoor tracks. According to USA Cycling there are:29 velodromes in 22 states 29 cities with velodromes19,355 cities in the USA Detroit is one of the 19,326 cities WITHOUT a velodrome.Detroit is FORTUNATE because there is one velodrome - only 25 miles outside of the city Rochester Hills, MI. Because of the invisibility of the sport, BikeVON and the International Velodrome of Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan provided a motivator of a stipend for the children. They will receive $270 for 6 weeks of training to “ride” a bike. Training is 3 days a week for 2 hours. All equipment and coaching is free. Since this is a little known spot, Wayne State University’s Kinesiology Department will conduct yearlong study on the sport. This is the information needed to apply for funding. Please before you suggested to ask for any services, I have asked, community organizations, major non-profits for kids in the health, wellness and fitness no one is giving for these assorted reasons: *remember the track in this area is 1 out of 29 in the USA. and no it is not portable* 1. Community organizations will only grant money if the program is within their community. 2. Major grantors want the program within the city limits.3. Major grantors want the $$$ IRS and audit records. 4. What can I provide in advertising coverage?5. Church organizations did not want to donated $$$ to support the stipend or bus use because the church did not want to be liable. Online I raised $2,500 out of pocket expenses are over that. From printing materials, paying people, travel expenses, web development etc. I am leaking money. I gave a fund raiser is March and did not make ANY money. My target audience is kids 13 - 18 years old. I have been in contact with Boys and Girls clubs, community and youth organizations, schools, churches, youth build a bike programs and bike shops. In March, I went to a youth meeting an 26 kids signed up. I took just name and email address. Going in, I knew transportation was going to be any issue. School bus rental quotes were anywhere from $148 - $250 per trip and there are 18 trips in the program. For me to rent a van then there are bonding issues. When the contribution $$$ topped off, I was asking the parents to car pool and I would supply gas $$$. I started with 10 kids. By the March fund raiser there were 7 and by the first weekend in May two kids. During May we have try-outs we offered to give each child $10 to come for try-outs. If 3 kids from the same organization came they would receive $13. Parent / guardian had to come to sign liability waivers. For the first weekend on one came. Graduations and other things going on. For the second weekend 4 students signed up at one school and I was counting on another to contact me. The transportation company needs at least 10 days notice. These wonderful people were working on a 3 day turn around for me. I rented a school bus. On that Saturday no one came. The reason were busy schedules and parents could not come with the child. With the holiday weekend approaching, I did not even think about organization anything. I am emailing and knocking on doors with a start date of June 7th. Questions:1. I need a fund raiser to replenish my funds. If I have to pay for transportation, I cannot use the money for kids' stipend. My savings are dwindling. 2. How to motivate the kids.3. Advertising.
